Improvement Trust’s land acquisition process faces opposition
Jalandhar, October 28
Residents of Qazi Mandi, Santoshi Nagar, Bashirpura, New Gandhi Nagar, Amrik Nagar and Peer Baba Mutt Shah said they had called for intervention of the Deputy Commissioner in getting the proposal cancelled. They said the Deputy Commissioner assured them that the land currently occupied by over 2,000 families would not be acquired forcibly. Arjun Singh, a resident of Peer Baba Mutt Shah, said around 250 families of his area were sustaining on growing vegetables and fruits in their small land holdings, harvesting them daily and selling the product in the market. “In case we are evicted from this land, we will not just lose our shelter, which is within the farm, but also our means of livelihood. We are being told that we would be compensated by being allotted a shop, but I am sure that such promises would be kept,” he added. Ashwani, a resident of New Gandhi Nagar, said over 400 families in his colony had been putting up since the past over 40 years. “We have been paying up water and power bills but we of course do not have our houses registered in our names. Our representatives have met the officials of the trust several times after we were asked for objections. We are just keeping our fingers crossed,” he said.

Young generation can bring change, says Manpreet
Phagwara, October 28 Addressing a day-long national seminar - Samkaleen Hindi Sahitya mein Punjab ke Sahitya ki Bhoomika - organised by the Hindi Department of Kamla Nehru College for Women, Phagwara, in collaboration with the UGC, Manpreet Badal, motivated students to take up cudgels against bribery, illiteracy, poverty and unemployment, which hamper the progress of India. He encouraged young students to dedicate their lives to the nation. Manpreet Singh Badal and Jagbir Singh Brar, MLA, Jalandhar Cantonment were the chief guests on the occasion, while Dr Vinod Babbar, Editor, Rashtar Kinkar, was the guest of honour. The keynote address was delivered by Shiromani Sahityakar Dr Harmahinder Singh Bedi. Highlighting the position of the Hindi language at the international level, Dr Bedi pointed out that every third person in the world is proficient in this language, which is fast becoming the preferred medium of communication in trade and commerce. He said even US had planned for the development of Hindi in its budget. Enlightening the audience about the importance and contributions of writers of Punjab to Hindi literature in all ages, Dr Babbar averred that contemporary Hindi literature owed a great deal to Hindi writers from Punjab. Prominent among other luminaries were Dr Manmohan Sehgal, Dr Babu Ram, Dr Kailash Bhatt, Br Brahmanand, Dr Inder Singh Thakur, Dr Hukum Chand Rajpal, Dr Amar Singh Wadhan, Dr Sunita acted as a resource persons and threw light upon various facets of Hindi literature and the invaluable contribution of writers from Punjab. Principal Kusum Verma, Dr Kamaljit Kaur, head, Hindi Department and members of college management committee, faculty members and students were also present on the occasion.

Phagwara, October 28 Initiatives should be taken to organise seminars against drug menace and in favour of culture sports throughout the state”, said Dr Davinder Singh Chhina, director of the Punjab Cultural Promotion Council - the international folk ensemble, while talking to The Tribune in the town, on Wednesday evening. International folk artists and students, who had represented by the state of Punjab under the banner of Punjab Cultural Promotion Council, in one of the biggest world folk festivals at South Korea recently, were also honoured by PCPC director, Davinder Singh Chhina and PCPC team international, here on Wednesday evening. Among those honoured on the occasion were Verleen Kaur, Krishan Kumar Jassa, Talwinder Singh, Mandeep Singh - gatka artist, Jaspreet Singh Bablu, Nitish Kumar and others. International sufi singer, Dev Dildar and his talented son Chetan Dildar regaled the audience with traditional folk singing. Dev Dildar congratulated the PCPC Team International for its worldwide efforts in the propagation of rich folk traditions of the state in record 86 world folk festivals. Professor Balwinder Pal Singh, RS Sohal, Dr Sarabjeet Singh Chhina, Sukhdev Singh Rana, national awardee, Dr Sarabjeet Kaur Sohal, national awardee, also congratulated the PCPC team for its grand participation in the South Korean Folk Festival. Chhina announced that an 11 member European delegation would visit and explore the heritage of Punjab in the first week of November on the invitation of Punjab Cultural Promotion Council. “The European delegation would visit the Golden Temple, Amritsar, apart from participating in the 3rd Punjab Multicultural Festival at Ludhiana and Khalsa College International Folk Festival, Amritsar, in the first week of November,” said Dr Chhina, while talking to the media. Prominent personalities, who have brought laurels to Punjab in the field of education, culture, and sports, would be honoured with VIRASAT AWARDS 2010 in these international events. PCPC also launched its website www.punjabcpc.org and asked the talented youth of Punjab to join the Punjab Cultural Promotion Council on Facebook too.

