DTC drivers clamour for joining letters
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 20
The laxity of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) was exposed today as hundreds of youths who were selected as drivers last year gathered outside the Delhi Secretariat demanding their joining letters.

The youths were told that the corporation did not have enough number of buses to allot them. Hence, they were not given their joining letters.

It must be noted the DTC always cites inadequate number of drivers as the reason behind the low number of its buses plying on city roads. But today’s demonstration proved that the corporation lacks buses not drivers, the agitators said.

Presently, the DTC plies only 3,500 buses on city roads, which are not sufficient for commuters.

In 2007, the Delhi Subordinate Selection Board (DSSB) had advertised that the DTC needed 10,000 drivers.

After which, 5,400 applicants were selected and were given training for eight days. Of them, 3,000 have joined. The remaining candidates have not been given joining letters yet.

One of the protestors said they were called to the DTC headquarters every week. But they were neither given their joining letters, nor given a bus to drive.

Meanwhile, the DTC chairman Naresh Kumar informed that most of the selected candidates had joined the duty. It would take at least two months’ time to accommodate them as the transport department was likely to buy buses, he added.

The youths had come to meet Delhi transport minister Arvinder Singh Lovely and inform him about the lacklusture attitude of the concerned officials.

They said they had been unemployed for many months. Earlier, they used to work with private firms. Some were driving Blueline buses.

4 placement agents cheat hundreds, caught
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 20
Four placement agents were arrested by the south Delhi police for duping hundreds of people in Delhi, police said today. Police believes them to be involved in more than 100 such crimes.

The accused have been identified as Narayan Sahu (26), Raj Kumar (31), Urmila (23) and Neetu (19). They were arrested from Hauz Khas area last night. All are in their mid-twenties and hail from Bihar.

According to the police, Jai Narayan and Raj Kumar used to place the two girls in people’s house as maids, who after working there for some time would decamp with money, jewellery and expensive items.

Seven mobile phones, a digital camera, sunglasses, printed receipts of different placement agencies and police verification forms were also recovered from their possession.

According to police, the arrest came after a south Delhi resident P.K. Malik complained of having been robbed of Rs 40, 000 and a digital camera from his house by a maid he had hired only a day earlier.

Malik reported that he noticed an advertisement in the name of ‘Premi Placement’ in an English daily and contacted them for a maidservant on phone.

The placement agency promised to supply the maid at Shahpur Jat crossing and at the given time, a boy along with a maid came on the spot. The boy introduced the maid to the complainant.

He took Rs 8,000 as advance and commission. The next day when the complainant came out of bathroom, he found the maid missing from the house. Some household articles, including a digital camera and Rs 40,000 were also found stolen.

During investigation, the address given by the placement agency was found bogus and the phone numbers were switched off.

A person who helped the placement agency in giving advertisement was traced and through him another number of the placement agency was taken and its whereabouts located.

Thereafter, the members of the police team requested the placement agency on phone to provide a maid.

The agency promised to come with the maid at Munirka-R.K. Puram T-Point.

A trap was laid by the police team and the above-named two suppliers and two maids were arrested.

The complainant P.K Malik also identified one of the suppliers and the maid, who had slipped out of his house.

62,000 plot applicants await refund
Our Correspondent

Greater Noida, August 20
Over 62,000 unsuccessful applicants who had applied for a plot in Greater Noida residential schemes are now waiting for the refund of their registration money. The draw of the schemes was taken out over a month ago.

According to applicants, hundreds of crores of their money is lying with the Greater Noida Authority. But GNIDA sources say the delay in remitting the refund is on the part of the banks who have not so far provided it with the lists of the applicants. Normally, people get their refund in 15 to 20 days after the draw.

The draw of two residential schemes was taken out by Greater Noida Authority in July. The draw of low budget scheme for 3,760 flats was taken out on July 21 and 22 this year. Each applicant deposited Rs 35,000 as registration money for this scheme.

Over 30,000 applicants applied for a plot in this scheme.

Another residential scheme was launched for 2000 plots on 130-metre-wide road from Greater Noida to Ghaziabad on February 17 this year. There were 1,200 plots of 162 sq mt. A registration fee of Rs 2.31 lakh for bigger plots and Rs 1.70 lakh for smallar plots each was fixed. Over 35,000 people applied for a plot in these schemes.

The draw was held on July 29, 2009 in which only 3,727 lucky persons were allotted the plots while over 62,000 could not get a plot. All of them are now waiting for the refund of their registration money and making trips to GNIDA offices.

The officials at GNIDA offices are not helpful. They give evasive replies, allege most applicants like Amit Kasna of Delta–I, who says that their money lying with GNIDA is not earning any interest for them while the Authority earns handsome interest from this huge amount from the banks.

Additional CEO Sudhir Kumar says banks have not yet sent in their respective lists of applicants which is holding up the remittance of the refund.

Govt biased in giving funds for roads: MCD
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 20
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) today accused the Delhi government of discriminatory behaviour against the civic body in allocation of funds for maintenance of urban roads.

The Leader of the House Subhash Arya said out of the total 30,923 km roads in Delhi, the MCD was responsible for 27,139 km.

He said as per a report of the comptroller and auditor general (CAG) of India, the MCD, which maintained 88 per cent of Delhi’s road network, received very meager allocations from the government compared to the Public Works Department (PWD) which maintained only 7.6 per cent of the roads.

The MCD maintains 16,826 km urban roads and 10,313 km of rural roads, whereas PWD maintains only 2,350 km length of urban roads.

He said no funds had been provided under the plan head for the maintenance of rural roads.

“According to the CAG report, during 2003-04 to 2007-08, the approved outlay for PWD per km of road maintained by it was 15 to 43 times higher than that of MCD. In the absence of relevant database on its road network, the MCD could not have even put up a considered case for increased allocations to the government of Delhi,” said Arya
