IOA pours cold water on SAF Winter Games
Dehradun, December 8 The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Winter Games Federation of India held a meeting in Delhi yesterday. At the meeting, the Winter Games Federation placed two dates for holding the games in the state. The first proposed schedule falls in January-end and the other in the first week of February. Officials of the IOA have told the state government authorities that keeping in view the Gulmarg Winter Games, Winter Olmpics in Canada and then the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, it would not be possible to hold SAF Winter Games in January 2010. The SAF Winter Games have been under a bad omen for a long time. This was not the first time the games were postponed. Earlier also the games had been postponed for two consecutive years. Recently, heavy rainfall at Auli had damaged a considerable part of newly constructed skiing slop and its repair led to the delay. Thereafter, the president of the International Federation of Skiing Alpine Sub-committee had paid a visit to Auli. But, it did not issue any certificate to the Auli authorities for organising the Winter Games. And now, there are talks that the games will be further delayed. Speaking on the delay, Uttarakhand Sports Secretary Utpal Kumar said: “We are all prepared for the SAF Winter Games. But, there are talks that due to international competition, the schedule for holding the games could be shifted to some future dates. Although we still have not received it in writing from the IOA, we are all prepared to hold games here. If we do not get a chance of holding the SAF Winter Games, an international-level skiing competition will be organised at Auli. But, it is certain that games will take place”. SS Pangti, president of the Uttarakhand Winter Games Federation, who had also gone for the crucial meeting in New Delhi, when contacted was evasive. “I am busy and will not be able to talk today,” he replied. Holding an international competition could prove to be another headache for the state government as there are many hindrances to it. Auli, which has attracted a good number of skiing enthusiasts from neighbouring countries and also abroad, is still waiting for snowfall. The place had just witnessed scanty snowfall last year and so is expected this year. Although Utpal Kumar was optimistic that even if they had a scanty snowfall, a snow gun installed at Auli will come handy. He said for organising a skiing competition one required to have at least 6-inch snow. The snow made by the gun in the winter months lasts for about a month while it only lasts for a week when the weather gets a little warmer. To operate the snow gun, one requires zero degree temperature, which sometime is difficult to obtain. The snow gun in Uttarakhand is only functional from the month of November to March, or at the most by the end of April. The rest of the months, the temperature is too high for the snow gun to function. If the international competition is not held in this period, then the organisers will have to wait for another winter for holding any international competition. There is bleak chance that an international competition will turn out to be a great success. Skiing is not every popular in the neighbouring countries. Apart from Pakistan, the game is not very popular in countries like Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Maldives and Bhutan. Teams participating in the competition will not be competent ones and the standard of the competition will not be too great. The postponement of the games is also a set back for the tourism industry that was expecting to gain on tourism front through the SAF Games.

‘Jis Lahore Nahin Vekhya’ magic on
Nainital, December 8 Performing before a packed hall at CRST Inter College, the artistes came out with a powerful presentation of the play that is celebrating its 20th year of being performed not only in the Indian sub-continent, but also abroad. The play brings out the pain and trauma of people from both sides of the border when they got uprooted from their native places just because they belonged to a particular faith. It also shows how the spirit of humanity at the time of communal frenzy was kept alive by ordinary people who understood the pain and feelings of others. The play revolves around Mai who is the mother of a jeweller in Lahore. Having lost her son in the communal frenzy that engulfed the nation at the time of Independence, she is not willing to leave her haveli in Lahore and move to India. Her haveli is allocated to a refugee from Lucknow, Sikandar Mirza, who has experienced the trauma of being uprooted from his birthplace along with his family. Mirza and his family cannot accept the presence of Mai in their new home and try their best to persuade her to leave, but the old woman in adamant. Humanity brings both Mai and Sikandar’s family together and they co-exist as a single family unit. But there are elements of the forces of darkness that cannot accept the presence of a woman of another faith and they create one hurdle after the other for Mirza and his family. It is on this plot that the play revolves, at times running very high on emotions. The relevance of the plot stands universally true even today as the characters can be found in real-life situations at present also. There are fanatics, liberals, communalists and secularists who are to be found in the society even today, but it is humanity that prevails and binds people from different faiths to co-exist. Originally directed by Nirmal Pande of Bollywood fame, the play performed on Monday had a very powerful performance from Zahoor Alam in the central role of Mai, Jeetendra Bisht as Sikandar Mirza and Bhaskar Bisht as Yakub Khan, alias
