Swine flu case reported in Nawanshahr
Nawanshahr, December 3 Receiving the confirmation report from the PGI, Dr Guru immediately rang up Dr Jaswinder Singh and Dr Gurdip Singh Sethi of Raja Hospital for immediate isolation of the patient. Besides, Dr Guru rushed to the hospital for supplying the requisite medicine, Oseltamivir capsules. He handed over a box of medicine to the doctors at Raja Hospital and assured them that the district Health Department had sufficient quantity of medicine for treating swine flu cases. Dr Gurdip Singh Sethi, while giving details to this correspondent, said the patient came for treatment in the hospital on November 29. She was suffering from cough, fever and acute breathlessness. The requisite clinical tests were conducted and though she was found suffering from acute respiratory distress syndrome ( ARDS), but the symptoms like pneumonia, blood infection, etc, which were normally responsible for ARDS, could not be found in the patient. Hence, it was suspected that the patient might be suffering from swine flu, said Dr Sethi, adding that the district Health Department was informed and the samples of nose and throat secretions were sent for examination through the district Health Department to the PGI, Chandigarh, on Wednesday evening. Dr Jaswinder Singh of Raja Hospital said as per the instructions of the state government requisite arrangements of isolated ward and ultramodern medical equipment had already been made for treating swine flu cases in the hospital. Hence, there was no need to be panicky or shifting the patient from there. Dr Guru said the District Health Department, Jalandhar, had also been informed so that the case history of the patient could be traced to find from where she had got H1N1 infection. |

Hoshiarpur, December 3 Disclosing this while talking to mediapersons here this afternoon, board Chairman Baldev Raj Chawla said that 86 per cent area had already been covered under water supply, whereas the sewerage facility was being provided in 59 per cent area of the state. A sum of Rs 660 crore had been earmarked for water supply and sewerage work for Amritsar, Rs 380 crore for Jalandhar, Rs 318 crore for Ludhiana, Rs 121 crore for Patiala, Rs 108 crore for Bathinda and Rs 75.39 crore for Hoshiarpur. Nearly 70 per cent area of Hoshiarpur town had been covered under water supply, whereas sewerage had been laid in 75 per cent area. Out of Rs 75.39 crore, Rs 14.73 crore and Rs 30.84 crore would be spent on bringing the entire area of the town under water supply and sewerage scheme, respectively. Besides; Rs 29.83 crore would be spent on installing a treatment plant. Answering a question, Chawla said sewerage treatment plants were only existing in Muktsar, Nangal and in one of the towns of Amritsar district. To install such plants, 50 per cent amount would be provided by the Central government, 30 per cent by the respective municipal corporation or council and 20 per cent by the state government. Chawla said groundwater level had gone down 60 feet. Two to five feet groundwater was going down annually. Keeping in view the existing conditions, Punjab would face an acute water shortage by 2020. Emphasising the need for saving water at every source, Chawla suggested rainwater harvesting. A state-level NGO, Save Water Organisation, led by him had recently been formed for awakening the people to save water. |

Tuition centre told to refund Rs 57,000
Hoshiarpur, December 3 Anita Singh and Sareen Berry had filed a complaint against Kulwinder Pal Singh and Anita Thakur on the ground that both were running Guru Nanak Institute at Talwara and they offered an ETT course in the institute. They were told that the classes would be held in the institute at Talwara, but they had to appear in the examination at Jammu. They charged Rs 30,000 each from them. Anita Singh and Sareen Berry alleged that they were approaching Kulwinder Pal Singh and Anita Thakur for counselling, but to no avail and when they pressed hard for counselling and the examination in ETT, they demanded Rs 20,000 on the pretext of providing a seat in the management quota. The consumer court held that Anita Thakur had produced on record an affidavit of Kulwinder Pal Singh wherein he had deposed that he was the owner of Guru Nanak Tuition Centre, Talwara. It was further deposed that he was responsible for all the fees. The forum further held that Kulwinder Pal Singh had failed to arrange for the counselling and the examination in ETT, therefore, he was liable to refund the amount. |

Special court to hear NRI-related cases
Jalandhar, December 3 The District and Sessions Judge, in his orders on November 18, has asked to transfer 363 cases relating to NRIs, currently running in around 12 different courts, to the court under Jaspinder Singh. The orders also state that while the new NRI cases shall be filed in the special court, those being heard in other courts shall be transferred to the new one and the persons concerned informed accordingly. Welcoming the move, Kamaljeet Singh, President of the NRI Sabha, said, “NRIs across the world will be benefited by this decision of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Now, their cases will be solved early.” NRIs often complained of the tedious judicial proceedings in the country. They usually fould themselves running out of time as they had to return to the foreign shores, he said. |

Kahnuwan to get modern hospital at cost of Rs 100 cr
Pathankot, December 3 This was stated by Punjab Public Relations and NRI Affairs Minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan, while jointly laying the foundation stone of the 1,000-bedded hospital at Chotta Ghulughara Gurdwara at Sambh Kahnuwan, 45 km from here, with Sekhwan said medical facilities of international standard would be available in the hospital which is likely to be completed in two years. He said the hospital would be the first one of its kind to come up in a rural area of Punjab where elaborate medical facilities would be provided to the rural masses. He said an emergency helipad would also be constructed to facilitate the landing of choppers to transport patients from distant areas. Prominent figures present on the occasion included Bhai Jaswinder Singh, Head Granthi, Darbar Sahib, Amritsar, Sant Sukhjit Singh Seechewal, Sant Baba Harbans Singh Kar Sewa Wale, Sayed Shri Anwar Hussain Chistee Ajmer Wale and Baba Raghubir Dass of Pindori Dham. |
