MSP of cane remains matter of debate
Roorkee, October 4 Though some are maintaining that the MSP should be around Rs 200 per quintal, others are demanding that the price should be fixed at Rs 250, while some are in favour that it should be made Rs 300 per quintal. The district president of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Sanjay Chaudhary demanded the price this year as Rs 200 per quintal. On the other hand, the Uttarakhand Kisan Morcha (UKM) seeks the MSP to be Rs 250 per quintal this year, while other units of various farmers’ bodies have been demanding the MSP to be Rs 300 per quintal to save the interests of the cane producers as well as the cane belt of the area. “The MSP of the crop should be fixed following the pattern of the neighbouring state, Haryana,” said BKU’s Sanjay Chaudhary. Haryana has already announced the MSP as Rs 185-190 per quintal for this year. In favour of their demand of minimum Rs 250 as MSP this year, UKM national general secretary Rakesh Aggarwal reasoned: “At the moment cane crushers are offering cane price at Rs 210 to Rs 240 per quintal. When these small-time businessmen can offer this rate why the sugar mills can’t give minimum Rs 250 as MSP to the farmers.” However, some other units under the banner of BKU have been asking for minimum Rs 300 per quintal. These bodies maintained that the rates, being offered by the crushers would be increased in coming days, which would be over Rs 300 per quintal. “We are getting very low rates of our crop. It should be increased up to Rs 300 per quintal,” said Irshaad, a cane grower of Libberheri village. Notably, last year, the minimum support price of the cane was Rs 142-147 per quintal. Meanwhile, the UKM has decided to hold a massive rally in the town tomorrow in which the farmers would give memorandum of their demands to the Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank through

Dehradun, October 4 She was speaking here today on the opening ceremony of a computer education programme for police personnel and their children being run by the Vedanta Foundation at the Police Lines. “Even though I have retired from my services, it doesn’t mean that my goal ends here. My goal is to serve people and it is continuing with such kind of initiatives,” replied Bedi when asked whether her goal ended with her retirement. She added that she was proud to have worked as a police officer and she wanted to work in the police force in her every birth. “Even in my next birth I would want to join the police service as it is the one of the jobs which allows us to serve others,” she said. Elaborating on the computer education programme, she said this programme was already being run with the Uttar Pradesh police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Punjab police and the response had been great. Rawat-Nishank verbal duel gets ugly
Haridwar, October 4 Replying to Nishank’s statement during his visit to Haridwar in which he had raised doubts over the seriousness of the UPA government on Maha Kumbh stating that the UPA was not cooperating, Rawat took a strong exception and said Nishank was trying to play politics. Rawat said while the BJP-led state government had sought lesser funds for the upcoming Maha Kumbh the central government had sanctioned Rs 500 crore, citing the magnitude and importance of the fair, which was more than the amount sought for. Further adding, he said the question of non-cooperation from the central government was shocking and nothing but a reason to escape from the slow and lackadaisical work being carried out under the Kumbh funds. “How can the CM raise question on the Centre’s intention when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh himself is taking a keen interest in Maha Kumbh and has conveyed to the state government that the Centre will sanction more funds if the state government requires additional funds for carrying out ongoing projects,” remarked Rawat. “The Chief Minister dismissing officers during an inspection suggests the anomalies and corruption going on in Kumbh-related work,” remarked Rawat. Highlighting his vision for Maha Kumbh and development of his constituency, Rawat said the broadening of roads and expansion of highways was his priority from day one. Extending gas pipeline to the city, expansion and construction of new railway lines, improvement of canals, internal roads, sorting out power problem and making Haridwar an investment hub was his priority. He also said the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) had not yet slipped from Haridwar and he had personally urged the CM and urban state minister Madan Kaushik to again make a proposal and earmark land area ensuring its availability so that Haridwar could get one of the finest institutes in the world. On the national front as union cabinet minister for employment and labour, Rawat accepted that worldwide economic recession had severely affected job prospects, but India had still sustained it quite successfully. He said the central government was focusing on skill development initiative and was targeting five crore people who would be trained so that by 2015 India had an upper hand in skilled manpower. To achieve this target, on the anvil was setting up of 500 new Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), while modernisation process was on in 500 ITIs with modernisation going on in 1,396 such institutes. |

