Amritsar, July 1
Amritpal (17) was murdered with the consent of her mother, alleged her maternal aunts here today, perturbed by reports that the state police is investigating if the girl committed suicide.

The three maternal aunts today claimed that their sister and the deceased’s mother, Rajbir Kaur, had called them up to inform that the girl was being stubborn and therefore she had been killed and cremated. “Uska kaam kar diya,” she told them. Expressing dissatisfaction over the local police absolving Rajbir, the three aunts — Kulbir Kaur, Gurwant Kaur and Kuljit Kaur — demanded a CBI inquiry and insisted that their sister be booked for her complicity in the crime. Rajbir Kaur had married Mehtab Singh, her brother-in-law, in 1998 after her husband died in an accident in 1992. Amritpal was born after her father’s death. Rajbir Kaur has two more children. The family migrated to Belgium in 1999.

The girl had arrived here on June 26 along with her parents from Belgium. The same evening she ‘died’ and within an hour of her death, she was cremated. According to the police, no death certificate was issued by any doctor before the cremation at the Shivpuri crematorium run by the Durgiana Temple Committee.

The girl’s immediate family did not approve of her relationship with Lakhwinder Singh (23) who wanted to marry her once she attained the age of marriage. Speaking over the phone from Belgium, Lakhwinder today said that Amritpal had a premonition and had voiced her fear before leaving for India“If you do not receive my call within two days of reaching India, be sure that something untoward has happened to me,” she told him at their last meeting. She also gave him the phone number of one of her aunts in Amritsar. “Amrit agreed to go to India only after assurances that they would allow us to get married after they returned,” he claimed.
