22 die as bus plunges into gorge near Shimla

Shimla, August 19
Less than 24 hours after a truck mishap claimed 37 lives in Mandi district, a private bus today rolled down into a 300-foot gorge near Chaila, around 40 km from Shimla, killing 22 persons.

The accident took place at around 4 pm when the brakes of the bus, which was on its way to Shimla from Shrontha, allegedly failed and it fell into the ravine.

SSP RM Sharma who visited the spot said the preliminary reports indicate that the accident was due to a brake failure. “The passengers said that the driver was reversing the bus to give pass to another vehicle when the brakes failed and it fell into the gorge,” he said.

There were 53 passengers in the bus. Of the 31 injured, 28 have been admitted to Indira Gandhi Medical College in a serious condition.

Police and others engaged in rescue operations said they were finding great difficulty in identifying the bodies that are smeared in slush due to heavy rains throughout the day.

Majority of the deceased belonged to villages in Kotkhai area. Governor Urmila Singh, Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, Union Steel minister, Virbhadra Singh, CLP leader Vidya Stokes and other leaders have expressed grief over the mishap.

Deputy Commissioner JS Rana reached the spot immediately to oversee the rescue operations.
