Freshers  welcomed:
A freshers party was organised at Doaba Group of Colleges. Students of B Tech, DIET, DWIET and pharmacy welcomed new students. A cultural programme was presented, which included songs and folk dances of Himachal and Punjab. Performers of giddha, bhangra and natti were adjudged best. Chief guest was Avinash Rai Khanna, member, Rajya Sabha.

Rayat and Bahra college: Rayat and Bahra College of Engineering and Bio-Technology for Women organised a freshers party. Literary events marked beginning of the extravaganza. Quiz, debate, jam, poetry recitation and paper presentation were held. Swati Singh was named Miss Talented, while Surbhi Saini was crowned Miss Fresher.

Life term for murderer:
Balbir Singh of Bheen village was awarded life imprisonment in a murder case by a local court today. He was convicted for the murder of Kuldip Kaur in September 2004. The case was registered on the basis of a complaint lodged by Gurjit Singh in which he had alleged that Kuldip Kaur had died due to fatal attack by the accused.

Purse snatched: Two unidentified motorcyclists today snatched a purse containing Rs 25,000 from a woman in Sector 38 here. Monika said it was around 2:30 pm when she was targeted when she was returning home after withdrawing money from a bank in Sector 21. The motorcyclists were wearing helmets and the victim also failed to note down the registration number of the two-wheeler.
