Pirated CDs
: Rajesh Kumar, alias Sonu, resident of Bhandari Gate, was arrested at a naka at Gandhi Chowk here with 532 pirated CDs on Thursday. Balwinder Singh, SHO of Civil Lines police station, said on Friday that Sonu was arrested on the complaint of an officer of the Indian Music Industries. Sonu was produced in a court on Friday, which remanded him in police custody. 

Fair price shop: The IG (Border Zone), I.P.S. Sahota, inaugurated a fair price shop of consumer items of daily need for police personnel here on Friday. The shop has been started on the premises of Civil Lines police station. D.P. Singh, SSP Batala, Vipan Choudhary, SP (Hq), many other officials of the district accompanied the IG.

Train halt request
: Hoshiarpur MP Santosh Chaudhary has urged Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerji to provide 2-minute halt of Amritsar-Haridwar Jan Shatabdi Express at Phagwara. In a letter written to Banerji today, the MP said it would facilitate residents of Phagwara, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahar and Banga.

MC okays Rs 26.94 cr budget
: The Karnal Municipal Council on Friday approved a budget of Rs 26.94 crore for 2010-2011. Chairman of the Municipal Council Balwinder Singh Kalra disclosed that the income for the year was estimated at Rs 23.55 crore, while expenses on salaries of employees and developmental works like beautification of the city, maintenance and repairs of roads, street lights, sanitation and other basic facilities was pegged at Rs 25.56 crores.

Principal looted
: Some car-borne miscreants looted Rs 10,000, an ATM card and a mobile phone from Davenderpal Singh Tomar, Principal of Government Senior Secondary School, Tijara, in Dharuhera on Thursday. They also withdrew Rs 15,000 from the victim’s account by using the ATM card. The incident took place when Davenderpal sought a lift from the miscreants till Banipur Chowk. Subsequently, Davenderpal filed a complaint, following which the police registered a case of robbery.

Repair of roads
: Deputy Speaker of Vidhan Sabha Akram Khan on Friday directed all administrative officials to complete carpeting and maintenance of the roads in the district as soon as possible. BSP MLA Akram Khan said he had taken up the issue of poor conditions of the roads in the district with Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and funds for the carpeting and maintenance of the roads has already been allocated.

Cop held on rape charges
: The police on Wednesday arrested a Government Railway Police (GRP) cop for allegedly raping a woman from Punjab. The police said acting on the complaint lodged by the woman, the accused, identified as Shakeel Ahmed Bhatti, was arrested. In the complaint, the woman alleged that Shakeel had raped her at the railway station complex. The police said a case had been registered against the accused and further investigations were on. 

Domestic dispute: An NGO, which was to resolve a dispute between a married couple at Shastri Nagar, had to beat a hasty retreat after the situation took an ugly turn on Thursday. The police said it was informed by an eyewitness and it immediately brought both husband and wife to police station to control the situation. The couple had an old dispute that worsened.

Seminar organised: A one-day seminar on Current Trends in Biotechnology was organised by the Department of Biotechnology, Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar. According to a statement issued here, the seminar was attended by over 500 students from various colleges. The seminar was sponsored by the J&K State Council for Science & Technology, Department of Science and Technology. Prof Varun Sahni, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu, was the chief guest while Prof Rajive Gupta, director, College Development Council, University of Jammu, was the guest of honour.
