A magisterial probe into the multi-crore rupee fraud in the allotment of booths in Sector 41 in the early 1990s has recommended a CBI probe against Chandigarh MP and union parliamentary affairs minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, former Mayor Pradeep Chabra, UT Adviser and the city’s senior most bureaucrat Pradip Mehra, former Deputy Commissioner RK Rao, and about a dozen other middle to junior rung UT Administration and police officials for allegedly committing the fraud.

Thousands of devotees throng temples to celebrate Shivratri
Panchkula, March 2
An estimated 250,000 devotees from all over the region gathered at the Sri Shiv Mandir, Mahadevpur in Saketri village near here on Wednesday on the occasion of the major Hindu festival of ‘Mahashivratri’. As the crowds spilled over on to the streets the entire temple premises resounded with slogans of ‘om namah shivay’.

‘Cyanide 2011’
Acting skills of students put to test

The second day of ‘Cyanide 2011’, the annual cultural event of University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Panjab University, kicked off with Pagg Yaar Di, a turban-tying competition, in which more than 60 youths participated. The UICET lawns were abuzz with activities such as face painting, tattoo making, Tell-a-Tale, sudoku and draamebaaz- where the acting skills of students were put to test.

A 23-year-old Dalit youth from Damanheri village committed suicide after being accused of committing a theft. The victim has been identified as Balwinder Singh, who worked as a helping hand at a cycle repair shop in the village.

Two snatchings were reported in the city today, with cash and a mobile phone snatched in separate incidents. In the first incident, Love Kumar, a resident of Ram Darbar, Phase I, was attacked by Gaju and Saranjeet, who took away Rs 2,000 and a mobile from him.

The local police conducted a search operation in hotels and restaurants ahead of the ICC World Cup match between South Africa and The Netherlands at Mohali tomorrow. The police also checked vehicles to keep a tab on the activities of anti-social elements. Gatka meet from March 5

The Punjab Gatka Association (PGA) will organise its Ist Punjab State Open Senior Gatka Championship-2011 under the aegis of the Gatka Federation of India (GFI) at Dasehra Ground here from March 5. Association president Harcharn Singh Bhullar, SSP Sangrur, said gatka teams from all districts of the state would participate in the tournament.
