Kahnuwan (Gurdaspur), August 1
The campaigning for the byelection of this assembly segment, which is set to witness a keen contest between Sewa Singh Sekhwan (SAD)and Fateh Jung Singh Bajwa (Cong), came to an end this evening.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, who had been here for the past two days, left the area this afternoon after meeting some of the vote catchers. He held meetings with Agriculture Minister Sucha Singh Langah and the son and daughter of Sekhwan before leaving for Chandigarh.

Though senior Congress leaders, including AICC general secretary Mosina Kidwai, Capt Amarinder Singh, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and Mohinder Singh Kaypee, addressed a few rallies in support of Bajwa, Badal camped here for about 10 days to mobilise maximum support for Sekhwan.

Though the campaigning came to an end this evening, the atmosphere in the predominantly rural and backward constituency was such as normal electorate were apprehensive of a large-scale violence on the polling day despite the fact that five companies of paramilitary forces have been holding flag marches in the area to instill confidence into them.

The hectic campaigning by Badal, his ministerial colleagues and other party leaders, including MLAs of the SAD and the BJP, and a galaxy of Congress leaders could not generate a clearcut wave either in favour of Sekhwan or Bajwa. There are five candidates in the fray.

During the campaigning, most of the leaders from the SAD-BJP alliance and the Congress indulged in allegations and counter-allegations and failed to address the problems faced by the people and the area which has been devoid of better educational, health and transport facilities, apart from any kind of industrial unit.

Meanwhile, Returning Officer J.P. Singh said to prevent any untoward incident, the police authorities had made elaborate security arrangements.

Special security arrangements had been made for 27 highly sensitive polling booths and 26 sensitive booths as senior police officials had been deployed on security duty, he added.

Capt Amarinder Singh, who was here for addressing an election rally in support of Congress candidate Fateh Jung Singh Bajwa, declared that if the Congress candidates won all the three assembly seats where byelections were being held on August 3, the SAD-BJP government would be ousted from power within a month.

“You are to decide your future along with the future of Punjab which has been looted by the Badals over the past two and half years like anything. The Badals only bothered about their prosperity and amassed ill-gotten money to set up new hotels and purchase landed properties in foreign countries,” he alleged.
