Water needs: Master plan throws light on conservation
Jalandhar, May 1 It is estimated that while there are 320 tubewells installed in the city, there would be a demand for 187 more in another 20 years going by the facts that there is a need of a tubewell for a population of 5,000 persons.
Metered supply
Considering the facts, the officials of the town planning department and Jalandhar Development Authority have given some good suggestions for conservation of water. The topmost in the list is meterisation of water supply. While the supply in commercial areas is metered, the one in residential areas covering less than 500 sq yards is fixed according to the size of the plots.
Restricted tap supply
Estimating that 60 per cent of the total water supplied by taps goes waste due to negligence of public, it has been suggested that the supply be restricted to limited hours just twice a day. The MC has just done that since the past week by curtailing the afternoon time supply. It is believed that people tend to use stored water with care.
Recycling plant
It has also been suggested that the water supply in new areas should incorporate separate lines, one for washing, water coolers and garden taps and the second for supplying potable water. Recommending the setting up of a waste water recycling plant, it has been said that this treated water should be supplied through the line meant for non-drinking purposes.
Rainwater harvesting
It has been recommended that all new flyovers and bridges should have a provision of rainwater harvesting. A suggestion for using porous paving tiles for pavements and soft parking areas has also been given so as to increase the sub surface soil water through seepage of rain water. |
