We will achieve goal with patience, says SGPC chief
Dehradun, April 1 In an exclusive interview to The Tribune, he said: “We had talks with the Chief Minister in a pleasant ambiance where we requested him to allow them to construct the gurdwara at its original place, keeping the historical significance of the holy shrine and the surging sentiments of the Sikh community in due consideration. The Chief Minister, too, assured us of resolving the matter soon and directed the District Magistrate to look into the revenue record pertaining to the existence of the Gurdwara Gyan Godri Sahib”. Makkar exuded confidence in the words given by the Chief Minister juxtaposing it with the close relations the Shiromani Akali Dal (BJP) enjoyed with the BJP in Punjab politics, which extended its tentacles in Uttarakhand as well. He did not seem perturbed for not being given any time limit in this regard. “In Gurbani too Guru Nanak has asked people to keep patience and finish work stage by stage. Therefore, in the first stage, we sent our two high-level delegations, which failed to meet the Chief Minister and in the third stage I’ve personally come with another high-profile delegation, and had a fruitful talks with the Chief Minister. With this pace, we are sure of achieving our goal,” he said. The issue of reconstruction of the gurdwara, which was alleged to be established in 1504-05 when Guru Nanak stepped into Haridwar at Har-ki-Pauri where he preached Hindu priests for the service of mankind, was later destroyed in 1979 under a project for the purification of the Ganga. The original land where the gurdwara was situated was allotted to a commercial office, Bharat Scouts and Guides. The late awakening among the Sikh community and the SGPC over this old issue, that too was timed when the sentiments ran high over the verdict of the Allahabad High Court over the Ram Janmabhoomi and Babri Masjid case raised enough speculations. “We did not pick any threads from the Ayodhya issue. The SGPC came into action as soon as it was apprised of the development by the local units,” he said. Before that, he admitted, he had no knowledge of the existence and significance of the said gurdwara. While sharing the extent of influence which the SGPC exerts not only in the country but overseas also in getting things done in its way, he said: “With just one message, the Pakistan Government revoked the construction of Town Plaza on the land of a gurdwara in Lahore.” He quoted from the episode of Gurdwara Nankana Sahib, which was built by a Muslim fellow who donated 4500 acres for it, and asked the state government to give at least a minor chunk for the construction of Gurdwara Gyan Godri Sahib. “We are even ready for a 10X10 feet land for building a memorial (Nishan Sahib) at the site, if the gurdwara is not possible, so that our coming generations could read out from the text inscribed on it about the contributions of Guru Nanak at the designated place.” A letter sent by the Joint Secretary, National Commission for Minorities, to the District Magistrate, Haridwar, ordering him “to provide the sufficient land” for the reconstruction of the gurdwara was also shown. Makkar made it clear that he would not let the matter subside until it reached its conclusion. The delegation included Rajinder Singh Mehta, Bharpur Singh Khalsa, Harbhajan Singh, Gurdeep Singh, Wriyan Singh, Ram Singh and president of Gurdwara Guru Singh Sabha, Dehradun, Rajender Singh Rajan. |
