The district police has solved the blind murder case of a half burnt unidentified body of a man recovered from the bushes near a protection bandh of Sirshatpur village on April 7 and has also arrested the murderer last evening.This was claimed by SSP Rakesh Aggarwal while addressing a press conference here today.

Sugar mill staff defer strike after 7-day protest

The indefinite hunger strike called by the employees of the The Nakodar Cooperative Sugar Mills against the non-payment of salaries for the last 10 months, today entered into eighth day and state Revenue Minster Ajit Singh Kohar today met the protesting employees and promised them to put their matter in the forthcoming State Cabinet Meeting scheduled to be held on May 13.

Hoshiarpur : During a naka, the Garhdiwala police intercepted an Indica car (PB 24A 9789) and seized 70 kg poppy husk from it on Sunday night.The police arrested one of its occupant Ranjit Singh of Barowal, while his accomplice, Balwinder Singh of the same village, managed to escape under the cover of darkness.

Four persons, including two children, were killed and 8 others injured in different mishaps in the region today.In Nawanshahr, a truck, driven by an allegedly drunk person, hit a rickshaw rehri from behind and crushed two children to death near Mehndipur village on the Garhshanker road here on Monday.

As per information, Jagdish, a scrap picker, along with his wife laxmi and children Shamu (12), Sonia

(6) and Gopal (4), was coming in his rickshaw rehri from the Garhshanker side. A truck hit the rickshaw from behind and crushed Shamu and Gopal to death.

The truck driver, Sonu, resident of Una, Himachal Pradesh, was arrested and a case registered against him, said Vinod Kumar, SHO (City).

Tarn Taran: Two young palledars (grain market labourers) died on the spot and four others, including a woman, were seriously injured in a road accident on the local bypass here late last evening.

The accident happened when two motorcycles collided head-on against each other and the truck ran over two motorcyclists killing them on the spot.

A case under Section 304A, 279, 337, 338, 427 of the IPC against the truck driver has been registered. According to information, the deceased have been identified as Ravi Singh (16) of local Muradpur locality and Kiranpreet Sinmgh (18) of nearby Jodhpur village. The injured Nirvail and Harjit have been admitted to the hospital, where the condition of Nirvail was stated to be serious.

Batala: One person was injured as a combine overturns on a link road near Bal-Purian village here on Sunday night.

The combine was returning to the town after harvesting crop. The driver could not negotiate a narrow turn and the combine overturned in the fields.

Four persons riding on the combine were injured. One of them, Amar Singh, resident of Sadarang village, broke his legs in the accident. All injured have been admitted to a local private nursing home.

Dalit women ‘beaten up, abused by policemen’

Nakodar, May 3
Dalit woman of Nangal Ambia village, near Shahkot, today blamed the Shahkot police for allegedly beating her up at her residence and even blamed them of using abusive language when she was alone at her residence.

In an affidavit given to the press by her husband, they alleged that 14 years back, there was some quarrel in the village and case under Section 323 and 324 was registered at the Shahkot police station. He recalled that though quarrelling parties sought compromise, but his younger brother Ashok Kumar was declared PO because he went abroad before the compromise.

The husband, in an affidavit, also alleged that on April 27, two policemen of Shahkot PS came to their house when her wife was alone and enquired about his younger brother. When his wife refused to divulge any details, the policemen threatened her and demanded Rs 2,000. He alleged that the same policemen in a civil dress came to her house for the second time and again threatened her wife of dire consequences.

“When I complained about this to the Shahkot police, I was told that no one has been sent to enquire about the proclaimed offender.” Husband told the media that, “When he was not at home, two alleged cops came to his house for the third time and beat up his wife.” They even used abusive language and pulled his wife from hair and pushed her to the walls and when his wife raised hue and cry, the cops fled away from the spot. He said from the last five days his wife is being hospitalised in the local Civil Hospital, but no one has come to take her statement.

Simaran Thaper, the victim, alleged that the same cops came to the hospital and threatened her of dire consequences if she divulged the truth. She said she did know the names of those policemen, but she could recognise them. SHO of the Shahkot police station Onkar Singh Brar said he had not sent any cops to the house of the alleged lady and if he found anyone guilty, he would take strict action.

Blind murder case solved, one held

Hoshiarpur, May 3
The district police has solved the blind murder case of a half burnt unidentified body of a man recovered from the bushes near a protection bandh of Sirshatpur village on April 7 and has also arrested the murderer last evening.

