Transport Nagar comes up, finally
Bathinda, February 8 Initially, only the Truck Union, Bathinda, has been shifted to the transport nagar, which was reportedly a major source of traffic chaos in the city. Acquiring a chunk of 67.88 acres of land, the project was initiated about a decade ago, but due to official apathy and getting victim of political arena, it was lying in doldrums, which The Tribune highlighted on February 5 in these columns. Following that, the district administration swung into action and held a meeting with truck union authorities and decided upon shifting all trucks to Transport Nagar till Saturday evening. Chairman of the Improvement Trust Ashok Bharti said, “Now onwards, the truck union will operate from here and no truck will go to the city office. Initially, we have agreed upon giving land to the truck union on contract basis, which is set as Rs 50 per consignment. The trucks, which will be booked for NFL, will pay Rs 25 per consignment. At any stage, if they want to buy the land, we are open to negotiate for the price of land.” Speaking on the occasion, deputy commissioner Rahul Tewari said soon the goods booking agencies, which operate from the city, would also be shifted there. However, the inauguration reflected the hurried step of the administration as the transport nagar is sans proposed features like weighing scale, service station, bank, post office, dispensary, primary school and a fuel station. Except for roads, parking slot and few incomplete structures, hardly anything could be set up there till date. Above all, neither the complex has drinking water facility for truckers nor a boundary wall to avoid mishaps like theft of the trucks parked, which the truckers have brought to the officials’ notice. Talking to TNS, president of the truck union Deepinder Singh Kala said there were about 700 trucks enrolled with the Bathinda Truck Union and would operate from there today onwards. |

Foundation stones laid to develop city lakes await real action
Bathinda, February 8 About a year back, claiming to set a milestone in the development of Bathinda, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal laid the foundation stone of a five-star hotel in the middle of Lakes number 2 and 3, which was allotted to the Vipul Hospitality Limited. Though the stone was laid with much fanfare, the firm awarded with the contract did not turn up till date. As per the information, suspecting the claims of leaders about the pace of development in Bathinda, the company officials had recently declared that they would start the project only after refinery and airport came into existence. The huge stone of the hotel was already in controversy, when Sukhbir Badal again laid a stone for developing the lake sides as joggers' path on January 12 this year. Badal had then informed that the project would cost about Rs 60 lakh, which would include, path, lights, benches, fencing etc. At the time of laying the stone, the deputy CM was quite affirmative for the construction of the project with an immediate effect. However, sources in the district administration informed that the officials of the Bathinda Development Authority (BDA) as well as the forest department were still waiting for the drawings of the project to be approved. A senior official said drawings of the project would reach them by February 10, after which tenders would be called. “The project is still a distant dream as first of all the drawings are yet to be received, then tenders would be called, after which the allotment process would take place. Once the formalities are completed, the construction work would be started,” said the official, seeking anonymity. When contacted, chief administrator of the BDA Ravi Bhagat said, “We have been completing formalities in a speedy way. With the best of efforts, all promised projects would be developed soon.” |
