Mela cops end Kumbh duty with ‘peshwayi’
Haridwar, April 30
Putting aside differences over rank and home state, thousands of police personnel took a dip in Ganga river just two days after the Maha Kumbh officially got over. As the akhada Peshwayis were dominated by a saffron hue, the police Peshwayi today was coloured in khaki. As many as 20,000-odd mela police personnel had performed Kumbh duty in the four months of the Maha Kumbh. The police Peshwayi was led by mela police chief Deputy Inspector General Alok Sharma duly assisted by Senior Superintendent of Kumbh police Ajay Rautela. The enthusiasm and passion of the police personnel for the Peshwayi and the bath was no less than the akhadas and communities which had taken out peshwayis earlier. Like Naga sadhus, some police personnel applied ash (bhasms) on their bodies and many danced to bhangra beats. The cops, who were spread out over the 130 sq km Kumbh area from January, today converged at one point. And, no security forces were required to manage them. Women police personnel also participated in today’s bath, performed rituals and were seen in a relaxed mood. “It is a satisfying experience and an experience of a lifetime to manage the Maha Kumbh in Haridwar. After the successful completion of the Kumbh, our relaxation can be gauged from the way we are taking part in this bath,” said Deputy Superintendent of Mela police Shweta Chaubey to The Tribune. Mela police personnel have started retreating to their base duty stations. Today’s police bath brings curtains down over their Kumbh duty. Later in the evening, a mass dinner was hosted by DIG mela police for the mela police personnel, district officials as well as media personnel. |
Cabinet fails to notice garbage heap
Haridwar, April 30 To camouflage this from the eyes of Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and his 12-minister team, the mela health personnel put lime and sprayed flowers over the garbage. No high-ranking official took note of this and the cabinet meeting went on after the ministers had taken a dip in the Ganga. Even the Chief Health Officer was seen roaming around the garbage. Many thought that the circle was a design specially made to welcome the cabinet! |
Publicity gimmick, says Harish Rawat
Dehradun, April 30 Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment Harish Rawat today criticised Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank for politicising the Ganga. “It will be detrimental to the prospects of the BJP as the common man has seen everything that the BJP has done during Maha Kumbh.” Speaking exclusively to The Tribune, Harish Rawat, who represents the Haridwar constituency in Parliament, said that the BJP first wrongly utilised the state machinery to welcome BJP leaders during Maha Kumbh while it urged non-BJP ministers to not visit Haridwar during this period. “Chief Minister Nishank violated his norms by utilising the whole state machinery to welcome BJP leaders. President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and I refrained from coming to Haridwar during the baths. He has set a wrong precedent. “Today, he held a cabinet meeting on a Ganga ghat. This is merely a publicity gimmick,”said Harish Rawat. “The BJP has suffered two defeats in parliamentary elections and is in a shambles. The same is going to happen to the state BJP government as by making huge claims of success, one can’t hide the fact that mass corruption has been done during Kumbh,” said Rawat. Meanwhile, activists of the Teerth Maryada Samiti protested at the Birla Ghat in Haridwar where a stampede took place on the April 14 Pramukh Shahi Snan. They lashed out at the state government for holding a meeting on the Ganga ghats while still dozens of persons involved in the stampede are missing. The protesters also criticised Nishank for not paying homage to the victims of the stampede. |

Clearance to Start Session
Dehradun, April 30 The inspection team that arrived in Srinagar yesterday is expected to give its report in the coming few days. Already ticked off by the MCI for failing to fulfil some of the norms, the inspection is crucial for the medical college. However, after the bribery scandal, sources say the MCI’s reputation is at stake and it will in all probability apply stricter inspection norms that will in turn make things harder for the college. It is reliably learnt that Srinagar Medical College has brought in new faculty, upgraded its website and taken some other steps to bring in line with the MCI norms, but how far these steps manage to persuade the MCI authorities in giving the go-ahead remains to be seen. Significantly, the medical college has not been able to attract faculty members and series of resignations have been taking place since the past one year. Insiders say poor scales being paid to the teaching faculty is one of the main reasons for desertion of faculty members. It remains unattractive as other states and union territories manage to pay much more than the state government is paying. In the previous assessment (August 9) too, the institute had faltered on several norms, the major one was inappropriate number of faculty members and bed occupancy. Meanwhile, Principal of the college V Chopra was present today for the inspection that was conducted by three members of the MCI, who had come from Delhi. |
