As the nation observes the 25th death anniversary of Sant Harchand Singh Longowal who paid with his life by signing a path-breaking Accord with then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on July 24, 1985, with the earnest intent of bringing peace to terror-gripped Punjab, many key questions remain unanswered.

22 die as bus plunges into gorge near Shimla
Shimla, August 19
Less than 24 hours after a truck mishap claimed 37 lives in Mandi district, a private bus today rolled down into a 300-foot gorge near Chaila, around 40  km from Shimla, killing  22 persons. The accident took place at around 4 pm when the brakes of the bus, which was on its way to Shimla from Shrontha, allegedly failed and it fell into the ravine.

Mitochondrial Eve, the maternal ancestor to  all living humans, most likely lived about 200,000 years ago, a new study  has claimed. Researchers at the Rice University have conducted what they describe as the most “robust” statistical comparison of 10 human genetic models to confirm that the mother of all living humans lived at the same time when modern humans are believed to have emerged.

Bill to award death penalty to hijackers
New Delhi, August 19
The government today introduced a Bill in the Rajya Sabha seeking to award death penalty to those involved in the hijacking of civilian planes. The Anti-Hijacking (Amendment) Bill, 2010, was introduced in the Rajya Sabha by Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel and it seeks to have a provision to deal with hijacking.