This was claimed by SSP Rakesh Aggarwal while addressing a press conference here today. He said Paramjit Singh, alias Sonu, of Dallapur village, PS Bhogpur of Jalandhar district, had been arrested and a Bolero jeep (PB-02-BD-4554) and Rs 64,000 had been recovered from him. The main motive behind the murder was acquiring the above said jeep and Rs 2 lakh from the deceased.

On the morning of the April 7, a half-burnt body of 45-year-old man was found from the bushes near protection bandh of Sirshatpur village, for which an FIR under Section 302, 201 of the IPC was also registered in the Bulhowal police station. The body was 5’-8’’ tall and had marks of injuries on the neck.

A wireless message from PS Nakodar of Jalandhar district regarding one missing person named Balwant Singh of Dhariwal village was received. Keeping in view the resemblance of the half-burnt body with missing person, the Nakodar police station was informed that sent his brother-in-laws Tirath Singh and Jaswant Singh to the Civil Hospital, Hoshiarpur, where body was kept for identification on April 8. Tirath and Jaswant identified the body.

A special investigation team under supervision of SP (Detective) Randhir Singh Uppal, led by DSP (R) Harinder Pal Singh Parmar, was constituted for the purpose. During naka bandhi on the u-turn of Sandhra village last evening, the police intercepted the said jeep, arrested Paramjit Singh and recovered Rs 64,000 from him. During interrogation, Paramjit confessed committing the murder of Balwant for grabbing the above said jeep and Rs 2 lakh cash. SSP said Paramjit was matriculate and served in Doordarshan Kendra Jalandhar for about 3 years.

The indefinite hunger strike called by the employees of the The Nakodar Cooperative Sugar Mills against the non-payment of salaries for the last 10 months, today entered into eighth day and state Revenue Minster Ajit Singh Kohar today met the protesting employees and promised them to put their matter in the forthcoming State Cabinet Meeting scheduled to be held on May 13.

Reacting to the statement of the minister, striking employees who were scheduled to sit on a dharna and to halt the main traffic, along with their family members on Nakodar-Jalandhar GT Road, today decided to postpone the same. Convener of Joint Action Committee Balwinder Singh said if their matter was not resolved in the state cabinet meeting, they would intensify the protest by halting the main traffic.

Centre’s nod to school’s solar power plant

The Centre has given its approval to the proposal of setting up a 25 KV Solar Energy Power Plant facility at the border area Government Girls Secondary School, Kairon, worth Rs 75 lakh.

Principal of the school Dalbir Singh Deol told the Tribune here today that on the proposals of the local Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), the Centre has also sanctioned a subsidy worth Rs 67.5 lakh (90 per cent of the total Rs 75 lakh for the plant) and the letter has been received by the school authorities. The remaining part of Rs 7.50 lakh has been released by Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Punjab, Adesh Pratap Singh Kairon from his discretionary funds. The principal said the school would have 24-hour power supply and the work for installing the plant would start soon. — OC

RCF employees ‘thrash’ SMO

A Senior Medical Officer posted at Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital, Rail Coach Factory (RCF), Kapurthala, sustained grievous injuries after he was beaten up for his alleged uncouth behaviour with the RCF employee’s daughter, who had gone to doctor for treatment.

Dr Sandeep Mehta, who was shifted to a private hospital, said in his statement to the police that members of the staff council of RCF thrashed him at his residence today. He also alleged that he had received some calls during last night to leave the RCF or face dire consequences. Alleging that the complaint made against him is completely false, he said it was a handiwork of some of the RCF employees who want to settle their personal scores with him.

Woman ends life, in-laws booked

Hoshiarpur, May 3
The continuous torturing of a young bride for more dowry has compelled her to commit suicide at Jhangi Mahi Shah village on April 30.

According to police sources, Rattan Chand of Faridpur Doragla, Gurdaspur, stated to the police that he had married his daughter Raman with Naresh Kumar of Jhangi Mahi Shah village about one and a quarter year ago. During her marriage he gave sufficient dowry to his daughter according to his capacity. But his daughter’s husband Naresh Kumar and other members of his family were not satisfied with it and used to torture and maltreat Raman for bringing more dowry for which she informed her parents from time to time, alleged Rattan Chand.

Fed up by the continuous torture for more dowry, Raman committed suicide by consuming poison on April 30.

The Mukerian police has booked her husband Naresh Kumar, mother-in-law Bimla Devi, father-in-law Thoru Ram and sister-in-law Meena Kumar under Sections 304 B and 34 of the IPC and has arrested Thoru Ram. The other accused are still at large. — OC

Addressing the students, Shekhan alleged that more than 50,000 ETT students were being cheated by the managements of various colleges in Punjab. — OC
