Amritsar, November 23
In a sensational turn of events, the Chheharta police today arrested Sukhdev Singh of Basarke Bhaini village for killing his wife and daughter.

The bodies of Shobha and Puja, wife and daughter of the accused, respectively, were found hanged with the roof at their residence on November 14. The police had registered a case of suicide at that time. However, during investigation, it was found that they were first strangulated and then hanged.

The police authorities claimed that post-mortem reports confirmed that they were first drugged and then strangulated before being hanged to the roof to make it look a suicide case. On suspicion, the police arrested Sukhdev, a truck driver, who confessed to his crime.

Shobha was the second wife of Sukhdev while Puja was from his first wife Geetu. However, he was not happy with them, which often led to fights in the family. On November 14, fed up of the quarrels, he decided to kill them. He first gave them some intoxicants in food after which they fell unconscious. He then strangulated them.

According to police authorities, Sukhdev had remained in jail for 11 months for allegedly burning his first wife Geetu to death. However, he was released in absence of lack of evidence, they added.

Amritsar, November 23
Thieves broke into a jewellery shop and decamped with gold jewellery reportedly worth crores at Gali Ardasian, near Guru Bazaar, here.

The incident took place on Saturday night, while it came to light this morning when a servant of the shop found the lock broken and informed Adarsh Kumar, the owner of showroom.

The police has registered a case. According to information, the thieves gained entry from the roof by breaking open the doors of the stairs of the five-storey building. They broke open the safe of the showroom using a gas cutter.

Adarsh, who earlier used to live in the building, had shifted residence to Rose Avenue. However, he was still running the gold jewellery shop on the ground floor of the building.

Senior police officials, including Pardeep Kumar Yadav, SP (city), and Dhanpreet Kaur, ASP, reached the spot and conducted investigations. Yadav said the police had interrogated several “karigars” of the nearby shops in this connection.

The SHO of the area police station said the owner had not given the details of the jewellery stolen yet.

Jalandhar, November 23
The tall claims of the Education Department of providing better facilities to participants of the 55th National School Games notwithstanding, a majority of the students of local government schools had to walk several kilometres to welcome Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal here today.

He was here at the Guru Gobind Singh Stadium to inaugurate the 55th National School Games, which started today. Students of the local government schools, who gathered as audience for the event, were either seen walking the distance or hiring rickshaws to reach the venue.

A majority of the students said they started early from their schools to cover the distance as they had to report at the venue well on time. The students of Dev Raj Senior Secondary School, Mai Hiran Gate, said they had a harrowing time in getting rickshaws in the morning to reach the stadium. “We took 37 rickshaws to carry 100 students, which was literally a problem. Even after the completion of the event we will have to look for rickshaws to drop the students safely back to the school. The education authorities should have ensured proper transportation facility for the students,” rued a teacher requesting anonymity.

Another teacher said had it been a political rally the parties concerned would have ensured the best fleet of buses for showing the political strength. “The so-called politicians are least bothered about the security and the welfare of the students who came on foot through the busy city roads,” she added.

Even the students of Government School, Mithapur, came on foot. “We came in a long queue along with our teachers to attend this event,” said a student. However, there were some schools whose students managed to reach the stadium by minibuses but faced problem of overloading. “Many of us could not even get a proper seat as the number of students were more than the seating capacity,” said a student of Government School, Raipur Rasulpur.

As if this was not enough, the students were made to wait for nearly two hours for the Deputy Chief Minister’s arrival. The event, which was scheduled for 11 am sharp, began at about 1 pm. The students were seen seeking permission for going to washrooms and drinking water. “It has been more than two hours since the students are sitting without any refreshment. At least some arrangement for light refreshment was must for the students who came from far off villages of the district,” maintained a teacher.

However, when this correspondent spoke to the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal about the poor transportation facility, he said, “It is a good suggestion which has been brought to my notice. I would definitely look into this matter,” he added.

2-day auto strike ends in hours

Jalandhar, November 23
Two-day strike call given by the Jalandhar Autorickshaw Workers Union was rolled back within hours on the first day after getting assurance from district transport and traffic authorities.

The transport system of city was crippled today when owners of nearly 6,000 autorickshaws suspended their services against the chalan drive of the authorities. Owners of autorickshaws lifted the strike after getting conformation that only those vehicles, which are having registration number other than Jalandhar, will be targeted.

However, autorickshaws will provide services only from tomorrow.

To contain increasing levels of pollution and traffic, the High Court, in its fresh orders, has directed transport authorities to make it mandatory that registrations of new autorickshaws and renewal of permit can only be done unless vehicle is equipped with LPG kit. To enforce these directions, the authorities started chalan drive in the city. Autorickshaws, with registration number other than Jalandhar, were also at target of authorities.

While taking to The Tribune, union president Pritam Singh said, “We admit that autos from other districts are also running in Jalandhar. Move of authorities to ban these autos in city is not being condemned by us.”

On the other side, District Transport Officer Babita Kaler said the drive against vehicles without local registration number will continue. She added that permits would not be renewed or issued to the vehicles without LPG kit. Nearly 500 autorickshaws are waiting to get their permits renewed.
