Police Lines gets a gym
G.S. Paul/Tribune News Service

Amritsar, August 27
Sparing a thought to change the typical image of policemen with layers of flab, the Amritsar police authorities have endeavoured to add a ‘gym’ to their daily drill. The venue would be the Police Lines, just on the upper floor of the medical centre which houses state of the art multigym. This gym would exclusively for the cops and their family members. Though, no fee would be charged from the employees associated with the local police, but a nominal fee would be charged from their immediate family members.

Nevertheless, after wielding the stick and regulating traffic, the Amritsar cops would dispose of those extra pounds in this multi gym, installed at a cost of Rs 2.8 lakh.

The authorities have identified two police personnel, with sports background, who would be present all the times to supervise and instruct the cops on exercising machines, which were most sophisticated electronically equipped displaying each and every detailing of the person who operate them.

The Commissioner of Police, Amritsar, Varinder Kumar, who initiated this addition, said, “The police cops with their tough schedule of work hardly find little time to have regular timely food or even spare time for their family. These situations disturb their mental as well as physical equilibrium. It was need of the hour to get them into a routine where they would workout to get them in shape. In turn, this gym would also help them get relieve from the stress and make them more physically as well as mentally fit”.

Apparently, the entire approach had its beginning while through a recent routine check-up camps, organised in the Police Lines, it has been found that quite a number of cops were afflicted by ailments, mostly due to obesity.

But it would be quite a challenge to persuade these obese personnel to shed flab or maintain health keeping in view their general habit of ‘boozing’, reportedly, after their hectic late night duty hours.

Yet, the Commissioner of Police seemed to be quite confident of good response to the new beginning. “This gym would held them gain relief from several ailments and develop trim build. We have decided to make it open all the time for their convenience and full time instructors would be there to guide them”, he said.

“Besides this, we have been conducting free medical check-up camps, in association with Fortis, in the Police Lines itself, for the last over a month where over 800 police personnel had undergone the basic tests related to blood, lever, kidney, heart etc. on the basis of which their medical cards have been prepared”, he informed.

“These camps help detecting any ailment, if they have, at the earlier stage. Otherwise, I had observed that with hardly any time left for themselves, they go on ignoring their health problems and only go for medication when the ailment gets crucial. So in a damage control exercise, we have decided to organise such medical camps regularly, so that they should be benefited with timely medication for the ailment, in case they have”, he opined.

Amritsar, August 27

The name of Jasbir cropped up in self-immolation case, where he was allegedly accused of inciting a woman to immolate herself in the premises of Deputy Commissioner’s Office on August 23.

He has been absconding since then. Commissioner of Police Varinder Kumar said after the registration of the case, his office received a number of affidavits from the residents who claimed that they were duped of lakhs of rupees by the accused.

On the other hand, he contacted her uncle Narinder Singh, present occupant of the disputed house located in Sultanwind village, to shell out Rs 50,000 for getting the legal hurdles removed in taking over the possession of the part of property, reportedly, in her name. He reportedly paid Rs 8,000 in two installments to the accused. Manpreet Kaur had a dispute with her uncles over a piece of ancestral land measuring 100 metres. Upon failing to get the possession of the property from her uncles after the demise of her parents, she had doused herself in kerosene in the DC office premises. Cure for arthritis: Doc spells out innovative ways

Amritsar, August 27
The advancement in the joint replacement medication has now made the possibility of customised procedure exclusively made according to the physical anthropology which referred to the measurement of the human individual for the purposes of understanding human physical variation.

Dr Manuj Wadhwa, Director, Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement Surgeon, Fortis Hospitals, while speaking to The Tribune disclosed about this innovative procedure to cure arthritis.

“Yes, it is now possible to design customised joint replacement. But this ‘made to order’ facility is available in the US only because they have those particular softwares. In that case, CT scan is done on the patient’s problematic joint, according which they develop instrumentation in accordance with the required size and shape precisely. This whole procedure takes just four to six months to import them,” said Dr Wadhwa.

Arthritis, better known as inflammation of a joint, shows pain during activities, limited range of motion, stiffness of knee, swelling and tenderness of joints, feeling that joint may give out and deformity of joint such as knock-knees or bow-legs.

Dr Wadhwa, basically hailing from Amritsar, has already crossed the landmark of performing more than 5,000 knee and hip joint replacements. He has now forayed into the shoulder and elbow joint replacement, knee and hip areas.

“An estimated life of joint replacement instrumentation would be between 15 and 25 years, depending upon the patient’s weight, his lifestyle and of course the technique adopted in the replacement procedure.

“I advise the patients to refrain from doing physically tough exercises, avoid sitting on the floor with cross legs and also avoid sports activities which require running, jumping or squatting, especially on hard surface. Playing football, basket ball, volley ball, hockey, tennis would be fatal for them”, he prescribed.

Dr Wadhwa cautions those who have sedentary lifestyle and are overweight. One out of every five people in ages of 18 to 44 suffers from one such problem or another. Similarly, more than two, out of every five individuals, between ages of 45 to 64 exhibit arthritis symptoms.

“It is more common in over weight patients and weight loss tends to reduce symptoms associated with arthritis as hips and knees get worn out early in heavier patients. Every overweight elderly should emphasis on shedding those few extra kilos and have freedom from arthritis pain to a considerable extent,” he said.

Dr Wadhwa revealed that not only overweight, but genetic factors too play major role in incidences of ailment. Knee arthritis tends to run in families besides trauma to knee, meniscus tears or ligament damage and fractures to bone around joint being some of other causes.

Arthritis, better known as inflammation of a joint, shows pain during activities, limited range of motion, stiffness of knee, swelling and tenderness of joints, feeling that joint may give out and deformity of joint such as knock-knees or bow-legs.

“But with introduction of latest tissue preserving total knee replacement surgery things have started changing for good for arthritis patients. This latest painless and blood less knee replacement surgery technique ensures swift recovery. It is combined with benefits of minimally invasive surgery, patient specific implants with higher flexibility, modified pain control concepts and minimal bleeding even to suit elderly population,” he said.

Dr Manuj Wadhwa has to his credit successfully performing bilateral total knee replacement (TKR) surgery in a single sitting on a 90 year old patient who was suffering from end-stage knee arthritis.

Amritsar, August 27
The Sarb Hind Jat Rakhwankaran Sangharsh Committee, being dejected by the double standards adopted by the government in considering the Jat community in the OBC category, has threatened to disrupt the Commonwealth Games to be hosted in New Delhi in October.

Karnail Singh Bhawra, state president of the committee, said the community, which had been left out of the OBC category in some states and also at the Centre, deserved to get reservation. Terming the goverenment’s approach as discriminatory, the members of the committee decided to take on the government if their demand was not met.

They said they would take out a “rath yatra” starting from the Golden Temple on August 29 at about 10 am and marching through various states. The yatra would enter Haryana on September 9.

There would be a “rail roko” agitation in Amritsar on September 13 and total close down in Delhi and UP in protest against this discrimination.

Karnail Singh Bhawra said they had already written letters to embassies of those nations who had been scheduled to participate in the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

“All the nations which are participating in these games have remained under the British rule. We oppose these games. We have intimated the respective embassies about our motive of opposing the Games at any cost,” he said.
