Patwari dismissed:
Deputy Commissioner Kahan Singh Pannu today dismissed Patwari Gian Singh from his services for tampering with official records and abusing his official position. He was terminated under rule 5 (9) of Punjab Civil Services Rules 1970.

Change of guard at NFL
: Kulbhushan Verma, executive director, has taken over the charge of the NFL’s Bathinda unit on Wednesday. Earlier, Verma worked as executive director at NFL Corporate Office, NOIDA. Verma has been associated with NFL for over three decades and has vast experience in technical and non-technical disciplines.

Statistics Day observed: “Statistics Day” was observed under the presidentship of deputy economic and statistics advisor (DESA), Bathinda, Jagdip Singh on the premises of DESA office on Tuesday. On the occasion, Jagdip Singh spoke on the topic “Child statistics-2010”. He also spoke on bonded child labour and decreasing number of girl children. The officials took a pledge to resolve the problems related to children.

Microtek event: The Microtek International Private Limited, New Delhi, on Wednesday organised a programme “Microtek priority club dhamaka 2010 celebration” here. The dealers and distributors of the company took part in the programme. On the occasion, a lucky draw under “Kuber ka khajana” scheme was held. A cultural programme was also held.

JP Birdi retires:
State DGP (Law and Order) JP Birdi retired on Wednesday after putting in 33 years of service. A recipient of the Padam Shri as well as Police Gallantry Medal besides other decorations, he served on sensitive postings during his career. These include DIG, Chief Minister’s Security, DIG, Jalandhar Range as well as ADGP, Crime. Birdi, who is from the 1977 IPS batch, was elevated to the post of DGP recently.

62 students selected by IBM India
: As many as 62 students from different zones like Delhi, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand and Himachal Pradesh were selected at a mega recruitment drive of IBM India Pvt Ltd organised at Rayat Bahra education city, Hoshiarpur, on June 26 and 27. About 2,200 students of B.Tech and MCA took part in the event, according to group chairman Gurvinder Singh Bahra.

One killed in car-bike crash: Raj Kumar of Bhikhowal was killed and Amandeep seriously injured when an Indigo car hit their motorcycle at Naloian Chowk here on Monday. Amandeep was admitted to the Civil Hospital from where he was referred to the DMC, Ludhiana. The Sadar police has registered a case against car driver Deepak Kumar of Adamwal.

Fire incident
: A telephone exchange of a private company and a nearby tailoring shop were badly destroyed in a fire which broke out in the exchange in local tehsil bazaar on Wednesday afternoon. The cause of the fire could not be ascertained yet.

Phillaur
Lineman electrocuted
: A lineman of Powercom, Satnam Singh, was electrocuted at nearby Masani village today. He was working on a power transformer to repair the electric lines. He was rushed to the Phillaur Civil Hospital where he was declared brought dead. The body of the deceased was handed over to the family members after conducting a post-mortem examination.

Woman commits suicide: A migrant woman from Uttar Pradesh, Sunita Rani, reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in Mohalla Kohlian in Noormahal last night. Mental depression is said to be the cause of the suicide, the police said.

Course: A vocational skill course concluded at Government Middle School, Sector 46-D, on Wednesday. Around 25 girls learnt hand embroidery during the course. Chanchal Singh, DEO, education department, gave away certificates to students.

Appointed: Human rights lawyer Arvind Thakur has been appointed member of the Board of Studies in Human Rights and Duties in the Department of Sociology, Panjab University. The appointment has been made till March 31, 2011.

PU admission: The last date for submission of application forms for admission to various courses in Panjab University, teaching departments and regional centres, which is July 1 is extended to July 5.

MBA entrance: Panjab University will hold entrance test for MBA (off campus) on July 4. Admit cards (roll numbers) to all the candidates have been dispatched by registered post on June 28. However, those students who don’t receive their admit cards, may get their duplicate admit cards from the CET Cell on July 3.

IGNOU exam: Term end examinations for IGNOU ended at Lajpat Bhawan here on Tuesday. The practical exam for IGNOU's BCA and MCA will be conducted at DAV College, Sector 10, and will commence from July 12. Last date for submission of application forms for admission in various undergraduate programmes has been extended till July 31.

Shopkeeper gets security:
A local shopkeeper has been provided police security after he received a letter demanding ransom from him. The victim, who runs a kulfi shop near the local Shiv Chowk, had informed the police that he received the letter on June 21 in which the sender had asked him to pay Rs 3 lakh at a disclosed destination.

Ultra supporter arrested:
The security forces nabbed an overground worker of the militants from the Saranwa area of Kishtwar district on Tuesday. A joint column of Rashtriya Rifles and the police apprehended Mohammed Sharief of Saranwa, said an official release. — TNS
