Collection of saris, jewellery for festive season

Dehradun, September 21
An exclusive collection of saris, jewellery and clutch bags was displayed in an exhibition at Fab-India store. The exhibition, which began today, will conclude on September 24.

Women of all age groups thronged the store to splurge on a variety of items in this season of festivals.

Whether it’s Navratari celebrations, Durga Puja or Diwali, the spirit of festivity remains incomplete without a perfect combination of good food and clothes.

Along with standard items of Fab-India, to promote the ethnic handicrafts of our country, the store in different cities from time to time keeps on organising exhibitions comprising articles which are exquisite in nature. Saris, from cotton to traditional brocade, chanderi, kota, tasar in silk ranged between Rs 1,000 and Rs 15,000 were on display. Both in printed as well as in plain patterns, the sari looks apt to drape on any occasion.

“I am very fond of ethnic wear and I am happy that such exhibitions give people a chance to add many options to their wardrobe,” said Geeta, a homemaker.

However, to add variety for customers who truly adore such genre of stuff, the exhibition also showcased silver and gold-plated jewellery and embroidered clutches complementing colourful saris. Coconut shell jewellery, latest chic beads, Jaipur’s semi-precious stone jewellery in silver and gold attracted the attention of women who are interested in a collection which is unusual and matches very well with the taste of a contemporary woman.

Clutch bags in silk and brocade material with designer embroidery added a tinge of sophistication. “Prior to this exhibition we organised a sari exhibition and as we got a good response, we thought of displaying not only our selected range of saris, but also jewellery and clutch bags so that our customers get more choices,” said Aarti Kohli, manager of Fab-India.

Interestingly, with variety there’s quality assurance of the brand and a range, which allows everyone to pick up a thing or two. While the price of sari starts from Rs 1,000, that of jewellery is from Rs 190 and clutch bags from Rs 500.

“On the first day, we have received an excellent response as there’s something for everyone. Moreover, in future also we have plans to offer a variety to people of Dehradun who are fond of innovative items,” added Kohli.

Dehradun’s namkeen queen
Neena Sharma
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, September 21
A little over six years ago, an amiable lady could be seen engaging the crowd in small talk imploring them to go ahead and taste different variety of namkeens that she had put on display at the exhibition venue.

The courteous gesture helped Asha Sharma build clients and a lasting relationship was formed. Today, she has half of Dehradun eating out of her hand and people just love Asha Aunty’s namkeen.

The trust that she built over the years emboldened her to venture into retail and now Asha’s namkeens are available at the Vishal Mart retail counter.

Sold under the brand name Asha Namkeen, it has over 50 different varieties of namkeens on offer ready to tickle your taste buds. As many as 250 more recipes are in the pipeline. The popular ones include banana chips, Ratlami sew, Malvi sew, dhyania chivda, alu pudina seva and others.

For the devotees, there are namkeens that can be eaten during fasts.

She also has an association with Gujarat Khadi Gramudyog from where she gets Gujarati snacks. In fact, she is credited with introducing Doonites to Gujarati and Rajasthani snacks.

What forced a housewife to venture into cottage industry is plain business. She explains, “I began to run my father’s electric motor machine shop at a very young age in Dewas (Madhya Pradesh). There were hardly any women in that business. But the trust reposed by my father, who was a freedom fighter, motivated me to opt for business once I got married”.

Her family settled in Dehradun in 1989 and to the credit of the woman, a greater part of the finances that went towards setting up her business were self generated. “I sold my land to generate money and except for a small loan from Khadi Gramudyog, I can say that we have no liabilities to pay,” Asha said.

What sets her products apart from the clutter that now pervades the market is the trust factor and the purity of ingredients. The values instilled by her father of winning the people’s trust by delivering on quality have seen her sail through rough patches.

“Utmost care is taken while selecting ingredients. The products to be consumed during fasts are cooked in groundnut oil,” she emphasised.

The mini-cottage industry that she has set up in her own backyard employs seven people. Believing in the adage that the family that works together stays together, her husband two sons and daughter-in-law are involved in the business. She manages to earn around Rs 2.5 lakh a month.

“We employ needy women. They are told that the customer is supreme. If the customer is not satisfied, we ensure that the product is immediately changed,” stressed Asha.

The sale of her products is generally good during the festival season.

She says, “I have a dedicated clientele of 5,000 customers. I hope to rope in some more through retail counters that will be set up at other departmental stores in the coming days”.

