Sail through stress Maniac Monday just over, but terrible Tuesday is looming large; with awful Wednesday and tough Thursday in-waiting…weekdays can cause real stress. If demanding deadlines and endless work has taken its toll, putting you under pressure, we have professionals share how they get by the working week. Change of place
"When strain gets me (which happens invariably at the beginning of the week), I just walk out of my office and sit on the bench in the park that's just across the road," says Nilesh Kumar, an advertising professional. Change of place indeed gets you out of the negative pattern. However short the break may be, it has the potential to refresh you. Try a stroll down the road! Deep breathing
Different techniques suit different people, but one thing that can work for each one of us is deep breathing. "It relaxes your muscles, body and the mind," says Dr HS Pal, stress management consultant and author of 'Treat for Tat'. Keeping calm
Stress is just another hurdle that one can overcome with time. Atul Khanna, director, Durga Das Foundation, shares, "Over a period of time I have learnt how to handle situations positively. When stress gets to me, I just remind myself that I need to be poised. Some thinking and my inner strength helps me regain balance," shares Khanna. Finding joy
Chef Vineet Chopra takes out the picture of his four-year-old daughter Suhani when he faces stress. "Kitchen is stressful at times, but I make it a point not to lose my cool. I step out, have lemon tea and look at my family's picture. Life's beautiful, I realise and I am all set to face the challenges," says Chopra, who has been awfully busy dealing with the party fever that rocked the nation post the Indo-Pak World Cup semi-final, and also at his hotel Shivalikview-17. Being positive
Visualising yourself away from the stressful situation is what Seema Aggarwal, psychologist with JP Hospital, Zirakpur, recommends. "Take 10 minutes out. Switch off yourself from the present chaos and imagine youself at a place that makes you happy. Let the calm descend over you before you get in the war zone again," says Aggarwal. Try positive affirmations, 'All is well', 'I can handle this, 'I am doing well' or 'I will sail through it', it helps." Breath of life
Another sure trick that works is observing your own breathing. "It lets you focus on your inner self and helps you get calm," says Aggarwal. It doesn't require many outside props, just the mental strength. Try this in your cubicle, rest area or even in the privacy of your car. Laughter dose
Another alternative is to log on to Youtube and see some funny clips. "Laughter is the ultimate antidote to stress. Take 10 minutes out to check out humorous SMSes, stories, and a comic clip or for sharing a funny instance with colleagues. It can relieve one of the tensions," says Dr Pal. Every day may not be good, but there's something good in every day, try finding
that! mona@tribunemail.com |
In the social WEB
Blogster brings together the blogging community. Four Square is a location-based mobile social network. If you have anything to do with photography, you should log on to Flickr. And DailyStrength has as many as 22,000 plus people coming together to provide medical and emotional support. There's a sea out there of niche social networking websites. There's one each dedicated to independent music, running and swimming, travel, online games, music and pop culture, books. The list is by no means exhaustive! "One positive thing about such sites is that here, by default, you are coming in contact with people with similar interests," Navdeep Sandhu, young photography artist, shares the pluses of Flickr. She adds, "It's a wonderful community of people who are interested in visual arts. The feedback that I get is amazing." “It's a niche segment,” shares Jasmeet K Shan, public relations executive, logged onto LinkedIn, a business and professional networking website. "I logged onto this site to keep in touch with people I had lost contact with on the professional front. And I also got a lot of invitations from my seniors, who suggested that I become a part of it. It's meant to be used for business networking." She adds, "But as of now, Facebook scores because of its sheer numbers; even though it's general and not niche." The comparisons with Facebook are inevitable. It might have 500,000,000 people logging onto it but Facebook is so general. Your next-door neighbour, second cousin, best friend's brother, high school senior, isn't everyone there? Just because everyone else is there! For some sheer numbers work, while for others they don't. Shrugs Navdeep, "It's not focussed. I mean you have everybody there, which can also be a disadvantage." Opines Isha Kakaria, young professional, "As of now, I'm only on Facebook, because everybody is there. It took people some time to shift from Facebook to Orkut, it'll take them some time to switch off Facebook." Meanwhile, various communities catering to individual interests and issues are sprouting. Who knows next one could be dedicated to all the 'anti-social' elements, bringing together people you'd love to be publicly seen as enemies of…? Or do we have one already! manpriya@tribunemail.com |
Aim HIGH
Success mantra

