As part of this campaign, special camps for the detection of cancer cases, especially women, were organised from October 26 to November 14 in 15 community health centres (CHCs)/primary health centres (PHCs)/area hospital of the district.

At these camps, 1481 women were examined for breast lump and as many as 352 were identified for mammography tests. Of them, 39 were detected as suspected cancer patients after their mammography test reports came in.

During these camps, gynaecologists examine the women for cancer disease. Later, a team of a Delhi-based NGO “Roko Cancer” conducted mammography test on the suspected cancer patients (women) while a radiologist of the local Civil Hospital gave reports about the mammography tests for sending the suspected patients for biopsy tests.

Talking to TNS, Bathinda civil surgeon Dr Neelam Bajaj said some patients had been sent for biopsy to the Faridkot Medical College and some were already undergoing treatment. She added that the biopsy reports of some suspected patients were still awaited. Neelam Bajaj also said the payment to the “Roko Cancer” team for doing mammography tests had been arranged by MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal.

It may be noted that except the camps held at Pakka Kalan and Balluana villages, at least one examinee was suspected to be a cancer patient at each of the remaining camps. Maximum number of suspected cancer cases (six) was detected at Mour village, followed by five at Goniana Mandi camp and four cases each at Nathana and Talwandi Sabo camps.

Three cases each were detected at Singo, Badiala, Sangat and Kot Shamir check-up camps and two suspected cases each were detected at Raman Mandi, Ghuda and Bhucho Mandi camps, followed by one suspected patient each at Jodhpur Pakhar and Ballianwali villages check-up camps.

Senior Congress leader and MLA, Guruharsahai assembly segment, Rana Gurmit Sodhi while urging the Punjab government to make arrangements for fair trial of Ramandeep Singh for allegedly crushing five persons to death three days ago, demanded suitable compensation for the next of kin of the deceased.

Rana Gurmit Sodhi, who visited the bereaved families in their respective villages today to express his sympathies with them, said that if such accused were allowed to go scot free, the number of accidents would increase manifolds.

Ramandeep Singh alias Raman, a grandson of former Akali MLA from Guruharsahai of this district, crushed five persons including two couples and ten-year-old boy to death with his speeding vehicle near village Lakho Ke Behram, 22 kilometres from here, about three days ago.

Ramandeep Singh managed to flee away from the spot after crushing five people to death. A case under section 304 of the IPC (for committing culpable homicide) was registered against him at the police station, Mamdot.

Those, who were crushed to death after Ramandeep Singh allegedly run his speeding Scorpio over two motorcycles, were identified as Balbir Singh, his wife Pritam Kaur and son Gurnaib Singh alias Nabby and another couple Kikar Singh and Manjit Kaur.

Sodhi said the SAD-BJP combine government of Punjab had not been paying any kind of attention to put a check on the road accidents, which had been increasing due to bad roads and absence of any agency to maintain the smooth flow of vehicular traffic.

At least Rs five lakh must be given to the next kin of those killed in the accident as all those, killed in the accident, were poor and the only breadwinner for their respective families, Sodhi said.
