France echoes US, wants changes in India’s N-Bill
Says civil liability law must adhere to global standards

New Delhi, December 2
Like the Americans, the French too are asking India to bring its civil nuclear liability rules in conformity with international norms. This has been conveyed by France to New Delhi ahead of French President Nicholas Sarkozy’s visit to India from Saturday, sources today said.

SC hits out at Raja

Rejecting former Telecom Minister A Raja’s pleadings that he showed great respect to the Prime Minister and his Cabinet colleagues, the Supreme Court today observed that he used intemperate language in his letter to the PM, bluntly rejected as “out-of-context” the then Law Minister’s suggestion and kept the Finance Ministry in the dark on decisions relating to the allocation of 2G Spectrum in 2008 at 2001 prices.

Army Chief Gen V K Singh today said India has no "Cold Start" doctrine as claimed in the secret American documents and dismissed the US perception about the Indian Army being "slow and lumbering".

The Met Office has predicted that temperatures are likely to stay below normal in December, January and February. The cold wave has already tightened its grip over the hills of Himachal with Shimla registering a sharp fall of 5.1° Celsius on Thursday. Jammu and Kashmir also continued to reel under intense cold conditions with the mercury dipping to -13.2° Celsius in Leh, which witnessed the coldest night of the winter. The minimum temperature settled at -2.2° Celsius in Srinagar, one degree below normal.

Navy chief Admiral Nirmal Verma addresses a press conference in New DelhiIndia will use its indigenous nuclear-powered submarine INS Arihant for ‘deterrent patrol’ aimed at providing the ability of a retaliatory ‘second strike’ in wake of a nuclear attack. The submarine, when on patrol, will carry its full load of nuclear-tipped missiles that can be launched from under the sea and hit targets hundreds of miles away.

BrahMos missile test-fired successfully
Balasore (Orissa), Dec 2
India successfully test-fired the 290-km range BrahMos cruise missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur off the Orissa coast today. The supersonic cruise missile, with precision strike capability, was test-fired from a mobile launcher at 11.00 hrs from the launch pad no. 3 of the ITR, defence sources said. “The trial was successful,” they said. The missile, which can fly at 2.8 times the speed of sound, is capable of carrying conventional warheads up to 300 kg for a range of 290 km.

Airlines propose fare hike, DGCA nod unlikely
New Delhi, December 2
Domestic airlines may have proposed a massive hike in air fares, but they are not likely to have their way. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is unlikely to give its nod to airlines’ proposal. In addition, the government plans to approach the Competition Commission of India to ensure there is no cartelisation among airlines. The government has asked national carrier Air India to provide competitive and transparent airfares to passengers.
