MC’s Claims Exposed
Heavy rain leaves city waterlogged

Jalandhar, July 23
The first heavy spell of monsoon showers this morning exposed the claims of the Municipal Corporation about its preparedness ahead of the season. Though the four hour of heavy downpour that began around 7:15 am brought down the temperature, it created havoc for the residents who had to wade through the deluged roads to reach their offices and destinations.

The entrances of all prominent public places of the city, including the bus stand, district administrative complex, Police Lines and regional passport office, were inundated with rainwater. The pedestrians had to pass through knee-deep waters to reach these places.

Roads of all major colonies, including Model Town, Defence Colony, Ranjit Nagar, Rama Mandi and Basti Gujan, were also filled with rainwater. All prominent city roads, including GT Road, Nakodar Road, Kapurthala Road, Garha Road and Ladowali Road, were inundated with motorists finding it difficult to pass through and getting splashed with water of other passing vehicles.

Children going back from schools had a harrowing experience as they vehicles remained caught in jams due to slow movement of traffic on waterlogged roads. An auto-rickshaw driver passing in front of the DC office got injured and met with an accident as his frontal tyre got stuck up in one of the craters developed around the manhole.

Low lying areas, including Basti Danishmandan, 120-feet road, Domoria underpass and Phagwara Gate, were the worse hit. The flooded roads left the people cursing the officials for their laxity and insensitivity towards the problem over the years.

“This city is the hometown of local bodies minister Manoranjan Kalia. He has done no good to us in the past nearly three years. If he cannot do enough, he should at least get the city’s drainage system in place,” remarked an elderly man. Ironically, the previous local bodies minister Ch Jagjit Singh also hailed from the same city.

Mayor Rakesh Rathore responded to the problem saying, “If Mumbai city has not come out of the problem over the years, how one can expect a better system here? If the downpour is heavy, some inconvenience is normal.”

He further said we had ensured better cleaning of the drains this year. “The starting of sewage treatment plant at Pholariwal is also expected to produce better results. A Rs 350-crore project that has just started for complete coverage of sewage and drainage system may also help tide over the problem in near future. As of the now, the project has started at just three points near Pholariwal,” he said.

Jalandhar, July 23
For class X dropout Daljeet Kaur (23), learning stitching always remained a dream. Her repeated enquiries at many local stitching centres were also futile as she was not able to pay the fees. Those were hard days. But today she is an independent girl. And an earning hand as well. Thanks to the free-of-cost training under the Gandhian Study Centre at Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (KMV).

A chance meeting with the students of KMV at an NSS camp at Nurpur village, near here, brought good luck for her. And she fulfilled her dream. “The college girls had put up an NSS camp in December last year. It was at the camp that I got to know about this scheme from our village sarpanch. I joined the training in February and started working from home,” she said.

The training was not confined to stitching alone. Daljeet, along with other 39 girls from the same village, learnt candle making, pot designing, computer basics and cosmetology. A majority of the girls maintained that they got a opportunity to enjoy college life too.

Gurjeet Kaur, another rural girl who recently started working as a beautician, said attending college was a distant dream for her. “I would often feel thrilled at the mere sight of girls going to college. As a student I always wanted to join a college but poverty restricted me. But God fulfilled my wish,” she said.

The Gandhian Study Centre, as the name suggests, is a centre based on the ideologies of Mahatma Gandhi. A UGC-sponsored scheme, the centre is the brainchild of college Principal Atima Sharma, who started these courses. The centre was officially inaugurated by Delhi Chief Miniser Sheila Dixit on February 18 this year. The course began on February 3 and concluded on May 20.

Talking to The Tribune, Sharma said, “The Gandhian Study Centre is an epoch making centre started with an aim to provide guidance to girls from financially weaker sections. The college received a grant of about Rs 8 lakh for this centre,” she added.

What made this centre a hit with the girls was that there were no transportation blues. A college bus was run to ferry the girls from their village daily. Neelu, a 20-year-old married woman who was part of the training, said, “My family would have never allowed me to come to a far-off college like this.”

“In the coming days, we would like to start some new courses at the centre. And we would like to help these girls with some good employment opportunities. All we want is to make these girls independent in life,” added Sharma.

