Grenade found in cremation ground near border
Ferozepur, February 10 The residents of the village, who panicked after seeing the bomb-like object, immediately informed the police and stopped the digging. A bomb disposal squad of the Punjab police also reached the spot today. This is the first incident of recovery of arms and ammunition from underneath the ground in the border district. Last year, many such instances came to light when a large number of arms and ammunition including grenades and live bombs were recovered from various spots, located in the close vicinity of the Indo-Pak border. Police sources said a team of Army personnel, experts in handling ammunition and explosives, also reached the spot today and carried out the inspection. The Army personnel were expected to defuse the grenade by late in the evening today or early morning tomorrow. A large chunk of area in the cremation ground was also dug up by the labourers in presence of the Army personnel. However, no explosive material could be found. Police sources said the grenade was more than 10 years old and its pin and liver had got rusted. Such grenades were used by anti-national elements during terrorism in Punjab. Sources said a letter from the Mamdot police station, under whose jurisdiction, village Rahime Uttar fell, had written a letter to the Army authorities for taking necessary action in this regard. A case would be registered in due course,
sources said. |

Cases of hepatitis B & C reported in Moga villages
Moga, February 10 In the Baghapurana sub-division, as many as 142 patients have been found infected with the deadly virus of hepatitis B and C, sources in the health department revealed. The worst affected villages include Samadh Bhai, Samalsar, Marhi Mustafa and Patto Hira Singh. Such cases have also been reported from 10 other villages in the area. Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Amarjit Singh Sidhu, while talking to The Tribune on phone, said the cause of infection is the use of inadequately sterilised needles and syringes by the unqualified medical practitioners and intake of drugs through injections by drug addicts. He emphasised upon the need to strengthen the routine surveillance system and organise an education campaign targeting all the health care workers including private practitioners. While appealing to the people not to panic, he said there is nothing to worry as the hepatitis B and hepatitis C infections could easily be treated in the initial stage by taking adequate precautionary measures. In reply to a question, the CMO said he would form a committee of senior medical officers along with the drug inspector to conduct a survey and take legal action against the quacks operating in the far-flung areas of the district. |
Resentment in SAD ahead of Majithia’s rally at Moga
Moga, February 10 The rally, which is to be presided over by Bikram Singh Majithia, former minister and patron of the youth wing, is viewed by the political observers as an exercise to attract the youths towards the ruling SAD in the wake of the political situation that arose after the exit of former finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal from the party. It has been witnessed that Manpreet is getting a fairly good response from the youth and drawing impressive crowd in his ongoing ‘Jago Punjab Yatra’ that has to some extent disturbed the policy makers of the ruling party. However, it is for the first time that the chief parliamentary secretary of the state and a three-time MLA from Dharamkot assembly segment of the district, Sheetal Singh has openly expressed his resentment against the official machinery of the district and his fellow workers have announced that they would boycott Majithia's rally. A section of the SAD workers of the area attached with the ruling party for decades, who held a meeting under the leadership of Sheetal Singh at Dharamkot on Wednesday, have alleged that most of the officials of the district administration are not listening to their grievances. On the condition of anonymity, they said a senior leader of the SAD is interfering in the area exerting pressure on the official machinery, leading to factionalism within the party. Sheetal Singh admitted that a meeting of his followers was held yesterday, in which, they unanimously expressed their resentment and decided not to participate in the rally. “Keeping in view the party interest, he was trying to pacify the situation. However, the situation is going out of his control,” he said, and added that the party high command should interfere in the matter and restore the confidence of the party workers in the area. It may be mentioned that former SGPC member Kuldeep Singh Dhos, who has a good influence in Dharamkot area, has recently joined hands with Manpreet Badal giving a set-back to the ruling party. |
ID proof must for Rly passengers from today
Sriganganagar, February 10 The scheme was introduced in 1997 and the passengers had to indicate the number of their choice of identity card at the time of booking tickets and carry it with them during the journey, failing which, they were considered to be travelling without ticket. The provision was subsequently withdrawn in August 2004. At present, there is no such condition of producing any identity card either at the time of booking or during the journey. However, in view of the complaints received in the recent past over alleged irregularities in the Tatkal scheme, the railways decided to re-introduce the need for carrying any of the following eight identity proofs in original during the journey: (I) Voter’s photo identity card issued by the Election Commission of India; (II) passport; (III) PAN card issued by the Income Tax Department; (IV) Driving licence issued by the RTO; (V) Photo identity card issued by the Central/State government; (VI) Student identity card with photograph issued by recognised school/college for their students; (VII) Passbook of nationalised bank with photograph; (VIII) Credit cards issued by banks with laminated photograph. Bohra said a passenger or anyone of a group of passengers would be required to produce one of the eight listed proofs in original during the journey , failing which, all the passengers travelling on the said ticket would be treated as ‘without tickets’ and penalised. — OC |

Chander Parkash/ TNS
Fazilka, February 10 Official sources said the tractor-trailers had been impounded as the drivers had carried out illegal mining of drain, which was constructed for eradicating waterlogging in that area. They had collected the sand to sell it. Sources said contracts given to different people for mining of sand from all the sites, approved by the Punjab government in Fazilka sub-division, expired last month. A section of unscrupulous elements with the active patronage of a section of ruling politicians had started carrying out illegal mining of the same sites and other spots to mint money. The authorities concerned had also deployed cops near the sites of sand mining, located near Ganju Hasta, Gagan Ke, Miani Basti and Badha villages of the sub-division. The drivers of five tractor-trailers had been identified as Ajeet Singh, a resident of village Pakka Chisti, Jeet Singh of village Muthianwali, Pawan of village Kieran, Binder Singh of Nai Abadi, Fazilka and Rajinder Kumar of village Aspala. The driver of one of the tractor-trailers fled from the spot. Police said action against the drivers would be taken as per the complaint, if any, lodged by the authorities concerned. A committee headed by SDM (Fazilka) Ajay Sood, today sent a report to the DC in connection with three sites located in the sub-division. Officials of different departments were consulted for preparation of the report. |
