All tourists, who were Haridwar traders and their families, were coming back home after a picnic at the Kempty Falls in Mussoorie, when one of the buses (UA-08-3944) they were travelling in fell into the gorge at about 9 pm. Bela’s childhood fantasies come alive in ‘Daayen Ya Baayen’
Dehradun January 6 Bela has passed out from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, and is coming up with a Hindi film titled “Daayen Ya Baayen”. She originally hails from Nainital and runs, with her husband Shubho, a production house, Nitric Films, where the two make commercials and corporate films. “The film, ‘Daayen Ya Baayen’, revolves around the scenic beauty of Uttarakhand where a character Ramesh Majila (Deepak Dobriyal) narrates having to live through his follies to understand himself better. He returns from the city to his small remote village in the Himalayas. Armed with irrepressible enthusiasm, he hopes to be a breath of fresh air the village has been waiting for. But instead, his quirky traits and a penchant for catalysing disaster make him the joke of the village,” asserted Bela when questioned about the story of the movie. For her debut film, Bela chose to illustrate the universal appeal of Uttarakhand through its theme. The story of the film aims at entertaining, while telling a story with a unique flavour that can denote social and psychological realities of the hills. When asked about where she got the inspiration to make this movie, she said, “As a child I had often visited the village of my parents in the remote hills of Uttarakhand. The unique flavour of life there - the simplicity of people compounded with their complexity, the sadness of the hills peppered with the spontaneous joy in small everyday things and the desperate struggle to make ends meet offset by a wise philosophical view of life inspired me to make film on the life of Uttarakhand”. She also expressed her contentment to work with Girish Tiwari “Girda”, a renowned Kumaoni poet, with whom Deepak Dobriyal, Badrul Islam, Manav Kaul, Pratyush, Jitendra Bisht, Dilawar and Bharti Bhatt have shared the screen. The writer-director said she desired to encourage artistes of Uttarakhand while giving them the opportunity to showcase their talent on the national cinema. “The film has entirely been shot in Uttarakhand, with the cast belonging to Uttarakhand. The entire process of film making was a thorough learning experience for me as well for the amateur theatre actors from Nainital and Almora who are the part of this film. I would specially congratulate and express my thanks to the bulk of the cast who were villagers and facing the camera for the first time,” she added. |
Village panels help discipline rural schools
Dehradun, January 6
“Members of the committee motivate parents to ensure that their children regularly attend schools and also keep a watch over teachers so that the classes are conducted regularly. The involvement of village committees helps in monitoring the performance of students and children,” said Bhanu Prakash Kukreti, District Coordinator, Inclusive Education, SSA. They also ensure proper running of schools under the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). If there is a broken window pane in a school and a school boundary wall has to be built, the committee takes up the proposal at the meeting. In many villages, they have even helped in the construction of broken walls through voluntary labour. In fact, they are also responsible for the proper spending of cash allocated under the Sarv Nidhi (SSA programme). In addition, the VECs also make alternative arrangements for deployment of part-time staff in schools that are without teachers. “In hilly areas, the problems of shortage of teachers is sorted out at the community level by taking the services of the unemployed youth. They even collect funds at the local level that will go towards their salary,” said Kukreti. There is a peculiar problem in the educationally backward blocks of the Dehradun district like Chakrata and Kalsi where very few teachers like to be transferred. In these situations the Village Education Committees step in to appoint volunteers who are made shiksha mitras in the due course of time under the Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS). They also arrange for buildings and land for the schools. Another area where the VECs are playing an important role is in the distribution and implementation of midday meals. They are now in the forefront of providing these meals during the summer holidays in drought-hit districts of the state. |
Yamnotri: Upgrade of rest houses along yatra route proposed
Dehradun, January 6 A large number of pilgrims and tourists visit the area every year. As a result, a lot of human activity takes place in the forest area which directly or indirectly affects the flora and fauna of the region that has places of pilgrim or tourist interest such as Barkot, Gangnanai, Hanumanchatti, Jankichatti, Yamunachatti and Ranachatti. But the FRHs at these places are in deplorable condition and need to be improved. The FRHs are heritage buildings with two bedrooms. The FRHs, which require an upgrade, are along the yatra route where water, other facilities and requirements can be easily fulfilled. The Department of Forests has been made the working agency for the developmental work at the FRHs. After the upgrade, forest officials will be able to patrol the nearby forests to check offences there, stated the annual report prepared by the UTDB. Forest extension activities will also
be promoted among pilgrims, nature lovers or tourists. Local persons will also get employment. With the extension of roads, the forest will become easily accessible. This could lead to direct or indirect damage to the forest by the general public. The onus has been put on forest employees to take up long-distance patrolling so that fires, illegal encroachments, felling of trees and poaching do not take place. Pilgrims to the Yamunotri Dham travel mainly on the Delhi-Yamunotri National Highway-123 and a major part of the route falls in the Upper Yamuna Forest Division. Pilgrims and nature-loving tourists have increased manifold over the years. The proposed ‘van parao’ (forest-shelter home) will give them a proper place to rest. And there, the personnel of the Forest Department can easily convey the importance of forestry to these pilgrims and tourists. So many van paraos have been proposed along the yatra route. The upgrade of FRHs will include improvement in toilets, kitchens, repair of buildings, furnishing and equipment. Many will gain by the completion of the project. Forest officials will have more support to look after the forests. The local public will get employment. Pilgrims will get better wayside amenities. A positive message will go to pilgrims and nature tourists. Infrastructure will improve. Forest extension works can be regulated through these spots. |
