Militants fire at crowd after Friday prayers, kill 2

Srinagar, February 5
Two persons, including a policeman, were killed and two others injured when militants attacked a police party in the main market of Sopore in Baramulla district this afternoon.

The police said the militants fired at the police patrol when people were coming out of the mosque after Friday prayers.

Head Constable Irshad Ahmad Mirza of the IRP was killed on the spot while a civilian, Ghulam Hassan, died while being taken to hospital.Two others, Nazir Ahmad and Posha, were also injured in the firing, the police said. The incident created panic.Police, CRPF and 22 RR personnel cordoned off the area and launched search operations.

This is the fourth major incident in Sopore during the past one month. The militants also attacked a police station last month in two subsequent attacks in which two persons, including a policeman and a civilian, were killed and four others injured. The militants, who engaged the security forces in a night-long gunbattle in the town escaped on January 31.
