BMC Chowk Flyover Project
NGO points out major flaws
Tribune News Service

‘Blunder’full

  • Only 20 pc commuters will benefit
  • Width of a road, which would join the flyover from the Namdev Chowk side, just 18 feet, which is too narrow given the increasing volume of traffic
  • Existing road width of the Mahavir Marg and bus stand road 40 feet, but most of it would get covered with piles and other structures of the flyover, creating further pressure
  • Construction was also flouting the provisions being laid down by the Jalandhar Development Authority in the master plan which stressed that flyovers over Rama Mandi and PAP Chowk should be given priority than this one

Jalandhar, June 3
A local NGO today raised its voice over the of the BMC Chowk flyover, the construction of which had started about two months back. Representatives of Sahara Youth India claimed that the project, coming up for Rs 20 crore, would benefit only 20 per cent of commuters crossing the BMC Chowk.

He said the remaining 80 per cent would still have to cross from underneath it, bearing the increasing pressure of traffic jams daily.

Further finding faults with the design, Chairman of the NGO Ajay Palta claimed that the width of a road, which would join the flyover from the Namdev Chowk side, would be just 18 feet, which was too narrow given the increasing volume of traffic.

“What would be the fun of spending such a huge amount if people would be stuck in jams again?” he asked, claiming that those involved in the design were proceeding without any vision in this regard.

Palta claimed that the existing road width of the Mahavir Marg and bus stand road, crisscrossing from the chowk, was 40 feet but most of it would get covered with piles and other structures of the flyover, creating further pressure on the 80 per cent commuters passing beneath it.

Palta expressed his concern saying that a spacious intersection was being reduced to a congested one, which most people would dread crossing. He said that the construction was also flouting the provisions being laid down by the Jalandhar Development Authority in the master plan which stressed that flyovers over Rama Mandi and PAP Chowk should be given priority than this one.

He also claimed that an underpass would have been a better option keeping in view low cost, better ambience, less resistance from nearby stakeholders and faster execution. He said he had sought a detailed reply on this from the JIT but he had rather found that even the basic information was being concealed.

Drain trouble

Jalandhar, June 3
Thanks to the apathy of the Department of Rural Development, 100 families in Bakhunangal village are forced to live in a virtual cesspool on account of overflowing drains.

Residents of the locality alleged that the ‘case clearance files’ granting permission to convert forest land to non-forest category for laying the pipes was shuttling between the departments concerned for the past six months.

Though an amount of Rs 5 lakh was released by the department nearly two years back, the open drains in the locality are overflowing thus forcing the residents to live under looming threat of water borne diseases.

“We were promised that sewer lines would be connected to village pond. However, even after a year, the authorities have failed to even lay the pipes. Water channels in our kitchens and bathrooms remained choked,” said a villager.

“We have met the Deputy Commissioner and other authorities but to no avail. Do mega projects in cities and across highways also encounter such long delays? Delay is just because we live in a village and we have no political say,” rued another resident.

As per sources, the Forest Department had objected laying down of sewer pipes in land, which falls under its jurisdiction, in November last year. To avail permission to continue the work, the case was sent to forest authorities to convert land into “non-forest land” category in December. However, owing to some technical shortcomings, the forest authorities rejected permission on February 24 and then again on March 12 for the second time.

“We have sent the case to the Forest Department for the third time. Case has to be cleared by the higher forest authorities. We cannot start work until we get clearance from them,” said an officer.

Owing to the uncertain delay, an additional amount of Rs 1 lakh, which was released as NREGA fund to accomplish the project nearly one year back, was also re-deposited to the accounts of department.

Kotak Mahindra Bank told to pay up for deficient service
Deepkamal Kaur
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, June 3
The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has ordered Kotak Mahindra Bank to pay up losses worth Rs 4.76 lakh and Rs 15,000 as compensation to its client. In his complaint, Surinder Kumar Modi, a resident of Nakodar, said he had an account in the bank at Nakodar.

He said he was having a gold debit card of the bank with the facility of daily withdrawal and purchase limit of Rs 1.75 lakh. He said the card was issued with the facility of international operations and for use in all major countries and all known banks.

He said in August 25, 2008, he used the ATM of Llyods Bank at South Hall, London, for withdrawal of money. But no money was remitted from the ATM.

However, the card remained in the machine after which he rushed to the Lloyds Bank officials, who advised him to get the card and funds blocked.

The complainant said he was assured that his card would be immediately blocked and no one will be able to withdraw money. On August 27, 2008, he said he switched on his Indian mobile. He said he was shocked to receive SMS that his balance was only Rs 307, especially because before retention of his card, his balance was Rs 4,76,500.

