Pest management tips for cotton farmers
Abohar, August 3 While making this observation, Dr VK Yadav, Director, Integrated Pest Management, said during inaugural speech at the “Season long training programme on cotton” here on Monday that the Union Ministry of Agriculture has sponsored a programme, one each in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat to enlighten officials and farmers on different aspects of integrated pest management (IPM) of cotton crop, from sowing to harvesting. Agricultural development officers (ADOs) from all cotton growing districts of the state are participating in the month-long programme in the Central Institute of Post Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET) here. Intriguingly, speeches made by most of the experts were not much audible as the CIPHET sound system as usual failed to work. Informing that the Centre had launched “strengthening and modernization of pest management” scheme through 31 centres located in 28 states, Dr Yadav said so far, 25,385 millions of bio-control agents and sufficient amount of bio-pesticides have been produced and released by the centers for the benefit of farmers. This will result in considerable decline in chemical pesticides consumption. Farmers Field Schools (FFS) are also being conducted, he informed. Dr RK Gupta, in-charge CIPHET, Dr PK Arora from the Punjab Agriculture University (PAU), BS Chahal, chief agricultural officer, Dr Jasvir Singh, Training Coordinator, IPM, and Buta Singh, Technical Officer from Jalandhar, also spoke during the inaugural session. |