Cops suspended for bid to avoid jurisdiction
Dehradun, October 4 Abhinav Kumar, SSP Dehradun, told The Tribune that after an inquiry it came to light that the police officials received a call from a junior engineer informing them of a body being stuck on the banks of the canal. But instead of taking appropriate legal action, the police personnel took the body downstream and threw it back into the canal so that it could flow towards Uttar Pradesh in a bid to avoid any work related with the case in their jurisdiction. The SSP said for not doing panchnama and for adopting illegal tactics, police post in charge Raghubir Singh Chaudhary and three other police constables had been suspended. Earlier, it was being assumed that the body was thrown into the canal by the police officials as two boys had seen them while pushing the body downstream. There were also some reports that the woman might have been raped. The boys told their elders about the incident and a large number of people gathered at the spot and detained the driver of the vehicle in which the body was supposedly brought. But the police said there were no injuries visible on her body. The police added that a clear picture could come up only after the post-mortem report. However, sources suspected it to be a case of a suicide. According to the SSP, the deceased has been identified as Ruksana (44), a resident of Dhakrani village in
the area. Nissar, husband of the deceased, had lodged a complaint of missing of his wife on October 2. He told the police that he had a fight with his wife after which she left the house and didn’t turn up. It was being presumed that she probably committed suicide by
jumping into the canal. |
103 girls awarded Udyan Shalini fellowship
Dehradun, October 4 The chief guest for the occasion were Doon University Vice-Chancellor Girijesh Pant, senior IAS officers Rakesh Kumar and Keshav Desiraju. Around 15 years ago the foundation came into existence with an endeavour to make winners out of those who for various reasons are forced to abandon higher studies and endlessly carry the burden of society. However, the Dehradun chapter began in the year 2003, with support of various educationists, businessmen and philanthropists who took up the initiative for such a noble cause. And apart from Dehradun, the foundation has been actively working in Kurukshetra, Kolkata and Aurangabad and has provided benefits to almost 1,200 candidates. The selected students are from the school level and apart from being a first divisionary, another main criterion for the selection is that the guardians of the deserving candidates should not be earning more then Rs 8,000 a month. “Our sole aim is to help those girls who have the talent and the zeal, but due to the financial problems they are deprived of the basic education. Apart from providing finances, we even guide them through the help of mentors and people who are helping us to fulfill our goals,” informed Faheem Khan, senior programme coordinator, Udyan Foundation. However, where the foundation began with the support of one accomplished donor, presently with its
constant effort and perseverance it has both national and international
donors. Along with Dehradun, the meritorious students were also selected from Haridwar, Rishikesh, Doiwala and many other
nearby locations. “After providing the fellowship, the students are also given assistance to pursue professional courses like BTech, BA, MBA etc so that they live a decent life in future and don’t become burden on society. The oath ceremony in itself signifies that from now onwards these girls are under our guidance,” added Faheem Khan. Doon to have first synthetic track
Dehradun, October 4 The need of having a synthetic track was first taken up at the recently concluded North Zone Athletics Meet that was held at Maharana Pratap Sports College
in the city. The college authorities have already forwarded a proposal in this matter to the administration. A 400x4-metre track is expected to come on the premises of Maharana Pratap Sports College. Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank first referred to it at the opening ceremony of the North Zone
Athletics Meet. Athletics coach at the sports college Manoj Sharma said, “The track will be of great help for the athletes as they can then prepare themselves in a better way for national championships that are organised on synthetic tracks”. Revealing further, he said bad weather affects the performance of the athletes on the grass track, which loosens up during rains. But this does not happen in the case of synthetic tracks. Practice on a synthetic track is different from that on the grass track because its surface is harder. Athletes need to work hard on developing their lower limbs on a synthetic track compared to the grass track, otherwise there is a fear of sustaining injuries, said Sharma. The coming up of a synthetic track at Dehradun can also give the city an opportunity to organise national-level tournaments and camps. |