Modi alleged that due to deficiency in service of the bank in failing to block his card, he suffered a huge monetary loss. He said he had even lodged a complaint in this regard with the Metropolitan Police, South Hall. He said he had to pre-pone his trip and return back to India on September 2, 2008.

Manager of the bank in Goraya said the complainant had simply informed that his card had been retained by the machine and never lodged any request for blocking of his debit card. He said he was told that blocking of his card would cause him unnecessary harassment during his stay abroad and since his password was secure and nobody knew it, it could not be misused.

However, on inquiry it was found that the card was used more than 20 times between August 25, 2008 to August 27, 2008 at different locations and as such his complaint of card getting retained by machine was frivolous.

The complainant, however, produced documents regarding insurance which read, “The card has in-built insurance benefits. Not only do you have a zero liability for all charges after reporting loss of your card, your card also provides you purchase protection”.

Regarding password security, the complainant contested producing a letter written by the manager of the Nakodar branch bank in which it was admitted that the ATM pin was intimated to him through SMS by the service manager of the bank, owing to which it was not secret.

He even produced an extract of a write up on how ATM card hacking proving how a team of organised criminals used a skimmer for copying cards and recording PIN numbers to withdraw money from many accounts in a very short time directly from bank ATM.

The commission upheld a decision taken pertaining to the case in the district forum. It entitled him for Rs 4.76 lakh and Rs 15,000 as compensation.

Making of a confident child
Namita Kandhola

A loving and a caring parent would always want his child to build up confidence and self-esteem. Self-confidence is important to achieve success. Children are sensitive and need encouragement to learn. They need the support from parents and adults to grow up well balanced.

There are many ways that you can help your child gain the confidence that they need to function well in today’s society. They need to be able to stand up for themselves, speak up and say what’s on their mind and most importantly, they need to be able to ask for help when they need to.

The foundation of self-esteem is laid early in life when infants develop attachments with the adults who are responsible for them. Children come to feel loved and accepted by the people they look up to. The toddler years are time for exploration. They want to explore the environment around him. Cheer on your toddler as he tries new skills. Snubbing your child by repeatedly saying ‘no’ to him would mean lowering his self- confidence. When the child learns to speak, listen to him patiently and respond so that he comes to know what he says is important. When they accomplish simple tasks given to them, they feel an extreme sense of satisfaction. When they are complimented, they know they are capable of doing tasks.

As a parent, it is our responsibility to motivate our child and help them build up self-confidence. Children with higher level of self-confidence are more independent, responsible and can make good decisions in life. They will try harder, be happier and have greater self-respect. They will make friends easily and will be more giving. Kids with low self-esteem may not want to try new things and may exhibit a low tolerance for frustration. Parents termed as ‘helicopter parents’ usually have children with low confidence. These parents are over-protective and are constantly involved in their children.

Important ways

  • LOVE- The foremost thing we can do to build a higher level of confidence in our children is to love them. A child who is getting unconditional love from the parents stands the best chance of growing up with a healthy self-esteem.
  • ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TRY OUT NEW THINGS- Give your child time and space to try out something and let them learn from their mistakes. When your child faces a difficult situation, be there as a support. Guide him and encourage him to accomplish his task. Let him discover his own path and confidence to deal with life in an independent way.
  • ACCEPT YOUR CHILD FOR WHO HE IS- Children must feel appreciated and valued. Believe in your child and show them they are worthwhile.
  • PRAISE YOUR CHILD OFTEN- Whenever your child does something good, compliment him. Advise him if the child does something wrong. Criticising the child will not produce positive behaviour. Praise does.
  • GIVE THEM THE PERFECT ROLE MODEL- Children get influenced by the behaviour of their parents. Act as a role model to give them the right example. They gain skills by hearing parents express their own self-confidence.

Parents can play a vital role in strengthening child’s self-esteem by treating them respectfully, taking their views and opinions seriously and appreciating them. Above all, parents must keep in mind that self-esteem is an important part of every child’s development.

Phagwara, June 3
Neither the Senior Vice-President nor the Junior Vice-President of the Phagwara Nagar Council could be elected even after 11 months of the expiry of the terms of the two Vice-Presidents Sarabjit Kaur and Sita Kaul, who were elected Senior and Junior Vice-Presidents of the council on July 23, 2008, for a term of one year, which expired on July 22 last year.

Ongoing factionalism within the ruling parties in the Phagwara Nagar Council is said to be the cause of delay in the elections. The Tribune has learnt that Markfed Chairman and Senior SAD Leader Jarnail Singh Wahid Advocate, who had returned from a long tour of Canada and USA recently, met Technical Education Minister Swarana Ram yesterday in Chandigarh to resolve the tangle, for an amicable solution to reach a unanimous decision.

Both SAD and BJP adopt different political paths on the issue. But keeping in mind the importance of unanimity, the nagar council will hold a meet probably on June 7.
