No complaint against Hanspal: Jathedar: Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh on Friday said he was yet to receive any complaint against former PPCC chief HS Hanspal regarding the allegations against the latter about influencing the witnesses in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The Jathedar said, "I have not yet received a complaint against Hanspal. We will consider it once somebody lodges the complaint." On whether the Akal Takht can summon Hanspal, he said they will mull over the issue after receiving the complaint.

Couple holds painting exhibition: For husband-wife duo of painters Tejinder Ladi Singh and Hema Singh art stood as a stimulant for brain, which make them laugh, weep, reinvent, react and feel other emotions. It is brain which exercises controls over the body and art also aims to influence the brains of humans to transpose them to a different level altogether. The three-day exhibition displaying 60 paintings by the couple kicked off at the Indian Academy of Fine Arts here, covering a wide range of themes like marriage, turmoil, colours of women, landscape and nature.

Widow of freedom fighter dies
: Maharani Goyal, 91, widow of freedom fighter and educationist Bipen Behari Lal, passed away here on Friday. Her body will be consigned to flames at the cremation ground, Grain Market, on Saturday at 10 am.

4 IPS officers promoted: The Punjab Government has promoted four IPS officers in the rank of Deputy Inspector General with immediate effect. Disclosing this, an official spokesman said Arun Pal Singh and Rajesh Kumar Jaiswal had been promoted in the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police. He said that Pawan Kumar Rai and Naunihal Singh who were on central deputation had been granted proforma promotion in the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police.

Hydro Power: The UN’s International Centre of Small Hydro Power on Friday agreed to collaborate with Punjab to generate power from speed and velocity of water flowing in canals and rivers at small falls.

Proclaimed offender held: The Goraya Police has arrested proclaimed offender (PO) Sohan Lal of Garrhi Maha Singh, who had been wanted by the police in different cases of fraud for the last few years. Sohan Lal was cheating innocent villagers by sending some of them to Sri Lanka instead of Greece and taking huge amounts from them.

Abacus learning for state schools: After implementation of the Abacus System of Learning for students of rural government schools in Saultanpur (Kapurthala) under a pilot project of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), a proposal to introduce the concept in other government schools of the state has been forwarded to the state government, said Satveer Singh Dhaka, M D of UC MAS, a company engaged in imparting the learning system.

Elected: Nardev Sharma has been elected president of the Panchkula District Bar Association. Lavish Arora defeated Jaswant Singh by a huge margin of 161 votes for the post of cashier.

UHBVN begins load survey
:The Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam today launched a load survey campaign in premises in the urban areas having a load of more than 5 KW. The campaign will run up to June 30 . An official spokesman said here today that a large group of consumers had installed air-conditioners in their premises and unauthorisedly extended loads. He said unauthorised extension of load was one of the main reasons for the damage of distribution transformers and low voltage in certain towns.

Hooda inaugurates school
: Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda today inaugurated the country’s first laboratory school “Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan School”. Hooda said the school, set up in collaboration with Shri Ram School, was committed to holistic development of children through experimental, joyful learning and educational innovation. It would start functioning from the next academic session and education would be free here till class 8th. One section of most promising students would be given free education in classes after eighth, he added.

Body found: The police has recovered the body of a 22-year-old youth from a mobile shop at Super Market near the bus stand here on Friday. The youth, identified as Manish of Jahangirpur village, had been missing since Thursday night. The police has registered a case of murder against Manish’s friend Rajesh of Kot village and two other youths on the complaint of his brother Rakesh.

Ice candies banned: Fearing an outbreak of cholera and other water-borne and insect-borne diseases during summers, Deputy Commissioner CG Rajini Kaanthan, in an order circulated to mediapersons here recently, banned the sale of ice candies, unripe, overripe and rotten fruits. According to the order, the sale of exposed cakes, sweetmeats, biscuits, breads and drinks, including “sharbats”, lassi and sugarcane juice, has also been banned if not covered properly.

Liquor vend sealed: The administration sealed a liquor vend situated at Pool Bazar here on the demand of residents on Thursday. SDM Satpal Singh sealed the shop with a team of excise officials. Residents of the area had earlier met Deputy Commissioner Saket Kumar saying that the vend was adjacent to a temple. The DC, after getting the site inspected, asked the contractor to shift the liquor vend following departmental rules.

