Even as the ruling Congress and its UPA Government was struggling against Opposition’s (read BJP) attempt to paint it as “corrupt” and “scam-ridden”, it received another jolt in the form of an income-tax tribunal order that reiterated kickbacks in the 25-year-old Bofors gun deal.

Hero group’s CFO arrested
Gurgaon/New Delhi, Jan 3
In the second arrest related to the unfolding Citibank fraud, the Gurgaon police today arrested Sanjay Gupta, a senior official of the Hero group. Gupta was produced in a local court, which remanded him in five-day police custody.

Punjab crime victims to get compensation
Cabinet gives nod to policy; CrPC section modified

The Punjab Cabinet has approved the formulation of a “victim compensation policy” that would ensure immediate monetary assistance to victims of a crime or their dependents where there is a fatality. The policy has been formulated on the direction of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

PM asks scientists to ‘think out of box’

Asking scientists to think “big” and “out of the box”, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said “the time has come to produce Ramans and Ramanujams” and cross new horizons. At the same time, he cautioned scientists on “illiberal” uses of technology and cited use of nuclear weapons, applications of synthetic chemistry in agriculture and in poison gases and “perverse use” of genetics in Nazi Germany to drive home his point.

Now, a blood test that can detect cancer Washington, January 3 In what may pave the way for personalised treatment for cancer patients, scientists claim to have developed a blood test that can detect even a single tumour cell that could lead to the disease. A team in Boston, which has developed the test, says the studies using the experimental test will start this year, with support from global healthcare giant Johnson & Johnson, before it’s being marketed worldwide.