A keen golfer, swimmer and martial arts practitioner, Jain is widely travelled. He keeps exploring new dimension of business and personal excellence, and has an interest in living a holistic life. He has recently published his first book Ready To Takeoff. Here are a few tips Jain shares with us Hardwork: One cannot be successful without hardwork. One might get lucky once, but that's not the case each
time. Hardwork makes you move towards success. Integrity: Integrity for me is an
alignment between one's thoughts and actions. Those who say something and do something else are not true
professionals. Involving people: One cannot be victorious alone; you need to involve people. Sharing vision creates motivation and takes you closer to achieving your goals. Delegation: Give people authority, chances are they would exceed your expectation. But, yes, keep the control and review. Higher purpose:
One needs to aim higher than individual needs. Bhagat Singh was working for the country's freedom not personal fame. That holds true
even today. mona@tribunemail.com |

Fashionista So what is it that goes into the making of a designer? Is it talent? Is it studying in the right institutions? By the right institution, I mean the well-known one or the most popular one or the best connected? And is it that whoever graduates from these institutions steps out as a well-established designer? Or is it purely talent? If you ask me, I think it is a combination of both. Since designing is a creative process and a designer usually completes in conjunction with the producers of form undertaken to convey a specific message to a targeted audience. Therefore, knowledge combined with talent is the best solution. Look at the garment in the picture alongside. A surgeon green coloured upper in Mysore short silk with an improvised boat neck which is clinging to the neck in a way that it flatters the wearer. Interestingly, the J-sleeves are well constructed to end up just below the elbow making way for any kind of accessory to be worn for enhancement. The flimsy feel of silk is the catch for a perfect fit, which also signifies the art of the application of design and aesthetics or natural beauty to clothing and accessories. The upper flares out with the help of a bias finished with picot edging to end up giving air to the body and putting the sensual appeal across. The lower, which is made in raw short silk of purple and pink with an orange, says it all as far as experimenting with colours is concerned. Again, a pair of loosely fitting Pyjamas, a cross between the pants and the pyjamas, with side pockets edged in colour red says a different story all together. A radical combination with influx of colours is a salient feature of being different and getting recognised. To say that design is influenced by cultural and social latitudes, and is mottled over time and place is very true. India as a continent has evolved and has engulfed many invasions, rulers, and kingdoms and has imbibed all the influences to suit them. How many designers can bring about their attention to such details? Anshu Arora Sen, is one such talent who after finishing her course in Fashion Designing from NIFT in 1997, with an award winning collection, went on to launch her label 'A Small Shop' in December, 1998. The styling is largely casual and easy to wear. The look is not about an age group but more about a certain mindset, and is targeted towards those who are willing to have some fun with clothes! The clothes are about lots of colour, are carefully balanced, simple, yet in interesting shapes. They also reflect traditional hand crafted details reworked in a contemporary context. The designer works from her heart with splashes of emotions. A truly innovative person Anshu feels the pulse of the buyer and uses surface embroidery techniques to render the finer details into her ensembles. As my contemporary, at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, she had a quirky style of dressing. Even her approach was very different. In short, she attracted attention in a totally positive way. A Small Shop explores and tries to reinvent the intense fullness of creative mind with an influx of colours that are beautiful and florescent. With its own set of tool these garments and accessories celebrate with bits of silk, silk linen, taffeta, sequence, beads, a scene of the delicately balanced ecosystem in texture, trim and also silhouette. Par Excellence I believe the route to improvement for a 'Slicer' is from Slicing to Hooking and then to good golf. To correct a slice we need to start by finding out why the clubface is open at impact. The causes could be
If the fault lies with the left hand position (weak grip) this needs immediate correction. This would be the first step. Turn the left hand clockwise while taking the grip so as to see 2-3 knuckles of the left hand. The 'V' formed by the left hand should point between the right collarbone and the right shoulder. I prefer a short left thumb, which means that there should be no gap between the left thumb and the hand and when we place our left hand on the grip the left index finger is lower than the thumb or extended past the thumb. This brings the club more in the fingers than the palm. Check your glove to see the 'wear' marks on it. If the grip is in the fingers the club will be in the double padding on your glove, which is the correct place. If the 'wear' marks are high on the glove near the wrist then the club is in your palm with a weak grip. The club should run diagonally through your hand ending up in the middle of the forefinger. If the wrist is cupped at the top of the back swing the clubface will be open. One way of correcting this is to find the correct position midway through the swing - at the 9 o'clock position when the left arm is chest high or parallel to the ground. Place a long tee in the small hole at the butt end of the grip. As you take a back swing the tee should point at or just outside your target line. This will put the shaft on the correct plane and the wrist will be in the correct position. Hit some balls from this position. Then extend your swing by only turning the shoulders to complete the back swing. He is currently Director, National Golf Academy of India and CGA Hero Honda Golf Academy.) |
Celeb Point The desire for immortality is as old as human awareness of death. No wonder heroes all through the ages were willing to sacrifice their lives for deeds that would be remembered forever; fame, has always been one of humanity's favourite ways to ensure immortality, if only symbolic. The advent of reality TV has changed the landscape of television in our country in the last few years. Kaun Banega Crore Pati, Big Boss, Indian Idol, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa etc have been the top-rated programmes on Indian TV since many years now. All the key national broadcast networks have at least one prime-time reality show a year. Reality TV focuses on the process of transformation that turns an ordinary mortal into a demigod. At first sight, it seems preposterous to think that a celebrity has anything to do with the striving for symbolic immortality. Yet celebrities are invested with a special aura. Hundreds of millions will continue to watch how ordinary mortals become demigods and will hope that one day they will become immortal as well. Bollywood megastars get paid up in crores plus a percentage of profits for the simple reason that their names are the crucial factor in determining a reality shows success. But the striving for glory is not primarily motivated by material gain. Glory is sought because as humans we seek to matter. We want to be significant and ultimately we want to be immortal. The truth also remains that fame matters but only as a means to an end, and the end is to matter to other people. The image I want to leave you with is of the grave of an unknown Naga soldier in Kohima, Nagaland, who died fighting the Japanese in World War 2. It read: A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives. How many of us would dare to dream to live such a life. Think about it. (Imran Zahid is a Bollywood actor.) |