One shot at, hurt: Three motor cycle-borne miscreants, who were wearing masks, fired at Rajbir (42), a liquor vend employee at a vend on the Rewari-Jhajjar road at Bikaner village, 6 km from here, on Thursday night. Sources said when Rajbir told the miscreants that vend owner Krishan Kumar had taken away the sale proceeds, the latter fired at him from point blank range and fled. Rajbir has been admitted to a private hospital here. A case has been registered in this regard.

World Earth Day: A seminar was held to mark World Earth Day in REI Agro Limited, a rice exporting factory, near Bawal, on Friday. Highlighting the importance of World Earth Day, RK Sharma, regional officer of the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB), emphasised the need for maintaining the equivalence of environment to avert any natural calamity. Besides, he exhorted all to eschew the use of polythene bags.

2 wrestlers killed in road mishap
: Two young wrestlers - Sunil (14) and Mohit (15) - of Kumaspur village here died on the spot when they were knocked down by a truck on the GT Road near HUDA’s Sector 7 on Friday. The duo was on the way to the Region Centre of Sports Authority of India from their village on cycles for the morning practice session.

Ponies’ rates for Amarnath yatra: In connection with the Amarnath yatra this year, the DDC, Anantnag, Kifayat Hussain Rizvi, held a meeting on Thursday to fix the rates for riding and pack ponies, dandi labourers and tents at various halting stations. The meeting fixed the rate for dandi at Rs 2,100 from Panjtarni to the holy cave, Rs 300 for labour and Rs 700 for horses while for other stations the rates of last year would be applicable.

Class IV student electrocuted
: A student was electrocuted to death in Kalakhet village near Betalghat. The incident occurred when he came in touch with a live wire supporting an electric pole. The deceased has been identified as 11-year-old Roshan Kumar of Kilmodiya village. He was a student of class IV. He had gone out of his school premises to answer the call of nature when the incident took place. He is learnt to have succumbed to his injuries on the spot. His death followed people venting their anger against the Education and Power Department for putting the lives of people at risk.

Man thrashed after bid to molest woman: A man was given a sound thrashing by women in a locality in Lal Kuan after he had allegedly tried to molest a woman at gunpoint. According to the information, the accused, Dharamvir entered a house in Nagina Colony in an inebriated state. He was posing as an insurance agent. He allegedly tried to molest the woman present in the house after showing her a gun. The woman raised the alarm. The neighbours caught the accused and tied him with a rope and gave him a sound thrashing. Thereafter the people dragged him to the local police station and turned him over to the police. The police is learnt to have recovered a pistol from him.

One killed in accident: One person was killed in a collision between a tractor-trailer and a pick-up vehicle near Bazpur. While the driver of the pick-up vehicle, identified as Balwinder Singh of Gangewala village, was killed on the way to a hospital, four others, including the tractor-trailer driver, suffered injuries. Two of the seriously injured, who have been identified as Dilip Singh and Jaris, had been referred to Haldwani after being given initial treatment at a government hospital in Kashipur.

Man found murdered: A resident of Chakluva, near Kaladhungi, was found murdered in a field on Friday. The deceased, 28-year-old Pradeep Mehra had just been employed as a security guard in a hospital in Haldwani two days prior to his death. He had left his house for going to duty along with Dan Singh of his village in the latter’s car. He did not return home and his body was found the next morning in a field located about 100 metres away from his house. It is being assumed that he was strangulated to death. The police has been questioning Dan Singh on the issue. It is learnt that the victim had a heated argument with some people a few days ago after consuming alcohol and this is being assumed to have led to his murder.

Kin block road over medical ‘negligence’: The Haldwani-Nainital highway became the venue for yet another display of public unrest as yet another case of a girl dying on account of alleged medical negligence came to light. According to information, friends, relatives and acquaintances of Mohammad Shafiq resorted to a road blockade after Shafiq’s eight-year-daughter Shafia had died at a hospital. It was alleged that there was no doctor available to attend to the girl who had suffered an epilepsy fit at home on Thursday afternoon. The agitators alleged that there was no doctor available instantly in the Emergency Ward and by the time one arrived after being sought with the help of a ward boy, the girl had died. The agitators sought dismissal of the doctor on duty for carelessness. The matter was resolved only when senior Health Department officials promised to look into the matter.
