Ward 1 residents face water woes

Jalandhar, June 9
For the residents of Maqsudan bypass the day begins with the hunt for water. From the elderly to the womenfolk to the children, everybody either waits for water or reaches out to the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation (MC) water tank parked outside the colony.

This has been the scene for the past around a month. Reason: The tubewell connection situated at Dadamal area has been out of order. At times the residents manage to get little water through another tubewell connection situated at Anand Nagar.

The sudden technical snag in the tubewell connection has left the residents of Maqsudan bypass, Mahasha colony, Ravidass Nagar, Angad Nagar, Surat Nagar, Amandeep Avenue, Master colony and New Ravidass Nagar virtually helpless.

Such is the scene that in this scorching heat the residents are forced to run the household chores with a maximum of five buckets of water throughout the day. “It has been more than a month since we are facing water shortage in this peak summers. Right from cooking food to washing clothes, bathing and running the mundane household works everything has become difficult. We spend our day saving water for household works,” said a shopkeeper from Maqsudan bypass locality.

Another resident, Happy whose house entrance was flooded with line of six buckets said, “Every morning the first thing we do is reach outside the locality to fetch water from the tubewell of Conservator of Forests which is situated on the Jalandhar-Maqsudan road or from the MC water tank.”

“We face a tough time during rains due to water logging. While many other colonies are well connected with roads but our condition has been the same for the past many years,” said a resident of Maqsudan bypass.

Independent councillor from Ward 1, Paramjit Kaur Jassal, said the tubewell situated in Dadamal area went out of order a month back. “We have spent Rs 12.65 lakh for restoring the water connection. The work is going on in full swing and hopefully the water shortage problem would be over within three to four days,” she said, adding that even we are also putting up in this colony and facing water shortage.

Further talking about various development works in her ward, she said sewerage project worth Rs 5 crore was laid at six colonies namely Ravidass Nagar, Anand Nagar, Janta Colony, Nav Nirman Nagar, Guru Nanak Nagar and Isa Nagar. “While another sewerage project worth Rs 13.70 crore will be started at Indra Colony within four months,” she added.

It is pertinent to mention here that earlier her husband Des Raj Jassal was the councillor from this reserved ward as an independent candidate. Later this ward was declared reserved for women and his wife Paramjit Kaur Jassal won again.

Surprisingly, the councillor claimed that all the colonies falling under her ward had fine road connectivity but a majority of the lanes in her own colony were not cemented.

Ward 1 includes: Ashok Vihar, Indira Colony, Baba Mohan Das Nagar, Sarabha Nagar, Bank colony, Verka Milk Plant, Gurbaksh Nagar, Maqsudan Bypass, Mohara Colony, Surat Nagar, Master Colony, Amandeep Avenue, Ravidass Nagar, New Ravidass Nagar, Angad Nagar, Anand Nagar, New Anand Nagar, Janta Colony, Nav Nirman Janta Colony, Guru Nanak Nagar, Isa Nagar, Aara Mohalla, Chak Zinda Pind, Salimpur Musalmana, Sant Vihar and Navjot Colony.

Ramdev’s struggle: City residents pour out feelings
Aparna Banerji
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, June 9
The drama that has unfolded after Baba Ramdev’s fateful decision to undertake a fast and satyagrah to fight corruption has kept the entire nation glued to the TV sets and given the media fodder to last for months.

From Baba Ramdev’s red-carpet welcome at the Delhi airport and heightened patriotism at the Ramlila Grounds (and the eventual crackdown) to Sushma Swaraj’s “courtesy call” to a seemingly unwell Baba at Patanjali Yog Peeth in Haridwar (not to forget Baba’s call for an armed resistance, if need be), the Baba’s reputation has certainly come under a cloud for many reasons and his movement has suffered.

The Anna camp, too, except for condemning police action observes a measured silence on the Baba even as it announces support for them.

Though the city has no lack of faith in Baba Ramdev’s abilities as a yoga guru, most people have had a change in perspective after the recent incidents.

While some still give him the benefit of doubt, others think Baba’s movement is constantly taking political colour and sidetracking from the core issue of fighting corruption. Here’s what some say:

Rajesh Gupta, MD, Fairdeal Group of Companies: Neither the acts of the government, nor the Baba are 100 per cent justified. The action on the night of June 4 showed how scared and insecure the government is. As far as Baba is concerned, in India, the government doesn’t listen to you if there is no nuisance value.

But Baba Ramdev’s call for an armed resistance is proof that he is scared too and since the government is planning to initiate legal actions against him regarding inadequacies, he is making strong statements to scare them.

Atima Sharma, Principal, Kanya Maha Vidyalaya(KMV)Atima Sharma, Principal, Kanya Maha Vidyalaya(KMV): The way the police scooped down on innocents is morally incorrect. It was uncalled for. It uprooted and discouraged a good cause.

