Grading system respite for average students
Tribune News Service

Dehradun May 28
The Class X CBSE results was one more feather in the cap that matched up with Class XII students in the Doon Valley. Rejoicing students and smiling faces symbolised the successful initiative of the Certificate Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) today, when Class X results were declared. The new grading pattern under the norms of for Class X board examination, have given respite to several average students that were quite apprehensive with the good results in the examinations, earlier. The students have done exceptionally well and have brought laurels to their credit.

The scores, which were earlier considered in the terms of percentage, have converted into points up to 10 and grading in terms of A1, B1 and so on.

Jayjit Guha, student of Scholars’ Home has scored 9.6 points in his Class X boards. “I was focused to do well in the examination without the peer pressure of scoring more than 95 per cent. Even my parents and teachers relieved us from following the rat race. I was determined and have made my mind to excel in my endeavours. Though, I am happy with my results but somewhere I am not satisfied with the grading system due to which none of us can decipher who has scored how much, said Jayjit, who now wants to opt for science with PCM (Physics-Chemistry-Maths) stream.

“With a vision to decrease the increasing level of stress as well fear due to board exams, the CBSE on a consensus basis has come with a reliable system of school-based evaluation. The evaluation pertains to a holistic assessment of a leaner, which also includes co-scholastic area of life skills, attitudes and values, sports and games as well as co-curricular activities, ” said SK Tripathi, senior teacher at the Kendriya Vidhyalaya 1.

The students of Doon International School, Jaswant Modern School, DAV Public School, Doon Global School, Kendriya Vidhyalaya, Children’s Academy, Scholars Home, Welham Boys and many other CBSE affiliated schools have scored exceptionally well in class X examination.

Surbhi Pathak and Divyang Singhal of Children’s Academy secured 10 points while Romi Adarsh, Siddhant Uniyal, Sakshi Kamboj and Malvee Singla from Scholars Home School have secured 10 points in their Class X CBSE examination.

”The grading system for the students of Class X are been determined with the vision of students becoming self-critical where they can analyse things in a much better perspective. The dropout rates are reduced and a holistic development in terms of a true sense is achieved. Earlier, where students used to focus on studies in the last days, had now concentrated on the qualitative studies without fearing of scoring 90 per cent or above. The new pattern has reduced the pressure on the students while maintaining the continuity in academics as well in co-scholastic areas for productive results,” said Chhaya Khanna, Principal of Scholars Home School.

More results of other schools: Scholars Home- Sughanda Gupta 9.8, Vaibhav Bisht 9.8, Shubham Khokar 9.8, Aditi Kumar 9.8, Gaurika Bubber 9.8 and Himanshu Sharma 9.8 Doon Global School- Raushan Kumar 9.2, Mona Kukreti 9.2, Siddhartha Bansal 9, Richa Dogra 8.8, Astha Manwal 8.8 and Swati Kukriyal 8.8 Kendriya Vidhyalaya 1- Manjeet 9.6, Chetna 9.6 and Balwant 9.2 Doon International School- Ashutosh 9.8, Anuradha 9.8 and Shivam 9.8 Children’s Academy- Shubham Goyal 9.6, Siddharth Rawat 9.4, Sumit Kantwal 9.2 and Gopu Abhinaya Priyanka 9.2 Jaswant Modern-Sneha Joshi 8.8, Fareed 8.8, Imran Khan 8.8, Parul Pal 8.8, Karan 8.6, Pankaj Rawat 8.6, Sukanya 8.6 and Astha Singhal 8.4

Mixed reaction to new system
Sandeep Rawat
Tribune News Service

Haridwar May 287
With the Central Board of Secondary Examination grading system known as Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) being imposed for the first time, instead of the traditional marking system, mixed reactions have been registered from students, teachers and parents over the over all system.

While some have appreciated the new form of students’ performance test criteria many seemed to be opposing this format.

The Tribune has talked to some of the students, teachers and parents about their view about this new system.

Principal of DAV School PC Purohit welcomed the grading system but also put up the negative concerns it may have on the students’ psychology. He pointed that with new grading system coming into effect the cut-throat competition of number game, parental pressure added with society pressure of comparing performances by percentage and numbers will now ease off, letting students take the examination in a normal way.

But simultaneously Purohit added that it has a negative effect too as motivation level of enhancing one’s performance will be missing from many students.

Countering this Shiv Dale School Principal Kiran Sharma terms the grading system as a landmark in Indian education history and a right step in making change the mindset of parents and society towards students.

“Suicidal tendency for not scoring as per the expectations of the parents, relatives will be a thing of past with CGPA. Now, focus will be more on gaining complete knowledge than on the ways to score more,” stated Sharma.

Jaya Adlakha former Girls College Union president and now an IAS aspirant opines that grading system will be detrimental to the competition at grassroots level and exact standing of student will not be known and so how and where to improve remains a question of concern.

“In this era of intense competition every single mark can make or break your destiny and here at least the hidden marks difference is huge and unknown too,” said Jaya.

Finally, a take on from topper, Shaivya Rastogi, who topped Haridwar district from DPS Ranipur in Class XII with 95 pc said had CGPA been there may be she would have focused more on engineering entrance exams as now one doesn’t know exactly how much one has scored. “We jostled for each and every mark as we knew this could be the difference in rankings, the number system gave us motivation to perform harder but with grade system you are best among equals!” said.

Addressing mediapersons on the sidelines of the National Executive Council at Col Brown School in Dehradun, ABVP national secretary Ravi Kumar said the meet has sought a strong check on commercialisation of education in the country.

“Even the students studying in these minority institutions have grievances that can be solved through these tribunals,” Payal Mango pointed out.

Earlier, at the deliberations in the conclave today, the speakers criticised the UPA government minority appeasement policy.
