Phagwara
LPG connection
: More than 500 residents of several villages including Baddon, Panchhat, Mio-Patti, Ajnoha and Pajourra have submitted a memorandum to Phagwara SDM Amarjit Pal urging not to transfer their LPG connection from Phagwara to a new gas agency being opened in nearby village Rihana Jattan. The SDM has assured them for early required action.

Debt-ridden youth kills self

Hoshiarpur: Trapped in debt, 21-year-old Rakesh Kumar of Hardokhanpur village ended his life by consuming celphos. According to the police sources, in his blind quest for greener pasture in foreign countries, Rakesh Kumar went to Dubai about a month ago by raising a loan. But he could not succeed in his mission and returned 3 days ago. He was mentally upset over the debt trap following which he swallowed celphos. He was taken to Civil Hospital where he breathed his last. — OC

Medical camp

Pathankot: A free medical check-up camp was organised by Black Arrow Brigade at Mamun Cantonment. More than 300 patients were examined at the camp and free medicines were distributed among the patients. — OC

Girl abducted: A girl of Nahra village was abducted at pistol point allegedly by one Sushil of Narela on Tuesday on the outskirts of the village. On the complaint of the girl’s father, a case has been registered at Kundli police station against the accused. He also alleged that the accused had called him up over phone on Monday asking to marry his daughter to him. When his proposal was rejected, the accused threatened the victim’s father with dire consequences.

: Muhammad Islam, accused in a theft case and lodged at the Mandi jail, today gave a slip to two constableses and escaped from police custody from the Indira Gandhi Medical College where he had been brought for treatment.

Cop killed in mishap
: A policeman, Ramesh Singh, was killed in a road accident at Talab Tillo when he was going to perform rituals for his deceased father at Kud in Doda district today. He was posted at the Pargwal police post as a head clerk and had taken leave for two days to go to his house. The police said a private bus hit his scooter, killing him on the spot. His wife and daughter were injured in the accident. However, the bus driver escaped.

Armyman dies: An Army jawan, Lok Parkash (25) died today due to head injury after felling on a stone, after he lost his balance at the Jourian area in Akhnoor, the police said. Lok Parkash, a resident of Patna in Bihar, working with 4 Rashtriya Rifles, lost his life while he was participating in a map-reading course of the Army. The body had been sent for postmortem examination to a hospital in Akhnoor, the police added.

Summer vacation
:The government today ordered that all educational institutions, including the recognised private schools up to higher secondary-level, falling in the summer zone of the Jammu division would observe 55-day summer vacations from June 1 to July 25. It has been ordered that the educational institutions of winter zones falling in the Jammu division would observe five-day summer vacations from June 1 to June 5. Any default on part of the private schools in observance of the calendar of vacations shall attract action under the rules.
