Swine flu rears its ugly head again; 4 more die
Number of deaths in city this year rises to 8
Ludhiana, March 10
With four more people succumbing to swine influenza at the Dayanand Medical College & Hospital (DMCH), the total number of deaths since January in the city due to the highly contagious respiratory disease in the city has gone up to eight. This year's mortality rate among those inflicted is 70 per cent with patients testing positive for H1N1 in city hospitals numbering ten.

MC staff gets serious only when bosses show up

That civic employees ordinarily get down to business only when their top bosses make an appearance was again in evidence on Thursday when temporary encroachments that had come up in the Bhadaur House area were shifted elsewhere ahead of a visit by MC Commissioner AK Sinha. The staff members went all out to ensure he did not have a first hand look at their failures.

Garment industry to go on indefinite strike from Mon

The local readymade and knitwear industry has decided to go on an indefinite strike from Monday against the proposal of 10 per cent central excise duty imposed on the industry. The call for the strike has been given by the Federation of Readymade Hosiery and Made-ups Association and the Federation of Hosiery Manufacturers Association of India.

The decision of giving a golden chance to students for completing their graduation and postgraduation from September 2011 has been welcomed by educationists and students. The decision was taken during a Syndicate meeting of Panjab University, Chandigarh, recently. RP Josh, a syndic, said people could sit for a particular examination (compartment case or for an exam that could not be taken due to any reason) after September 2011.

Eatery owners told to install CCTV cameras

With the police having started a hunt for the miscreants involved in snatching of vehicles by serving spiked eatables to drivers of trucks parked at roadside dhabas, the civil administration has directed all dhaba and restaurant owners to install the CCTV on their premises.

Cracking the whip on reckless drivers in the city, the police has intensified its challan drive. Data available with the department shows that the number of challans had increased three times in the last two months compared to January-February last year.

A three-member delegation from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany, is on a visit to Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) for exploring the possibility of collaborative research project in the field of arsenic and selenium toxicity in soils, water, plants, human and animals. The delegation, comprising Professor Dr Thomas Neumann, Dr Elisabeth Eiche and Dr Mini Bajaj, held a meeting with PAU Vice- Chancellor Dr Manjit Singh Kang today.

The notification for extending the date for the submission of C and H forms for the financial year 2009-2010 has been issued by the department. Though the announcement was made in November last year but the notification was not issued by the department.

However, it was his resolve to give the Indian vocal music a new direction that gave this 24-year-old artist the honour to become the visiting professor of Indian classical music at the University of SOAS in London, the UK.

Proclaimed offender arrested

The Ludhiana rural police has arrested one proclaimed offender wanted in a theft case registered against him in 2001. The accused has been identified as Des Raj alias Teetu of Noorpura village near Raikot.