Czech Republic delegation visits RCF
Kapurthala, October 28 The objective of the visit was to see infrastructure and manufacturing facilities of the RCF as Czech Republic is exploring business avenues in India and is interested in supply of various systems/sub-systems for railways. The delegation was apprised of the modern infrastructure of the RCF. They were taken for a round of the workshop and were shown stainless steel coach-manufacturing process. A presentation was also made regarding development and manufacture of various types of coaches at the RCF. They were impressed with the facilities available at the RCF. The recently manufactured double-decker rake was appreciated by all of them. Speaking on the occasion, Ivo Vykydal said Czech Republic was interested in developing relations with India and interested in exporting various assemblies for railway coaches used by the Indian Railways. He said the beginning of this friendship would last for long. The RCF GM, Pradeep Kumar, said, “RCF is a modern production unit of the Indian Railways and it has enough experience to design and manufacture coaches as per the users’ requirements. However, Czech companies can participate in our global tenders and share their expertise in the upcoming technologies for the mutual benefit of both the countries.”

Pay fight: Lecturers’ dharna enters 4th day
Phagwara, October 28 The dharna is being staged to pursue the long-pending demand of lecturers to implement UGC pay scales that has been notified by the state government with effect from August 1, 2009. The Vice-Chancellor of the Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, also endorsed the notification letter of the state government in the month of February 2010. In the press-note issued here today, the lecturers said the government had also increased the budget provision for the 95 per cent grant-in-aid scheme, for the implementation of new UGC pay scales. All the members of the PCCTU college unit, including Prof Nanak Singh Mahal, Dr Bimlesh Birdie, Prof Baljit Kaur, Prof Neeru Sharma, Prof Yogesh Sharma, Dr Mona Vij and Prof RBS Aulakh, sat on a dharna in their respective vacant periods. The VC, GND University and the DPI were also requested to intervene, so that the management of the college may be requested to do the needful.

Vajra Corps celebrates Infantry Day
Jalandhar, October 28 It was on this day, barely three months after independence, that the nation faced its military challenge. The territory in Kashmir was intruded by tribal marauders with the active support of the newly-formed state of Pakistan. The Indian Army was put to test in an operation that earned for it a unique place in the history of warfare. Pakistan would have succeeded in this treacherous plan, but for the bravery of the soldiers of the Indian Army and the state forces, especially the Infantry units. To mark the occasion, a wreath-laying ceremony was organised at the Vajra Corps War Memorial, to pay homage to comrades who made supreme sacrifices for the nation. As part of the Infantry Day celebrations, a function was held at the Vajra Officers Institute, wherein GOC of Vajra Corps, Lt-Gen Munish Sibal was the chief guest. Besides serving officers, a large number of Infantry veterans and other dignitaries graced the occasion. |

Sikh mission to meet Rahul on corridor issue
Jalandhar, October 28 President of the USM Rachpal Singh Dhindsa said Rahul Gandhi had decided to meet their representatives following a Bill passed in the Punjab Assembly in which it was asked from the Union Government to pursue the issue of constructing the corridor with Pakistan. Veteran Akali leader and president of the Kartarpur Sahib Darshan Abhilashi Sanstha Kuldeep Singh Wadala has been spearheading a movement for the construction of the corridor on the border from Dera Baba Nanak in India to Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara in Pakistan since 2001. He along with Sikh sangat held the first “ardas” (prayer) on Baisakhi nine years back at Dera Baba Nanak Gurdwara for the construction of the corridor. Since then, it has been continuously organising “ardas” at Dera Baba Nanak every month on “Amavasya”. |

The duo of wrestler sisters Geeta and Babita have changed the people’s perspective forever that wrestling is no longer a taboo for Indian girls. Given a chance they can rock the world with their fantabulous feat. Their success is notice worthy because of this reason also that they are from a state where female Now, it is ripe time for the common people to shed their inhibitions regarding other games except cricket, particularly, after this biggest ever extravaganza. Indian youth has never earlier felt the raving madness of victory. These games have created an unprecedented interest among the youngsters for their new sportspersons. The post graduate department of computer science and Sanskrit of the local Kanya Maha Vidyalaya organised a three-day workshop on computational Sanskrit from October 27 to 29. The School of Hospitality of Lovely Professional University organised a chef competition. The competition was divided into two chef categories, senior and junior. Fifteen students participated in the competition. Students used their technical skills to prepare three-course menus. Mandeep Singh of BHMCT and Rahul from BSc Hotel management first year were declared winners in senior and junior categories, respectively. Sania from MSc Nutrition and Dietetics and Jaspreet Singh from BHMCT second year were declared runners-up. 2,763 cases solved in lok adalats
Phagwara, October 28 He disclosed that 2763 cases were decided in 47 lok adalats organised by the committee. He said compensations worth Rs 6.07 crore were provided to the deserving applicants and complainants. He disclosed that 57 seminars and legal literacy camps were also organised. Assistant District Attorney Kapurthala Smt Ritu Jain, Bar Association Phagwara, Miss Anita Kaura Advocate, also attended the meeting. |