The album comprises a total of eight songs. He shares, "We are trying to give the message of love through this album. It could be love that you associate with friends, your lover, your parents or even
siblings." He adds, "There are a couple of songs that we've composed keeping the younger lot in mind. You'll also find that a few of the tracks are foot-tapping and are such that can be played in the discs and clubs." There are also plans in place to put together the next album. "This is my debut effort. Whatever I've not been able to achieve in this album, whatever little shortcomings that are left, I'll try my best to improve them in the next effort." Post a triple role in a Hollywood movie Bollywood Bride and Indian Ivory, turning to singing was more than a fluke for the actor. "My teacher Shyam Sajan saw the talent in me and I learnt singing from Sukhwinder's father Master Baldev Singh," he says.

Scent of summer!
Fragrances for 2011
Top ten perfumes in 2011
Finding your own scent can be a difficult task, especially when you are looking for a fragrance that appeals to your sense and sensibility.
Though the trend says no to sissy floral fragrance, hotchpotch scent and wilting lilies aroma; think clean and head for lemon, amber, white patchouli, tonka bean, sandalwood and musky perfumes this season.
After all, using colognes, perfumes and deodorants are a smart way of getting the better of those malodorous fumes (read sweat). Smell & buy
Albeit the market is flooded with fragrances, we suggest never buy a perfume just for the brand name or the one which is 'on top' at the moment.
To make a good choice in a perfume you must first try perfume on a clean and non-perfumed skin. It's the best way to test a fragrance.
And yes, before buying try only up to three different fragrances because your nose will not be able to recognise more scents.
And the ultimate tip by designer Amit Kashyap is, "Do not smell the top of the bottle or its cap because the scent you smell is not the real one. You may smell an odour of alcohol instead. You should also not try perfume on a piece of paper, but on your skin for the real fragrance. Image and personality also matters when choosing a fragrance and good perfume generates positive energy." Scent facts
Perfumes are always used on 'warm spots' (where blood flows near the skin) since these spots work as small fragrance pumps.
Though all of us know that perfume works best on wrists, behind the ears, in the inner part of elbows and on a neck near the collar-bone, very few would know that perfumes will last longer on oily rather than dry skin.
So, if you have a dry skin use vaseline or an oily cream before you apply perfume. Take your pick
Since summer is here you must know that fragrances are more intense when it is warm. Therefore, during summer you should either use less of perfumes or use the lighter fragrance. "Elizabeth Arden's latest perfume is doing really well so is Dior and Clavin Klein," says an employee at Pantaloons store in Zirakpur. You can even pick Espirit, David Hoff Perfumes, Adidas and more here. "Summer is about subtle and light fragrances, but when it comes to perfumes people have a very specific choice, which they don't change easily," says Munit from Just Tango in Sector 35. Listing the perfumes that are doing well, he says, "Versace Femme, Armani's Code, CK's Truth and David Hoff Perfumes, are an all-time best seller.
They are all delicate in fragrance, so suit the summers best." Faithful to a brand, an employee at Ebony in Sector 9 says, "When it comes to a perfume, people usually don't experiment much. They stick to a particular brand and don't change it often." Available with them are almost all big brands in perfumes. |

