602 join Indian Army as officers
Dehradun, June 12 Out of the 602 newly commissioned officers, 126 are from the regular course, including direct entry (121), ex-NDA (242) and ex-Acc (45). The rest are from 109 TGS* (50), 18 UES* (52), 24 SCO* (16) and 15 TES* (76). Gen Joginder Jaswant Singh (retd), Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, presided over the passing-out parade as the reviewing officer. In his address to the spring term 2010 batch, he recalled, “Fortysix years back, I was eagerly waiting to join as an officer like you today. My journey in the Army has been momentous. I wish that one day you will also stand at this place to review a passing-out parade of a batch of the IMA”. He motivated the GCs to be the best commanding officer of their respective units. “In my career as an Army officer, I have been conventional and unpredictable. I never followed ‘bhed chaal’.”
“I congratulate you as from today, you are also going to become brother officers. The moment you put on the rank badges on your shoulders, you shall have committed yourselves to execute the national policy of our ideals of truth, justice and equality,” added Gen Joginder Jaswant Singh. Earlier in the morning, the passing-out parade began at about 6:30 with the sound of bugles. It indicted to the sarit majors to take their positions on the drill square. They were joined by the GCs who elegantly marched on to the drill square. They marched on the tunes of “Col Bogey” and “Sare Jahan Se Achcha”. The GCs then saluted the symbol of the IMA. This was followed by Lt-Gen Rajinder Singh Sujlana, Commandant, IMA, entering from the main gate on a buggy. He was then joined by reviewing officer Gen JJ Singh who came on well-decorated Patiala coach. After taking the salute of the GCs, Gen JJ Singh, along with the IMA Commandant, reviewed the parade on a glittering jeep. The reviewing officer addressed the GCs and inspected a guard of honour given by the GCs. The GCs finally marched into the Chetwode Hall to cross the ‘Antim Pagh’ to start a new and challenging life in the Indian Army. As they were marching into the hall, three helicopters showered petals welcoming the newly commissioned officers. Later, five helicopters with the flag of the IMA and the Indian Army passed over the IMA campus. The passing-out parade was witnessed by military and civil dignitaries, family members, relatives and friends of the newly commissioned officers. Meanwhile, the piping and oath ceremony were held after a breakfast break. These were proud moments for the parents of the newly commissioned officers. The parents of the officers pinned the stars on their wards’ shoulders. Religious teachers gave a sermon to the new officers and later were administered the oath. As the ceremony concluded, the newly commissioned officers in ecstasy tossed their caps in the air and hugged each other to bid adieu to the IMA. |
Manekshaw inspired me, says Sword of Honour winner
Dehradun, June 12 “I have been doing well both in sports and academics and that is what has helped me emerge as the overall best,” he said in a hoarse voice after having commanded his company during the passing-out parade. He regularly participates in sports events like basketball, mountaineering and cross-country. It was Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw who inspired him to join the Army. “I read about him and he has really been an inspiration for me,” the newly commissioned officer said. The 22-year-old lad, however, admitted that at such a young age, it would be challenging to command the troops. “I am just 22. In the Army, there will be personnel with experience of 22 years and more and they will work under me. One officer will have about 800 persons under him,” Hridaya smiled. He comes from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh and his native state is Bihar. His father works as a manager in a dairy firm and his mother is a housewife. Gentleman cadet Sumit S Lahane was bestowed the gold medal for standing first in the overall order of merit. Raring to go to face any challenge, the confident newly commissioned officer from Uttar Pradesh said, “I wish that I get a posting to a place like Jammu and Kashmir where the country requires me the most.” “I am very happy and want that others should get inspiration from me and join the Army in large numbers,” he added. GC Yogendera Kathayat was the bronze medallist. |
‘Maoists biggest internal security threat’
Dehradun, June 12 On the issue of insurgency in the India-China border areas, he gave an evasive reply. “The two countries have great civilisations and good relations. If any issue crops up between the two, they will sort it out amicably.” On several incidents, including corruption, ruining the Army’s image, he replied, “The Indian Army is a disciplined force and anybody found guilty is not spared. We are over 12 lakh in number and people of the nation have immense faith in us. Some black sheep cannot change our image.” |