Ready to expand her business, Asha is keenly looking for a tie-up that will take care of finances. “I am looking for a tie-up that allows me to come up with new namkeens every week. So far, I have not been able to catch the attention of bankers or the government though they all swear by my namkeens,” rues Asha.

Plan to make hospital working paperless
Neena Sharma
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, September 21
Medical slips issued by main hospitals in the state will become a thing of the past. Soon these will
be replaced by electronic medical record (EMR), which is an important component of modern hospital management.

Part and parcel of hospital management information system, the EMR will usher in a paperless system, paving the way for electronically transfer of records from one hospital to the other within seconds.

The project is expected to take six or eight months and all 38 hospitals in the state, including base hospitals, district hospitals (for men and women) and combined hospitals will benefit from the new system.

“We have only begun a preliminary exercise. The project will be run on a public-private partnership mode.

“As such companies have to be approved, for which a tendering process has to be initiated,” said Sudhanshu Bahuguna, Directorate of Medical Health.

As of now in Doon Hospital, only the process to issue prescription slip is computerised.

But, with the introduction of new system, the patient will get access to all treatments as advised by the respective doctor through a unique number issued to him.

“The number will be a unique identity and contain entire health record of the patient,” said Dr RK Pant, CMS, Doon Hospital.

A team of medical officers has visited the Kasturba Gandhi Medical Hospital Trust in Wardha to familiarise with the functioning of the system installed over there.

In most government hospitals in the country, half-hearted attempts were made.

As such a partial computerised system exists in government hospitals in Lucknow, Delhi and Chandigarh.

Hospital managers point out that for the installation of the system, a software company has to be hired that requires a hefty investment to the tune of at least Rs 5 crore.

“It is a challenge to keep the system going once the system is installed, no wonder it is partially operating in most hospitals,” said a top official.

According to sources, Gaurav is suspected to be in Delhi and massive raids have been conducted in the Capital. The police has sent its team to Meerut and Delhi in his search.

Adulterated food products flood markets
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, September 21
In view of the festival season and with an eye on making quick bucks, unscrupulous elements have begun flooding the market with adulterated food products.

It is believed that large quantities of adulterated milk and cheese (paneer) have already reached several diaries in view of Eid.

Recently, the Raipur police had seized adulterated paneer from the area, but despite strict action, the business continues to thrive. Today alone the police seized around 50 kg of paneer and one quintal of milk from Dehradun. After carrying out examination of the products, Senior Health Officer, Municipal Corporation, Gurpal Singh did not find them fit for consumption and were later destroyed.

Another incident came to light today morning when a team conducted raids at Ram Singh Dairy in Patel Nagar and destroyed adulterated paneer and milk. Dr Gurpal Singh said action would be taken against the dairy owner.

Unable to distinguish between the real and the fake, the gullible public is being fooled, especially when the requirement of these products has increased in view of the festival season.

Wildlife institute does its bit at Antarctica
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, September 21
Dehradun-based Wildlife Institute of India (WII) for the first time has come up with a programme of long-term monitoring of birds and mammals in the Indian Ocean and Antarctica.

Presenting their papers at the WII’s annual research seminar, WII scientists - S Sathyakumar and K Sivakumar - assessed the status of birds and mammals in the southern Indian Ocean, Larsemann Hills, and along the Princess Astrid Coast, near Maitri, in Antarctica from January to March.

Some of these observations have been made for the first time. In the southern Indian Ocean, a total of 46 bird species and nine marine mammals were recorded along the ship route.

Density estimates for whales were associated with high CVs due to low number of sightings, clumped distribution of whales and low sample sizes without replication.

The density of hump-backed whale was low, but its number of sightings was high when compared to other whales.

Apart from long-term monitoring of Antarctic wildlife and their habitats, the scientists did surveys for estimation of penguins and seals at certain stretches within the Antarctic besides recording some new birds in their sea journey from Cape Town to Larsemann Hills in the Antarctic.

The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) had participated in the XIV, XV and XVIth Indian Scientific Expeditions to Antarctica (1994-95 to 1996-97) and is presently implementing a monitoring programme entitled “Developing a long-term monitoring programme for birds and mammals in the Indian Ocean and Antarctica”.

The institute proposes to continue the wildlife monitoring programme during the next 3-5 years (2009-2011) to document and detect changes in wildlife abundance.
