SGPC-run hospital runs into controversy
Amritsar, May 15 The hospital management, however, has denied the allegations. It maintained that the complainants have lodged a bogus complaint on the basis of a fake Nevertheless, Vijay Kumari, a 50-year-old woman, who underwent an operation for removing stones in the gall bladder at the hospital in December last, died last night due to infection caused by a bandage pack, which as per the family members, was left in the stomach of the patient during the operation. Deepak Kumar, son of the patient, alleged that her mother had developed post-operation complications like high grade fever and constant pain in the stomach. “After the pain became unbearable, we approached another hospital to get her examined,” he said. After undergoing an ultrasound test, it was found that a piece of cloth had been lying inside the body, leading to reported Septiciemia infection which had spread in the blood, he further alleged. This had resulted in a constant pain and had reportedly ended up damaging multiple organs. “I took my mother to Amritsar hospital on the Sultanwind Road. After a bandage-like cloth was found lying in the stomach of my mother, we asked the doctors to re-operate her. On our insistence, the doctors agreed to re-operate upon the patient to take out the bandage pack but recommended us to shift her to some other well-equipped hospital,” said Deepak. The patient remained there for about a month but succumbed to her illness last night. Dr AP Singh, OSD to Guru Ram Dass Hospital, said the ultrasound report, on the basis of which complaint has been lodged, was not of the same patient. “The report under question, actually, belongs to some other patient by the name of Raj Rani, who would have been suffering from food pipe obstructing problem,” he said. The hospital management maintained that before readmitting, the patient had already undergone an operation from some other hospital. “The patient was firstly, operated upon for removing gall bladder stones, but when she was readmitted, she was diagnosed as suffering from biliary peritonitis. Leaving nothing to chance, the patient was re-operated two times for curing this problem, but could not survive post operations. Her death occurred absolutely for the problem which she developed after three months. No negligence was done, as alleged,” said Dr AP Singh. Meanwhile, inquiry officer ASI Manjit Singh with the Vallah police post told a case under Section 304-A of the IPC has been registered with the Police Station, Division A, Vallah, against the alleged the doctor and further investigation was on. |

Association splits; Punjab Chemists Federation formed
Jalandhar, May 15 There are approximately 25,000 registered chemists in Punjab and the split has come due to the alleged autocratic functioning of the executive of the association and their patronage to those who are involved in the sale of spurious and habit-forming drugs, said Harish Sethi, president of the federation. Federation secretary V.P. Dogra justified the tightening of noose around chemists by the Health Department. He said the federation would work hand in hand with the department to discourage sale of spurious and prohibited drugs. Organising secretary Yogesh Mahajan said wards of pharmacists should be allowed to run their parental chemists shops after their death. He said children who had worked in a chemists shop with their parents for more than 10 years should be granted permission to run shops after clearing a short-duration course. |