Foreign cadets take away fond memories
Dehradun, June 12 “We were selected by our country and sent for training in India. But little did we know about the great training here. Due to the IMA, we realised what we had dreamt of once,” said Dilshod Burkhanov of Tajikistan. “Everything was new for us and it was a real learning experience here. We learnt swimming, riding and other things,” he added. Another gentleman cadet Sohib Turkulov of Tajikistan said he would never forget his experiences here. “The training here is more advanced than what our country has,” he said. “Cadets of six countries were here and we got to learn a lot from one another’s culture and language. Though we mostly communicated in English, we have also learnt a bit of other languages like Hindi. Namaste!” greeted a cadet from Sri Lanka. |

Ambitious plan for Doon goes haywire
Seema Sharma Tribune News Service
Dehradun, June 12 The city, which has been developing haphazardly in the absence of a master plan, is in the thick of drainage blunders. Quite ironically, the state government, which announced its ambitious plan to evolve a foolproof drainage system for the developed as well as underdeveloped areas of the city and hired services of a private agency, ENC, which is based in Delhi, for the purpose a year ago, has lost track of it. The agency that prepared the plan, “Storm Water Drainage System”, costing Rs 411 crore and taking a cue from the original master plan prepared by Consulting Engineering Services, has been waiting for state government to approve its detailed project report since November last year. It has been paid the DPR amount of Rs 52 lakh till now. Executive Engineer of the Water Works Department SC Pant, which is also engaged in preparing the blue print of the project, says: “Had the state government acted timely on the DPR, the estimate could have been sent to the Central government under JNNRUM-I and the work would have started in time. But, now it is already late for phase I, therefore we are eyeing for phase II only”. The delay will further escalate the cost of the project. B Dutta, Chief Executive Officer of the ENC agency, said: “The cost of building material is increasing day by day. The delay in the project execution would raise the estimate of the project. This may lead to the state government to abandon the project altogether. Therefore, it is better that the state government must expedite work on this plan”. The apathy of the state government becomes apparent from this fact also that it did not think it necessary to make agency and the Waterworks Department clear as to where this project would be finally placed at. “We don’t know till now whether the project will be considered under the JNNRUM plan or the 13th Financial Commission. We have put forth this matter at umpteen meetings and paper correspondence with all departments involved such as the Dehradun Municipal Corporation and Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authorities but got no reply till date. Though it is more likely to be considered under the JNNRUM scheme, the state government should make its point on the subject,” said Pant. While clearing DMC’s position on the matter, Mayor Vinod Chamoli said: “It is either the state government or the Water Works Department, a government body which is assisting in the project, should pay the DPR amount and forward it to the Central government for clearing the estimate. The DMC at this stage has nothing to do with it”. On the matter of escalation of project cost with the delay, he said: “The cost has already been revised during the preparation stage only. It is true, the way state government is dragging its feet on it, the cost may spiral up beyond its capacity”. He expressed hope that the project may see light in the phase II of JNNRUM. For the time being, he said the DMC would continue to do patchwork on drainage-related problems. (To be continued) |
Fill posts in higher education institutes, Alva writes to CM
Nainital, June 12 In an informal interaction with mediapersons at the Raj Bhawan here on today afternoon, Alva revealed her intention to pay surprise visits to colleges in the state being run from tin sheds. She expressed concern over the large number of such government institutes operating in pitiable conditions that had been reported in the media. She expressed worry over a large number of students going to places like Delhi and Bangalore to pursue higher education in the absence of proper facilities in government-run institutes in the state. Referring to the large number of private colleges and universities that have sprung up in the state, Alva disclosed that the institutes that had not been accorded recognition from the Chancellor’s office had been notified on the website for public knowledge so that students studying there and their parents were not taken for a ride by such institutes. She also said the
