Retired policeman turns craftsman

Dehradun, May 2
Uttarakhand is becoming a new destination for the handicrafts lovers. Beautiful craftswork made out of bamboo fibre, bhanga, bichhu grass, simmal, jute are easily available here at very reasonable prices. Traditional handicrafts made by locals here are high in demand at the trade fairs.

Uttarakhand has also developed a taste for bamboo handicrafts as these are affordable, beautiful and easily available. Chiks made from bamboo fibre are now extensively used in commercial and private properties for their cooling effect as these give respite from scorching heat if kept wet.

Manohar Singh, an ex-policeman from Punjab police, has turned into a craftsman and is selling bamboo chik mats on the Rajpur Road since four years. His refined embroidery and handwork on the bamboo items such as wall hangings, tablemats, curtains, blinds etc are attracting one and all.

Manohar, who is basically from Jalandhar, Punjab, has four children, but none of them looks after him in his old age. After retirement, he earns his living by making bamboo handicraft.

“My bamboo crafts are certainly getting popular as these look beautiful and add an earthy look to the area. Table mats and blinds are very much in demand and all items are nominally priced between Rs 40 and Rs 500,” said Singh.

He is a great preserver of cultural and customary bamboo craftworks. He is also supplying the goods to other cities like Roorkee, Meerut, Saharanpur and Muzaffarnagar. These chik mats are also available in embroidered, sheesha work and beads work.

The raw material i.e. bamboo, is firstly dried up and then as per desire is moulded into various forms, ending with varnishing to be sold in the markets. Further, these thin strands of bamboo are woven to make chik mats, blinds and curtains.

“I am glad that people recognise my work and purchase items made by me. Moreover, besides quality another reason for demand of bamboo handicrafts is its sturdiness without much maintenance and care,” said an elated Manohar.

Mussoorie, May 2
The construction work at the MDDA parking has angered residents of Landour Bazar. The construction work in the peak season has led to blocking of the South Road stalling the flow of traffic and creating chaotic scenes and frequent traffic jams causing immense trouble to tourists bound for Dhanolti.

The directions of the District Magistrate and the Chief Secretary to complete all works before April 30 have also not been heeded by the MDDA.

The residents are of the view that there was no need to begin construction work in this month as it will jeopardise traffic flow in the already congested market.

Police station in charge MC Joshi was also of the view that the closure of the South Road will make the one-way traffic rule go haywire and lead to uncontrollable traffic situation in the area.

The road to Landour is also in a dilapidated condition with huge potholes and left incomplete by the Jal Sansthan a few months back due to which many have met with accidents.

According to Jal Sansthan AE PB Bhatt the potholes will be filled within a few days and no scar will be left whatsoever.
