An ironical part of God’s decree has emerged from the August 6 flood and mudslide. The posh area of Leh, the old city, which houses the classy eateries, lodges and restaurants, has escaped the fury of nature while the newer part of Leh where the middle class and the poor live, stands devastated.

The Ministry of Defence is considering the idea of having a tunnel at the Zojila Pass on the 475-km Srinagar-Leh road. The pass is a vital link between the Kashmir valley and Ladakh.

Divine power? All Ladakh gompas safe
The cloudburst and mudslides of Ladakh on August 6 did not affect any of the historic Buddhist monasteries and gompas located all across this Buddhist-dominated area of Jammu and Kashmir. The two UNESCO heritage sites, Alchi Gompa and Hemis Gompa, besides other monasteries and gompas are safe and have not been ravaged by floods or mudslides.