Do Dooni Chaar goes to New York Disney’s critically acclaimed family comedy Do Dooni Chaar, starring legendary actor couple Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, will be the opening movie of the New York Indian Film Festival which runs from May 4 to May 8 in Manhattan. The Habib Faisal-directed film will see its North American premiere at the 11th annual edition of the festival organised by the Indo-American Arts Council. The closing film is Rituparno Ghosh's Noukadubi, an adaptation of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore's acclaimed novel, which stars sisters Riya and Raima Sen. Following the May 8 screening will be a special tribute to Tagore who was born 150 years ago on that day. Aparna Sen's Iti Mrinalini will premiere as the centrepiece selection. The Bengali film features Sen and her award-winning actress daughter Konkona Sen Sharma, both playing the same title role at different ages. New York City's prestigious Paris Theatre will be the home to the star-studded red carpet opening night premiere of Do Dooni Chaar and will be attended by special guests Kapoor, Singh and Faisal. "NYIFF energises New York City's diversity by presenting amazing independent and diaspora films from the Indian subcontinent while keeping a close watch on Bollywood's foray into alternate cinema," says IAAC executive director Aroon Shivdasani. "The three film highlights of our 11th annual film festival represent a Hollywood studio's Indian social cinema, independent cinema, as well as a tribute to Rabindranath Tagore. "Major American studios partnering with India have flirted with NYIFF in the past - Fox Searchlight, Sony, Miramax, and now Disney's contribution to our 2011 opening night — Do Dooni Chaar. Clearly NYIFF is the best platform for these films to reach their ideal demographic market," Shivdasani says. Do Dooni Chaar is a charming and sweet film that reflects the realities of a middle-class family in modern day Delhi," says NYIFF director Aseem Chhabra. — PTI |

Rani Mukerji is back in the limelight and in films. She owes much of this to the success of No One Killed Jessica. The light-eyed beauty, who turned 33 last month, talks to us about love, life, media and more. There was a time when you did not chat with the media. Suddenly, you have changed… I am a laidback person. I would rather spend time with my nephew and family. You will hardly notice me in many events and parties unless it's a very close friend who is throwing the party. Suddenly, I realised that everything has changed and that actors need to be more out there. I always thought there was no need to talk to the media unless my film was releasing, but all this went wrong, and so many bad and wrong things were written about me. And then… So, some actors like me need to understand that everything changes as per the demand. I need to be reachable to my audience via media, as that's the only chain for me to reach my audience. So, I thought of changing myself. You never cleared anything about your marriage rumour? Yes, you are right. It was a rumour. Why should I go and fight about these stupid things? I don't understand who is your source and who informs you all these wrong things. If my house is lit up, the media says that my engagement is going on (laughs). That was quite funny. Every four months, there was a story about my marriage. But let me clear it to you that when I get married, it will be a big hit and dhamakedaar shaadi. Everyone will be invited. You just turned 33. How does it feel? Nothing has changed; just the number has changed, and I am loving my life and age. I have a lot more to do in my life. — HRM |

"It's weird, I feel like a vampire. I do take care of myself, but I drink a fair bit and I still smoke. I've tried to age myself but it's not working," said Phillippe. — PTI
