Gang of robbers busted, 5 held
Jalandhar, March 3 One of the thieves was also wanted in a murder case, which took place in the Rama Mandi locality on September 30 last year. In a press conference organised here today, Senior Superintendent of Police Babu Lal Meena said five gang members, Raj Kumar and Gagandeep of Adampur and Sham Lal, Rinku Kumar and Santosh, all from Jalandhar, were arrested yesterday by a police team, led by Sub-Inspector Angrez Singh of Adampur police station. The gangsters were arrested from a house in the Mohalla Ram Nagar locality, Adampur. Meena said besides 20 tola gold, worth over Rs 4.5 lakh, a laptop, 15 mobile phones, 3 television sets, LCD screen and Rs 50,000 in cash was recovered from the gangsters after interrogation. Superintendent of Police (Detective) Pushkar Sandal and DSP (D) H.K.S. Khakh said the gang was earlier active in Jalandhar city, but later shifted to Adampur after a few of its members were charged in a murder case of Dharmapal at Jalandhar. Sandal said the kingpin of the gang, Raj Kumar, was wanted in the murder case. |
Congress groups clash, one wounded
Kapurthala, March 3 According to information, Mandeep Singh, alias Sunny, of Phagwara, was shot at allegedly by a Punjabi singer of Phagwara over a minor dispute. The Congress worker, who had received a bullet injury in his abdomen, was immediately taken to the Civil Hospital, from where he was referred to a Ludhiana hospital. The organiser of the rally, former MP Rana Gurjit Singh, said the incident had nothing to do with the rally directly. According to sources, the firing incident was the outcome of a clash between the two groups near Lovely Professional University (LPU), Phagwara, when they were coming to Kapurthala to attend the rally. Both the groups again started fighting while taking their meals immediately after the completion of the rally. The person, who fired at Mandeep Singh, managed to flee from the spot. One group reportedly belongs to a former minister, Joginder Singh Mann, whereas the other is close to Mann’s rival Congress leader Balbir Raja Sodhi. Both Mann and Sodhi are aspirants of Congress ticket from Phagwara. Balbir Raja Sodhi visited the hospital to inquire about Mandeep’s health. Meanwhile, SHO of Kapurthala (City) police station, Kulwinder Singh said the police would register a case on the statement of the wounded person. A police party had already been sent to the Ludhiana hospital to record his statement. |
Won’t spare Akalis for booking Cong men in false cases: Amaninder
Kapurthala, March 3 Amarinder Singh said he did not believe in vendetta politics but he would not spare Akalis and police officials responsible for falsely booking as much as 30,000 Congressmen. The way the dictatorial regimes were collapsing in the Arab world, the same thing was going to happen in Punjab, he added. Former CM said special emphasis was needed to be given to health, education and agriculture. He reiterated that the next Congress government would cancel the allotment of land to the Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and set up a modern hospital with super-specialised facilities there so that common people can get treatment there at affordable cost. The Akalis had sold the 66 acres of prime land worth Rs 2,400 crore in Jalandhar to one particular person for just Rs 131 crores which is peanuts, he added. The leader of the opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal lashed out at Akalis for raking up sensitive and emotive issues at the time of elections only. Referring to the raking up of 1984 riots issue by the Akalis she pointed out, the Congress President Ms Sonia Gandhi and the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh had apologised for these riots besides relief had been provided to the victims. Prominent among those who addressed the rally included Hoshiarpur MP, Ms Santosh Chuadhary, Rana Gurjit Singh, Sukhpal Khaira, Rajbans Kaur Rana and others. Those present on the occasion included Lal Singh, Amarjit Samra, Chaudhary Jagjit Singh, Arvind Khanna, Joginder Singh Mann, Jasbir Singh, Vikram Chuadhary, Major Amardeep and Sukhwinder Sukh. |
Manpreet’s rally evokes overwhelming response
Jalandhar, March 3 He said he had sacrificed his position in the Cabinet for the sake of the future of the state and now he had vowed to fight for the bright future of all Punjabis. Manpreet was accompanied by MLA Jagbir Singh Brar and Dr Navjot Singh Dhaiya, in charge, Shahkot constituency. “Presently, the state is a den of corruption and unemployment, poverty and the debt burden are the order of the day,” he said. Punjab, that ranked first on the development index of the country, was today at the bottom of the graph, all due to the anti-people and faulty policies of the SAD-BJP regime, he added. Brar also flayed the ruling alliance and said a little was being done to pull the state out of the mess it was in today. The government was without a vision and was only making grand statements without anything to show on the ground level, he alleged. |
Jalandhar: The SAD general secretary, Prem Singh Chandumajra, today came out in the defence of the patron of the Youth Akali Dal Bikramjit Singh Majithia saying that the Congress leaders, who themselves have been using derogatory languages in their speeches, should not feel hurt by his comments. Majithia has repeatedly resorted to comments against PPCC president Capt Amarinder Singh to which the Congress leadership has been strongly reacting. Chandumajra in a press note said today that the era of starting war of words should be ended and rather a more respectful atmosphere should be created. |
Ruling BJP ‘benefiting’ interlocking tiles manufacturers
