Buying house from NRIs can prove costly
Chandigarh, May 13
Purchasing real estate property in the city from nonresident Indians has turned out to be an inordinately expensive deal for at least five city residents. Not only have they paid land prices much higher than those prevailing in the market, they are now faced with the prospect of shelling out another hefty sum in taxes on the profits made by the NRI sellers as the latter have chosen to return to their foreign abodes without clearing income tax dues.

Languor costs UT police Rs 10,000
HC imposes fine for failure to file reply 
Chandigarh, May 13
The Chandigarh police has found itself in the dock for its laidback approach in a case of cyber fraud. In a recent order, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has ordered the police to pay a penalty of Rs 10,000 for the considerable delay in filing a reply in the case.  The police has since then paid the fine, which has been deposited with the State Legal Service Authority. This is said to be the highest ever fine paid by the UT police for negligence.

More fiscal muscle for UT Administrator
Chandigarh, May 13
The UT Administration is set to get more financial muscle. Taking cognisance of the repeated representations of the Administration, the ministry of home affairs (MHA) today agreed in principle to enhance the financial powers of the Administrator to Rs 25 crore frsom the existing Rs 10 crore on the pattern of the other union territories such as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Daman and Diu.

NRI murder case cracked
MC employee among three arrested
Chandigarh, May 13
The police today claimed to have solved the murder of an NRI who was stabbed to death on the night of Holi in Manimajra after three persons, including a sweeper on contractual employment with the Municipal Corporation (MC), reportedly confessed to committing the crime after being arrested here today. The fourth accused is still absconding. The three will be produced in court tomorrow.

Man rams car into friends, one dead

One person was killed while two others sustained serious injuries after they were hit by a friend’s car on the Ghaggar bridge here this evening.

Ex-geology head refuses to return till PU takes action
Chandigarh, May 13
Even as work at Panjab University’s geology department has come to a virtual standstill with the position of chairperson remaining vacant since the past three weeks, the controversy surrounding the resignation by former head, Gurtek Singh Gill, has intensified. In a letter addressed to the dean of university instruction he has refused to withdraw his resignation till the PU administration initiated disciplinary action against AD Ahluwalia, a former faculty member now reemployed in the recently set up petroleum & applied geology department.

3 students hurt in accident
Fatehgarh Sahib, May 13
Three girl students of class IX received injuries after being hit by an SUV this afternoon while they were returning home on foot. The students are studying in Sri Dashmesh Senior Secondary School, Kharauri. They were taken to a private hospital from where they were moved to Fatehgarh Sahib Civil Hospital.

Eight fall ill after food poisoning
Fatehgarh Sahib, May 13
Seven family members, and a servant, from Hussainpura village today fell ill after consuming breakfast at their house. The victims included children, elderly men and women.

AC-inverter showroom gutted in Ambala
Ambala, May 13
A truck carrying household items of two Army officers caught fire in Ambala Cantonment A fire broke out in a showroom selling air conditioners (ACs) and inverters near the main bus stand, gutting the entire shop.
Angad Singh, owner of the showroom, said in a part of the showroom some inverters were assembled. He said he was running a hotel on the first and the second floor of the building.

Fire in OPD causes loss worth Rs 50 lakh
Ambala, May 13
A major fire broke out in the eye OPD of Mission Hospital at Ambala City this noon, which caused the loss of around Rs 50 lakh. Three laser machines of the OPD were destroyed in the fire.

Insurance firm told to reimburse Rs 1.66 lakh
Chandigarh, May 13
The UT Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum has directed ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company to reimburse Rs 1.66 lakh to a city resident for the cost incurred on his treatment under a mediclaim insurance policy. The forum has also ordered the company to pay Rs 25,000 compensation and litigation cost of Rs 5,000.