I did have a lot of faith in Baba Ramdev as a yoga guru but what he said yesterday was scary. What’s the difference between him and the government then? Training people militarily would not work out. The entire thing is getting way too political. Violent statements would only ensure that the real issue of tackling corruption gets sidelined.

Anna Hazare’s struggle, however, is peaceful and he sticks to the cause.

Ramnita Sharda, lecturer, Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya (HMV)Ramnita Sharda, lecturer, Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya (HMV): The motivation for the Baba did not seem to come from within. It is from Anna’s movement. Baba Ramdev is definitely speaking the language of the RSS. Though the attack from the government was unjustified, Ramdev’s behaviour after that has been devoid of any dignity. If he had some inkling he was going to be attacked (like he said), he should have forewarned the people rather than running away.

The BJP, which is backing him, is itself not serious. Can someone dance in the middle of the night if they are worried about people getting injured or rights being violated?

With yesterday’s statement he has just shown his real colours. It’s just a lot of drama and no substance. Anna’s movement, however, is not political, nor does his camp create a ruckus. Anna’s movement makes a lot more sense.

Deepak Bali, secretary, Punjab Jagriti ManchDeepak Bali, secretary, Punjab Jagriti Manch: Baba Ramdev’s cause and the way he chose to propagate seemed right. It is time to ask people to set out from their homes and take up a good cause. If we keep sitting at home, matters won’t be helped.

The government’s crackdown, however, wasn’t justified. That is no way to treat innocents. But both BJP’s excessive support and Baba’s violent statements have made his struggle suffer. That makes the scenario communal. A person of his stature shouldn’t have issued such statements.

Siddharth Sharma, Zonal Manager of an insurance companySiddharth Sharma, Zonal Manager of an insurance company: The fault lies with the system and a Lokpal Bill or a Baba sitting on a fast won’t change anything. There need to be changes in the way things work officially, at the government level.

Ramdev has been deceiving people all through and with every statement he issues, it gets clearer.

A vocational training programme (VTP) being held at Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya (HMV) has come as a boon for the many underprivileged students attending it. Girls from financially weaker sections have been receiving lessons in garment making, stitching, beauty, soft skills and personality grooming for the past one week under the programme, an effort by the Skill Development Initiative of the Ministry of Labour.

The total time for the completion of lessons, which started a week ago, will be three months.

Course coordinator Neeti Sood (assistant professor in home science), Shalu Dua (lecturer in fashion designing) and Mukti (lecturer in cosmetology), who have been giving lessons in garment design and cosmetology to the students, say teaching these students has been a heart warming experience.

Principal Rekha Bhardwaj says, “Our teachers personally visited the Pingla Ghar, Nariniketan and Apahaj Ashram, meetings of class IV employees were held and publicity campaigns were carried out to select and spread awareness among the students and now we have 70 students attending them.”

Lecturer Shalu Dua says students from various age groups (courses are meant for girls aged 14 or above) have been attending the classes. “There are girls who have not studied beyond Class V. There are others aged 50 and 60 years. Their zeal is unmatched because they understand the value of the knowledge they are getting.”

“There is nominal fee (Rs 1,125 and Rs 750 for stitching and beauty skill courses, respectively) which the students pay now. It will be refunded once the results are out,” Shalu adds.

Talking about the classes, Gayaki Sharma, a resident of Kartarpur, and a student of the garment-making course, says the lessons have been really helpful in ensuring a better future for her.

“After my plus one, I had been looking for a good course in garment design. The prices are very reasonable and we will also get a refund. This will really help me fulfil my dreams,” says Gayaki, who dreams of opening her own boutique someday.

Sukhpreet, another student of garment-making course, says, “The course has really been a boon for us. Its scope is really good and will help me a lot.”

A garment-making competition was also held for the students of the course at the college on Thursday.

Promotion Woes
Master cadre in Education Dept to launch mass protests
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, June 9
Agitated over the dilly-dallying tactics of the Education Department in providing promotions to the master cadre as lecturers in the state government schools, the members of Lecturer Tarraki Mission Front, Punjab, on Thursday said that they would launch a mass protest in this regard.

Addressing a press conference, convener of the front, Sukhdev Singh said it has been more than 10 years since the master cadre is running from pillar to post seeking promotions from the department.

He said the Education Minister should give us appointment to discuss the matter before June 15 else they would be forced to stage mass dharnas across the state.

“Last month the Education Department appointed 513 lecturers for the NABARD-run schools much to the annoyance of the master cadre. While we kept on waiting for promotions the government ignored us and went ahead with new recruitments,” he added.

The Education Department recruited 25 per cent of lecturers through fresh recruitments of NABARD-run schools while the 75 per cent lecturers to be appointed on the basis of promotions were left in the lurch.

He added that last year the Education Department had assured us of promotions and sought our files for the same but nothing has materialised till date.

“Unfortunately, the Education Department lost our files which we had sent for promotion last year. Many lecturers retired awaiting promotions and others are on the verge of retirement but the Education Department is yet to address our genuine demand,” he said.