Pahalwan. The play has been improvised with liberal usage of Sufi poetry written by Waris Shah Bulle Shah and Amrita
Pritam. It is one of the most popular Hindi plays. Celebrating two decades of regular staging, it is perhaps the only Hindi play to have been performed recently at the Kennedy Centre in Washington DC. It has also been performed in various other cities across the world, including London, Karachi and Sydney. It has been directed by all-time greats like Habib Tanvir in the past. |

Dehradun, December 8 Pangti told the Governor that the Indian Olympics Association had sought a report about the preparations at Auli in Chamoli district and about the indoor ice skating rink in Dehradun and the same report was submitted to IOA officials on November 10, 2009. It was stated in the report that all preparations at both places were in place. Pangti told the Governor that the IOA officials were told that the games could be held between January 31, 2010, and February 5, 2010, as proposed by the state government. He further said the IOA had called the state government and the Winter Games Federation of India officials for a meeting on December 7 and said Summer SAF games were being held in Bangladesh in February, 2010, and then Winter Olympics would be held in Canada closely followed by Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. So due to these events it would not be possible to hold SAF Winter Games in January, 2010. Governor Margaret Alva also wanted to know whether these facilities created for SAF winter games would be put to any use. Pangti told the Governor that national and international tournaments would be held at these places soon. Students take exams sans invigilators
Dehradun, December 8 The proposal was introduced by Principal Brother AJ George, who strongly believes that until unless one is not true to oneself, nothing fruitful can be achieved in life. With an undertaking to never cheat in exams, on a voluntary basis, 100 students are taking the exams of the standard VI level from December 2 to 12. Brother George always had plans to conduct exams in this fashion, though initially students and staff thought that he’s not serious. “In October this year, when I suggested this plan, everybody thought that I am not serious and so the response was pretty not satisfactory. But, I was very serious about this issue and told students to be fair and willingly participate only. Gradually some accepted my faith in this idea,” added Brother George. Another factor, which led to the implementation of this idea, was that in spite of strict punishment for cheating, some adamant students were continuously indulging in cheating and taking pleasure in breaking norms of the school. “Another main reason which inspired me to implement this plan was that in spite of a very strict punishment some notorious students were still breaking the rules. So, I thought let’s switch over to such a plan where students and teachers on a consensus basis work as team and earnestly follow the principles of honesty, dignity and accountability,” said Brother George. The hard work and faith of Brother George turned out to be positive. While the students who are undertaking these exams are now getting more responsible, matured and trustworthy, teachers are equally supporting this cause. “We feel this is a very noble idea as students by this medium will realise the importance of honesty and trust in life. We as teachers are very happy and glad that our Principal has introduced something so different and innovative and are hopeful that for the next examinations more students will take examinations under the existing plan,” said Renu Sareen, English teacher. In the near future, to work on the mission of each one teach one, St Joseph Academy, from the next session, are going to teach children and adults who are keen on taking up studies, but can’t do so due to financial and social constraints. “As an educator, I feel we owe a great responsibility of doing good for society. We are very positive about this plan and are going to assist those who are wiling to study, irrespective of their age, colour, creed and sex,” said Brother George. |
CM calls upon teachers, students to make Vision-2020 a success
Dehradun, December 8 The convention was held on the premises of DAV (PG) College and attended by union members, teachers of Garhwal University, government colleges and students in large numbers. He called upon the teachers and union members to work to make the state government’s Vision-2020 a success. “Teachers are an important part of any society, as their contribution as educator can never be sidelined. Though for Vision 2020 we plan to develop other sectors such as horticulture, industry and energy, we strongly feel that until and unless our education sector is properly functioning, nothing big can be achieved as educated people are a mark of a successful nation,” he said. Motivating the present students, he added that students should not get lured by petty things in life. Rather they should concentrate on bigger and better plans in life. Continous agitations and protests should not be the solution, as this would lead to destruction of innovative ideas. He further said students from far-off places came to avail good education being provided in various institutions of Uttarakhand like IIT Roorkee, Ayurvedic University, Petroleum University and other universities offering a variety of choices. “For the betterment of education sector, teachers support is very much needed and so as a teacher one should always remember his/her role in the upliftment of the society,” asserted the Chief Minister. |
