World AIDS Day:
R.R. Bawa DAV College for Girls organised a lecture on AIDS awareness to observe World AIDS Day on Thursday. The seminar was held under the aegis of the Dr Hargobind Khorrana Science Society, Women Studies Centre and NSS unit. The first session was for the  students.

Bathinda
Workshop held:
Shri Muktsar Sahib Mahatma Gandhi State Institution of Public Administration (Chandigarh) conducted a two-day workshop-cum-capacity building for the panchayat samiti members of block Gidderbaha and Muktsar at block office. Mandeep Singh, district co-ordinator (MAGSIPAP), Parampal Kaur Dhillon, Darshan Lal Kansal, resource persons, Vikramjit Singh Khera, district president, presented their views on the occasion.

Fazilka
Career counselling:
A seminar was held on career counselling at the local SKB DAV Senior Secondary School (Fazilka) on Saturday. More than 100 students participated. Representative of Chandigarh-based Educational Institute Pearls, Guramneet Mangat apprised the students of job opportunities in various fields at national and global level. Principal Madan Sharma said the aim of seminar is to make the students aware of job prospects in different subjects that they opt for to make their career.

Principal honoured:
Noted philanthropist and Principal of the Pt Mohan Lal SD College for Women was given with the Indira Gandhi Woman Achiever of the Year award by the India International Friendship at a function held in New Delhi. Vice-chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities Dr H.T Sangliana gave away the award to Neelam Sethi who has taken part in many national and international seminars pertaining to education.

Armed Forces Flag Day on Dec 7:
The District Sainik Board will celebrate Armed Forces Flag Day at Punjab State War Memorial on December 7. Deputy Director of the Sainik Board, Lieut-Col Manmohan Singh said GOC, 11 Corps, Lieut-Gen Munish Sibal would be the chief guest, while Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti would preside over the function.

YC yatra to reach Jalandhar  on Sunday: “Nav Inqlab Yatra” of the Punjab Youth Congress (PYC) will reach Jalandhar district on Sunday. Addressing a meeting of office-bearers of the District Youth Congress (Rural), its president Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary said the yatra would enter the district via Beas on December 5. The participants in the yatra will make a halt at Sarai Khas for the night. The yatra will re-enter Jalandhar through Phillaur on December 11. After a night’s halt in Phillaur, it will proceed towards Ludhiana.

Awareness drive for pensioners launched: Members of the All-India Central Government Pensioners’ Association, North India region, yesterday launched an awareness drive for the benefit of Central Government pensioners and family pensioners. V.S. Jolly of the association said through this awareness drive pensioners and family pensioners would be told about the pension schemes. “The existing pension system has been streamlined and made simpler for the pensioners. We will highlight the various benefits and the changes brought out from time to time,” he added.

Murder accused arrested:
While claiming to have cracked the murder mystery of Kalawati (35), a cook, the police in Padampur area had arrested Om Parkash Nayak of Chak 20 BB village after a long chase in Loonkaransar area. He has been remanded in police custody for further investigation. A half-burnt body of a woman was spotted by some persons on November 26 in the morning.

Police sports meet: Hosts, Sriganganagar district police, won the overall trophy during the 35th Bikaner Police Range annual sports meet that concluded here on Friday. Bikaner district was declared runners-up. The prizes were given away by ADGP (Armed Battalion) Kanhaiya Lal Bairwa, Major General KJS Thind, GOC Amogh Division, Air Commodore Ravindera Nath of Suratgarh Air Station and the BSF commandant Mohammad Bilal Khan. SP (Sriganganagar) Rupinder Singh led the team in receiving the trophy. Sunil Kumar and Kanta were honoured the best athletes among the male and female cops respectively. Churu district police won the final match in volleyball.

Jammu
Two held with intoxicants:
The Samba police yesterday claimed to have arrested two drug peddlers and seized about 1,000 intoxicant capsules from their possession at a naka in Fallan Morh Diani near Samba town. The accused have been identified as Ricky Verma and Sonu Kumar, both residents of Jammu, the police said. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered at Samba police station in this regard.
