Row over Shankaracharya legality resolved
Haridwar, March 6 Notably, the Kumbh administration has decided to give preference and facilities to four major Shankaracharyas namely Jyotish Peeth (Badrik Ashram), Sharda Peeth (Dwarka), Govardhan Peeth (Puri) and Shringeri
Peeth (Karnataka). Also agitating disciples of Shankaracharya Swami Swaroopanand have again entered their camps at Neel Dhara bringing an end to their boycott of festive baths. In the coming days, Shankaracharya Swaroopanand Swami will be coming to Shankaracharya Math situated at Kankhal. With the Akhada Parishad maintaining that it gives due respect to all saints , the issue and demands of certain sections of the saint community for displacing camps of “controversial” saints have taken a back seat. National president of the Akhada Parishad Mahant Gyan Das said no one would be allowed to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere of the Maha Kumbh and it was not only the responsibility of the mela administration to ensure a peaceful conduct of the Kumbh but also of the Akhada Parishad. He said as cases pertaining to the legality of certain Shankaracharyas were pending in the Supreme Court, it would not be appropriate to classify them as fake ones. The parishad is of the view that the Kumbh is a festive occasion for all and so no one can be dislodged if he doesn’t violate or disturb the Maha Kumbh atmosphere. |
Excommunicated Jathedar speaks up
Dehradun, March 6 Professor Ragi, who has been barred from doing katha-kirtans, has refused to bow before the directive of the Panth and is doing the same in various gurdwaras of the country. He said the organisers of the congregations in Punjab where he did kirtans had been getting threat calls. He held the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in Punjab responsible for playing dirty politics by influencing the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Amritsar, to target him and keep him on bay to allegedly manipulate the SGPC elections. He could neither explain the reason of party’s anathema towards him nor as to why he used the official letter head of the Delhi-based body of the Sikhs to write his press statement. He said his remarks pertaining to anti-Sikhism comments written in a separately prepared holy book, the Dasam Granth, at present used by only two Jathedars Kulwant Singh of Hazoor Sahib and Ikbal Singh of Patna Sahib, have been tampered with to present his wrong picture. But, he said he had shown the actual video to the public, which was now supporting him. The former Jathedar said he had been expelled under a well-orchestrated strategy. “Ironically, I have not been permitted to explain my case before the SGPC and barred from singing holy hymns (katha-kirtan). It is under the conspiracy that both controversial Jathedars of Hazoor Sahib and Patna Sahib have been included in the committee of the five members to decide on my matter.” Professor Ragi, who opted for the US citizenship after 1984 riots, has took to the road of struggle and has continued singing holy hymns in various gurdwaras. “I have been singing from the age of five for the past 60 years. My schedule as usual gets packed months before, within and outside India.” He said either the authorities concerned should hear him or he would continue to serve his community as usual. He said he would leave India this month and not be present during the SGPC elections. Nevertheless, the public would vouch for his naivety during voting in the elections.
SAD slams Ragi for defying Takht order
The local unit of the SAD has slammed Prof Ragi for defying the punishment meted out to him by Akal Takht. Bhajan Singh Kala, secretary of the party unit, said Professor Ragi was not allowed to attend any religious function unless he accepted his punishment and got exonerated. He said the Takht had asked its order to be strictly followed by everyone. Supporting Kala were Rajender Singh Rajan, Kalip Singh Jathedar, Malik Singh, Gurcharan Singh Vasu, Harpal Singh Sethi and others. |
Illegal mining continues unabated in Mussoorie
Mussoorie, March 6 When officials of the Forest Department, acting on a tipoff, arrived on the scene, they found miners blatantly digging into the mountain and converting core sand into cemented bricks. The miners fled as soon as the officials, led by Ranger SL Arya, reached the site. The forest officials destroyed the freshly constructed pile of bricks at the site. When they were returning from the site, they were confronted by trade union leader D Bhatt, who questioned the whole exercise. He said poor workers were only constructing their huts which were destroyed in the previous monsoon. Bhatt further said the Forest Department was harassing the poor, but not penalising the rich builders and land mafia who had destroyed Mussoorie by rampant construction. The forest officials, later speaking to The Tribune, said the area was not notified or under any private forest area. Hence, they could not act on it as it was the work of the Mining Department. However, other departments would be notified of the illegal activity going on here. Anger is brewing against the department concerned at the partisan action on the issue. |