recommendations coming out of the two-day meet on hill agriculture hosted by her recently were set to come out as the Nainital Declaration on Hill Agriculture 2010. The meeting was a part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Gobind
Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology at Pantnagar. The declaration is being got printed by the university. Alva said the declaration would be forwarded to an expert group led by eminent agriculture scientist MS Swaminathan for
study and a future roadmap which in turn would then be given to the state government for taking short and long-term policy measures. She also deliberated on the restoration works being done at the
Raj Bhawan to restore the heritage property to its old glory. Alva is taking a deep personal interest in the matter. Amongst the new attractions that will come up
at the Raj Bhawan soon are an enclosed swimming pool with solar heating and terraced gardens with the best collection of flowers from across the globe that will be tended by professional gardeners. One of the major attractions of these gardens will be the rare orchids of Uttarakhand. |
Cable Operators-Sports Channel Dispute Yamini Sunwar Tribune News Service
Dehradun, June 12 This is benefiting dealers of satellite dish television. Owner of BSN cable operator Navin Gupta said, “The broadcast of the football match has been barred due to the clash between us and the channel. At the time of the FIFA World Cup 2010, the channel had started blackmailing us by asking for a growth of about 25 per cent in the payment of their monthly package. This is not agreeable”. “Though we had a meeting today with the sports channel, nothing has been finalised yet. They have lowered their growth percentage of the monthly package, but are expected to settle the dispute in the second meeting tomorrow. But till then, the matches will not be aired in the city,” asserted Gupta. Apart from incongruity, football enthusiasts in the Doon valley are trying their level best to wrap up work and head towards home before 7 in the evening as they do not want to miss a single match. They don’t mind it even if they have to shell out a thousand bucks to buy a brand new television. FIFA has ignited a spark of zest and gusto among the youth in Dehradun. Most of the fans are rushing to markets for buying digital television service. Conceivably, the digital dish television sets have become popular among Doonites in a very short span due to the discrepancies in the telecast from city cable operators. With a quarrel among the three major cable operators of the city, Blue Sky Network (BSN), Uttaranchal Cable Network (UCN) and New Prime Cable Network (UPCN) and the channel telecasting the sport, it has left the common public into a quandary. Customers are mostly opting for the dish TV for congestion-free viewing and convenience. Rajeev Naithani, 32-year-old businessman, who runs a sari shop at Moti Bazar, has bought an LCD television along with the Direct To Home (DTH) service of Reliance Big TV for his shop. “I am a football fan and used to play during my college days. I have taken the DTH subscription as I have to stay at the shop till 9 pm and cannot miss out the soccer games. The reason for not opting for the local cable operator is the time discrepancies in the sports channel. It also helps me in avoiding clashes with other programmes my family watches around the same at home,” quips Naithani. Shishir Prashant, a journalist, tries to reach home before 7 pm as he does not want to miss a single match. But he is disheartened that the telecast of the FIFA World Cup has been barred in the city. Perhaps, the grand universal event of soccer had raked a hefty amount for dealers of satellite television than dealers of television. Like IPL matches, the football world cup has witnessed a sheer increase of around 25 per cent to 45 per cent in the respective sector. The influx of various schemes and packages of satellite dish televisions shows the popularity of the game and demand of the public. Chaman Gupta of Gupta Electronics, however, gave a different statement. He said his shop had not witnessed any hike in the sale of subscription for digital television or in its recharge processing. It was normal as usual, but customers complain of facing trouble while recharging their account due to the over loading on the server. Daksha, a young football fan who hails from Ambala, who has come here to take admission in one of the technical colleges, is a gizmo freak. “After passing out from school, my father has gifted me an advanced IT enabled mobile phone. I am happy that throughout the FIFA games I can watch the football match at any hour,” said Daksha. |

The felicitation programme was attended by common villagers and VIPs like State Information Commissioner RS Toliya and leaders of various political parties, along with the senior members of the Shauka community. Rina, who works with National Outdoor Leadership School in the USA, said she developed interest in mountaineering due to inspiration from her father, who was an Indian Army officer. |
