Mannan (Jalandhar), July 27
The situation at the Mannan village, located near Dera Sachkhand Ballan, is still tense but under control.

As many as eight persons, including six women, have been wounded, reportedly in a lathi-charge by the Jalandhar rural police at Manna village here yesterday night.

The wounded persons have been identified as Chinni (75), Darshan Lal (55), Darshan Kaur (50), Asha Rani (36), Neelam Rani (30), Sudesh Kumar (32), Asha Rani (35) and Palo (30).

The wounded persons and police officials have leveled allegations against each other.

While the wounded persons allege that police lathi charged them to remove ‘Amrit Bani’ from a religious place belonging to the Ravidass community, at the behest of the politicians belonging to the ruling alliance, police officials claim otherwise.

They claim that villagers had attacked cops who were present there to maintain law and order.

A lady constable Sarabjit Kaur sustained head injuries during the stone pelting, the officials added.

An FIR has been registered against a village youth Balwinder Kumar, alias Ghugg, and several unknown persons under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC at the Maqsoodan police station in this regard.

However, the wounded persons alleged that the cops removed ‘Amrit Bani’ in a pre-planned manner.

When the members belonging to the Ravidass community opposed this move, the police lathi charged them in the premises of the religious place itself.

Presently, the situation at the village is tense but under control. A large number of cops have been deployed in the village to avoid any untoward incident.

Having accomplished eye donations from 200 persons and lighting up the lives of almost double the beneficiaries, the Eye Donation Society here has rendered Yeoman’s service. The society has achieved the feat in just five years.

The first step in this direction was taken by society general secretary Charanjit Singh Bheen himself who donated the eyes of his grandmother Swaran Kaur.

By and by, the social message spread through word of mouth. Efforts bore fruits and nearly 3,300 people have pledged their eyes till now.

The donors are not just limited to the district alone. The list includes people from across the district, with many from Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana, Barnala and even Ropar.

Bheen revealed that a team of 21 volunteers across the state immediately rushed at the call from a deceased’s family, with a doctor, to get the eye donated.

“Whatever the cause of the death - an accident or otherwise - and whatever the age, a healthy eye can always be extracted,” he makes the appeal, adding that the donors’ list included people of the age group from four to 115 years.

The society revealed that there were still 50 lakh people in the country who were awaiting eye donation. They said the donated eyes were sent to Dr Ramesh, a state awardee based at Ludhiana, at the Punarjot Eye Bank Society.

Tribune News Service

Gurdaspur, July 27
Gurdaspur MP Partap Singh Bajwa has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to set up an institute of higher education either in the Majha or the Doaba regions of Punjab.

In a letter written to the PM and Human Resources Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal, Bajwa criticised the uneven growth of higher education institutions in Punjab, saying that 90 per cent of universities were scattered in the Malwa region.

To make his point, Bajwa said top educational institutes like Punjabi University, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Baba Farid Medical University of Health Sciences, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Rajiv Gandhi National Law University and World Sikh University were all located in the Malwa region.

He added that the proposed IIT would be set up at Ropar, which also falls in the Malwa region. Bajwa added that there was just one institute of higher education - GND University - in the Doaba region.

He claimed that there was a lopsided distribution of universities in the state and urged the Prime Minister to set up more universities in the Majha and Doaba areas of the state.

The MP said, “In the modern day competitive world, no country can progress without quality education. To achieve this, the Government of India has earmarked funds for the vertical and horizontal growth of education with the intention of taking education to the areas which have remained grossly neglected.”
