Phagwara, April 27
A football match at Lovely Professional University’s (LPU) Chiherru campus near here took an ugly turn last evening with players from the losing Sudanese team thrashing a Mizoram player, resulting in his death.

The incident took place around 7.30 pm during a semi-final match of the ongoing Lovely Professional League. Tempers flared in the second half with the Mizoram team taking a 1-0 lead.

Players from the Sudanese team badly injured 19-year-old Johny F. Lalhmangaihzuala who was rushed to the local Gandhi Hospital where his condition deteriorated. He succumbed to his injuries around midnight.

Three African students - Hashim Idreesh and Ahmed Altagni from Sudan and Sayeed Faizal from Tanzania- have been booked under Sections 302/34 of the IPC on a complaint lodged by Surinder Khurana, security officer at LPU.

Sources said all 11 playing members of the African team had been detained.

Johny was a B.Tech (civil engineering) second- year student at LPU. Belonging to Lunglei district, his father is an SDO with the PWD.

There was tension on the campus as news of the incident spread. Angry hostellers smashed food kiosksat the campus. They also damaged the campus café.

Rashmi Mittal, Pro-Chancellor, LPU, said the university had expelled those behind the incident.

Classes were held on the campus today as usual. However, more than 70 Mizo students came in black to mourn Johny’s death. They got together at noon and demanded that they be taken to the Civil Hospital mortuary where his body was kept. They were taken there in a bus.

At least 400 hostellers staged a dharna in front of the engineering block later in the evening and pelted stones at the building. They were lathi-charged by the police deployed there. The Mizo students held a peace march.
