No major violence during elections: Report
Misses woods for trees; overlooks election-day violence

In a finding that has caught many university dons by surprise, an inquiry report prepared by Justice KC Gupta, a retired High Court judge, has observed that “there was no major violence during the Panjab University campus students council elections” held in September last year.

Shocking but true: A mere 20 per cent job seekers, registered under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MGNREGA) scheme in the district, were given employment by the Department of Rural Development and Panchayats so far this financial year which will conclude in a little over two months.

Man robbed of cellphone at knifepoint

A man working at a lottery stall was robbed of his mobile phone at knifepoint by four unidentified suspects in Sector 40 late last night. Ashok Kumar, employed by Punjab State Lottery in Phase 2, Mohali, had to undergo two stitches on his face as a result of the attack

Parents flay move to get dyslectic kids centre to pack up
Chandigarh, January 24
High drama prevailed at the education department office at the UT secretariat today when parents of over 40 students protested against the department’s decision to ask the Joy Lall centre for dyslectic students to vacate its current premises at the Government Model School, Sector 8. They urged officials to roll back the order saying the move would result in the centre shutting down, which they asserted would “deal a big blow” to the education of many students enrolled there. Breach of protocol in Fire Dept
MC appoints junior officer to lead R-Day parade
Chandigarh, January 24
In an apparent breach of protocol, the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) has nominated a comparatively junior officer of the Chandigarh Fire and Emergency Department to lead the contingent of the department at the state-level Republic Day function at the Parade Ground, Sector 17, here on January 26.

Chandigarh, January 24
The UT Consumer Forum today sentenced the proprietor of OP Pest Free Control Services, Ritika Alhuwalia, to six month imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 for non compliance of its earlier order for payment of compensation to a complainant. The forum also issued a non-bailable warrants against her.

The Chandigarh Administration has asked the joint secretary finance and director higher education, Ajoy Sharma to look after the charge of DPI (schools). However, there are no formal orders to this effect.

Following Saturday’s incident of certain outsiders bashing up a PU student near the chemistry department canteen at Panjab University campus, a notice was today displayed outside the chemistry department stating, “Parking for staff of chemistry department only”.

Misuse of government houses
Politicians top the list
Patiala, January 24
Politicians top the list in misusing official accommodations, even using them for political purposes by bending government prescribed norms. Topping the list is independent Ghanaur MLA Madan Lal Jalalpur, who got himself a fully furnished official accommodation on the prime location in Patiala. More than twice he has held political functions affiliated with the Congress in this house. However, he could not be contacted for his comments.

Man killed in accident, wife serious

Ajit Singh (53), a resident of Balongi in Kharar, died in an accident last evening while his wife Malkit Kaur is undergoing a treatment at the PGI, Chandigarh, with leg injuries. The couple was on its way back to Balongi from Kalara village where parents of the deceased reside.

Tanishq dacoity case
9 sent to 14-day judicial custody
Chandigarh, January 24
A lower court today sent the nine accused in the Tanishq dacoity case to 14 days’ judicial custody. The accused were arrested on January 15 in a joint operation with a team of the Chandigarh and Delhi police. Two members of the gang are still absconding.

Torture in Custody
HC summons Ambala SP
Chandigarh, January 24
Apparently miffed over the probe into the allegations of torture and sexual harassment of Rajasthani workers in custody by officials of Baldev Nagar police station, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today asked Ambala Superintendent of Police (SP) to be present in person along with the record of investigation.
