A move is on to shift Karnataka High Court Chief Justice PD Dinakaran to a HC in the North-East, possibly Sikkim, following his refusal to go on leave heeding the advice of the Supreme Court Collegium.

The contentious Bill, which makes it mandatory for the state government to recruit people from the same district where the posts exist, was passed by the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly today, the last day of the budget session, by a voice vote.

PM: Summit must focus on N-terror

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is expected to caution the international community against the threat of nuclear weapons falling into the hands of terrorist groups when he addresses world leaders from over 40 countries at the Nuclear Security Summit convened by US President Barack Obama in Washington on April 12-13.

‘Corruption a threat to national security’
Chandigarh, April 9
Taking a stern view of corruption in governance and administrative malpractices, Vice-President of India M. Hamid Ansari today observed that national-level schemes like the Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and food provision through the public distribution system were getting diluted because of corruption.

‘Research factories’ a booming industry
Chandigarh, April 9
It is a flourishing industry. “Research factories” are booming across states and in the absence of any effective regulatory apparatus to reign in private university centres, it is a virtual free for all. Last year the University Grants Commission (UGC) banned MPhil and PhDs through the distance education mode, but these centres have obviously defeated the purpose of the ban.
