Shaken by two back-to-back suicides of students, the education department has swooped into action and is seeking fact-finding reports behind the two incidents.

Financial stress, rising prices the trigger
Ludhiana, June 5
The flurry of suicides in the past three days, all of them triggered by financial troubles, has sent alarm bells ringing in the city. A 29-year-old woman, Nisha, set herself on fire in her sister's house in the Jodhewal Basti locality on June 3. A day later the body of a debt-ridden employee of a chemist shop, Amit Kumar, 28, who had been reported missing since May 31, was found from Sidhwan Canal near Beeja village.

10 injured as minibus hits median, overturns
Ludhiana, June 5
Ten passengers were injured when a mini bus overturned after the driver, who was reportedly under the influence, lost control of the wheel near the city’s Jodhewal Chowk on Sunday afternoon. The minibus was headed for Samrala Chowk from Jodhewal Basti.

Sukhdarshan Singh Saini, a student of BCM School, Basant Avenue, has achieved the 290th all-India rank in the AIEEE, the results of which were posted today.

Hundreds of students who could not score well in AIEEE, the results of which were declared today, feel that their energy-levels had come down due to paper-leak on May 1. The students said that they felt disgusted, as they were not given another chance by CBSE to prove their worth.

High drama was witnessed when a cop in an inebriated state created ruckus for more than an hour and a half at Jeevan Nagar locality of Kacha Malak Road here late last night. The tippler cop also showered abuses on nearby residents when they locked him inside a house where he had come to meet a woman.

Earthen pots, grains distributed for birds
The Bharat Vikas Parishad (Tagore Branch) distributed earthen pots and foodgrains under "feed a bird" programme in a bid to provide water and food to the birds.

Vikram Hazare an international singer, Art of Living, enthralled audience here at Guru Nanak Dev Bhawan by reciting bhajans. He was performing in a musical evening “Dil se” organised by Art of Living a Non Government Organisation. He recited bhajana of Lord Krishna, Lord Shiva etc and kept the audience glued to the seats.

GN model school gets CBSE affiliation
Doraha, Sahnewal: Guru Nanak Model Senior Secondary School, Doraha, has been granted the affiliation of Central Board of Secondary Education up to Senior Secondary level w.e.f. the current academic session. Earlier, the school was affiliated to P.S.E.B. Is it a real fight against corruption?

Auto drivers charge traffic police with harassment

The Clock Tower Auto-Rickshaw Union has charged the traffic police in the city with finding new ways to harass three-wheeler owners and drivers, while alleging that the apparent motive was to throw thousands of auto-rickshaw operators out of business at the behest of vested interest.
