Unified Command to battle Naxal menace
Centre okays more logistic support 
New Delhi, July 14
In what is a first step at forming a common strategy for states hit by Naxal violence, the Centre today announced setting up of a Unified Command in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal. Realising that development and action in Maoist areas should be together, the Centre also announced that over Rs 1,750 crore would be spent on developmental projects in the four states.

Chlorine leak leaves 92 sick

A fireman being treated at a hospital At least 92 persons, including several students of a maritime college near the Mumbai Port Trust, were hospitalised after chlorine gas leaked from a cylinder which was part of a consignment of scrap material on Wednesday morning.

Punjab cops raided trader’s house, HC told
Chandigarh, July 14
Just over a week after Delhi businessman Ashish Kumar created a flutter in the Punjab and Haryana High Court by claiming that Punjab Vigilance chief Sumedh Singh Saini was out to eliminate him, his counsel today claimed his house in Delhi was raided by the Punjab Police.

Bharatiya Janata Party office secretary Shyam Jaju -- a virtual permanent fixture at 11, Ashoka Road -- has made himself scarce following reports of major financial bungling. In a written statement issued in his name yesterday, Jaju said: “I am shocked to see the news about issuing of summons to me by ACMM Ajay Pandey regarding alleged involvement in financial irregularities. 

ACRs within purview of judicial bodies: Tribunal
Chandigarh, July 14
Holding that the courts cannot close their eyes if flaws and illegalities in Annual Confidential Reports (ACRs) are brought to their notice, the Armed Forces Tribunal had rejected the contention of the Defence Ministry that ACR matters cannot be looked into by judicial bodies.

Court says no to Indian interpreter
Technicalities led to yet another adjournment in the Mishri Khan murder case in which 17 Indian youths are facing death sentence. The Appeal Sharia Court in Sharjah adjourned the case till September 1 after refusing to accept Punjabi-Arabi interpreter provided by the Indian Consulate. The court also wanted a proper power of attorney from the kin of the deceased. he 20-minute hearing saw the courtroom packed to capacity. There was also a large representation from overseas Indian community besides a large number of the local and international mediapersons.