Jalandhar, March 3 Leaders of the opposition have already started levelling allegations against the ruling BJP leaders for promoting its use to benefit the owners of a tile-manufacturing factory based at Manimajra, who happen to be representatives of the party. A finger was pointed out today by former Congress minister Avtar Henry in this context during a media interaction. But on being questioned further, he refused to divulge more details claiming that the matter would be raised on a more appropriate platform and timing. Congress councillor and Leader of the Opposition in the MC House Jagdish Raja, too, has raised the matter on a number of occasions. “There clearly is a mala fide intention behind the use of the tiles, which cost triple the amount than the ordinary cemented roads. On the contrary, the life of roads constructed with interlocking tiles is far shorter,” he alleged. He lamented, “The tiles start coming out quickly. If one tile comes out and is not replaced timely, all the tiles in the row become loose and start coming out. A round to Gur Mandi and Bansanwala Bazaar gives a clear-cut indication of this”. The other Congress councillors, including Rajinder Beri, Kuljit Babbi and Balraj Thakur, have also repeatedly voiced their demand of reducing the use of tiles and constructing roads using concrete. “The concrete roads are far more durable, cheaper and comfortable for a drive. The tiles tend to make roads uneven. These even get broken quickly and cannot even bear any heavy load,” they have been claiming. The councillors said since a few top BJP leaders of the state were insisting on increasing the use of tiles, the Mayor and Commissioner were also not able to speak up on the matter. “Recently, more tenders were passed for the use of tiles than concrete for road laying. In fact, some previously passed tenders for road relaying using concrete were cancelled to replace construction using tiles,” they rued. Commissioner Viney Bublani, on the other hand, favours the use of tiles. He had his own points, “In case of tiles, a small portion which gets damaged can be easily repaired by changing tiles. The rainwater seeps inside the tiles easily and gets stored as groundwater easily, whereas cement flooring acts as a complete barricade to water. Roads with tiles appears more presentable. The bed levelling corrections in road laying can be done more easily in case of tiles.” He confirmed that the procurement of tiles had been speeded up and more agencies had been roped in for the purpose. |
Govt’s development claim lies exposed: Khaira
Jalandhar, March 2 Ironically, Haryana has got approved an annual plan for Rs 20,000 crore which not only indicates the poor fiscal situation of Punjab but also the seriousness of the state in raising crucial funding issues with the Centre, he added. Khaira said the fiscal deficit of Rs 3,100 crore means that the state would be further burdened while bridging this huge gap. Punjab is already under a colossal debt of Rs 70,000 crore that does not allow any planned development of the state, he added. But unmindful of this, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal is on a foundation stone laying spree backed by full page advertisements claiming mega development of the state, Khaira said. This amounts to wasting of public money hoodwinking the masses for cheap political gains, he alleged. He said the Badals were also misleading the electorate by showcasing major flagship programmes of the Dr Manmohan Singh government as their own. These include the Jawahar Lal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM), National Rural Health Mission, Sarb Sikhiya Abhiyaan (SSA) and Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY) schemes to lay foundation stones and garner political support for their party. Elected opposition MPs as well as MLAs of the Congress are ignored at such events, he added. |

Govt resorting to pressure tactics: Kin of Puducherry Governor
Jalandhar, March 3 The family today said while it was being alleged that a notice of house tax arrears had been served against the Lieut Governor and his wife for dues to the tune of Rs 1.21 lakh, they were actually regular tax payers. “There are no dues pending of any tax authorities for financial year 2009-10,” the family claimed. MC assistant commissioner PS Ghuman today said the house tax of the same amount were due from the couple but for the month of December 2010. “We only had been pressing them to make the payment before March 31,” he added. However, Abhay Singh said no MC bill or demand had been ever made by the MC in this regard. “The MC has issued notice in a newspaper to about 70 persons and the names of Iqbal Singh and his wife have been mentioned to malign them because of understandable motives,” he has written in a press note. He has further alleged, “I along with eminent citizens of Model Town had held a press conference questioning the transfer of Mayor House to Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Corporation. Now they are targeting us by wrongly inducting the name of Dr Iqbal Singh in newspaper notice and then by pinpointing it in a malafide way.” |
Docs’ federation demands more funds for health sector
Jalandhar, March 3 The government must allocate at least Rs 1,70,000 crore for this purpose but the allocation for the next fiscal is a merely 0.29 per cent of the GDP, that is too meagre for this purpose. “The projected GDP for the year 2011-12 being Rs 8,98,0860 crore, the allocation for the health sector should have been at least Rs 1,69,617 crore instead of Rs 26,760 crore, the funds allocated for the coming fiscal,” said Dr DC Sharma, president, Docsifed India. Welcoming the move to impose service tax on the big private hospitals, he said it would make the healthcare facilities costlier only for the upper creamy layer of the society but not for the common masses, said Sharma. Such hospitals are already beyond the approach of the common man. Imposition of service tax on these hospitals is a non-issue for the common man, he added. “However, the government should simultaneously develop an equally sound and enormous health care network, to cater the total needs of all the patients, who are otherwise compelled to go to private hospitals due to unavailability of adequate and good services in government hospitals,” he added. |
Government ‘patronising’ criminals
Phagwara, March 3 Talking to mediapersons here yesterday, Khaira alleged that though Akali MLA from Banga Mohan Lal is facing a murder charge but no arrest could be made till so far. He demanded immediate arrest of the Akali MLA to prove impartial working of the police and the government. Commenting upon the statement of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal about his allegations that the Congress is less than 30,000 in Punjab and how can Congress leaders blamed the Akali-BJP government to book 30,000 Congressmen in false cases, Khaira claimed that he himself had won the last Assembly elections with a margin of more than 50,000 votes and Sukhbir should estimate himself about the total numbers of Congressmen in the entire state. Khaira alleged that the Badal family itself had no faith in the Health Department of Punjab and prefer the treatment of Surinder Kaur Badal from the US, thus how can the government inspire people to take services of the civil hospitals of the state. |