Lady laughter sends T-town rolling

Jalandhar, July 23
She’s the rolly-polly laugh riot, the delightful debutant, the natural humorist. Sceptics in Mumbai had dismissed her even before she could make her first appearance on screen. But this balliye set the screen on fire and had everyone battling unmanageable hassi fits with her antics in the show “Hass Balliye” aired on Star One every Saturday.

We’ve loved and laughed at the likes of Lalli, Sugandha and Rajbir, but the latest contender to the slot of the ultimate stand-up Comedy Queen among Punjab’s young brigade of lady jokesters, Ginni, aka Bhavneet Chatrath, has silenced the critics and created a sensation in T-town, giving veterans a run for their money.

Born and brought up in Jalandhar, Ginni has loved the stage since she was a baby, no wonder she emerged victorious in her first tryst with the stage, winning the best prize in a baby show that she contested at the age of two.

By the time she reached college, things started getting a bit serious as she took on roles for plays, skits and histrionics at the youth festivals, which dealt with serious themes.

Pursuing her graduation in commerce at HMV followed by a diploma in business management, she played myriad roles in plays, histrionics and skits like “Hi Fi Marriage Bureau” (a satire on NRI marriages), “Very Enjoy Police Thana” (based on female foeticide) and “Aaj Kal Ka Mahabharat” (a take on daily soaps).

An offer to become part of a doubles stand-up act by Kapil Sharma, who had directed her in several projects at the college, was laughed off by her.

College plays were fine but this was different, bigger stuff. Besides, her father would never agree. But she was left open-mouthed when she received a call and was asked to be at Mumbai within a day. “It was crazy. I didn’t even know whether my father would say yes or no. I couldn’t even muster courage to tell him everything, but my prayers got answered at last.”

Visiting Mumbai for the first time, her first day on the sets had many surprises in store for her as well. “Everyone there was already into the groove and practising for the final thing and we didn’t even have a script as yet.”

When Kapil and she finally started rehearsing, she realised she was struggling with her Hindi.

“It was a difficult thing to master the act in just one day. The night before the performance was actually the time when I memorised my lines.”

Those who had smirked at her had to mince their words as the couple (entering the show as the wild card), earned the “Kurkure” (given to performers who do well on the show), the highest marks a standing ovation and loads of praise from both the judges, Karishma Kapoor and David Dhawan.

Competing with veterans like Jaspal Bhatti-Savita, Ghuggi-Kuljit, Juhi-Sachin, Tanaaz-Bakhtiar, Delnaaz-Rajiv and others, she is already one of the most loved among the female contestants on the show.

Why do you think you were short listed for the show out of the many choices which Kapil might have had?

As a teacher Kapil always used to tell me that I was a versatile actor. The rest is history.

Best compliment?

I earned praise from judges, the show director and co-contestants, but the real reward was seeing audience pray when we were about to perform.

What next?

Nothing concrete as yet but things do seem positive, you might see more of me.

Although she’s just a one-show-baby right now, rumour has it that she’s being flooded with offers and would figure solo in the next laugh sequence, but she prefers to remain tight-lipped about it for the moment.

Fee Hike schools, it’s turn of Apeejay College
Kusum Arora
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, July 23
It seems that the implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations has become more of a problem for the common man as the educational institutions have increased their fees.

Earlier it was schools and now the colleges have joined the bandwagon.

The Apeejay College of Fine Arts has made a steep hike in the fees of various courses. The decision has drawn flak from the parents and the students.

Right from the professional degree course of Bachelor in Fine Arts, Bachelor in Performing Arts to Bachelor in Design, M.Sc (IT), M.Sc (Computer Science) and BBA there has been a steep hike in fee structure.

The fee of Bachelor in Design has been increased to Rs 60,000 per semester in the current academic session from Rs 48,000.

On the other hand the fee of Bachelor of Fine Arts has also been increased to Rs 48,125 per semester from Rs 38,500 last year. Similarly the fee of M.Sc (IT) and M.Sc (Computer Science) has also witnessed an increase of Rs 12,125.

“Last year the fee for this course was Rs 48,500 whereas now it is Rs 60,625. This has made things difficult for us. How can we bear the hefty expenses of education in these circumstances,” said a parent requesting anonymity. Talking to The Tribune over the phone, Registrar of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Dr. Raghbir Singh, said, “As such there is no regulatory authority in the university, which can check the fee hike but I will surely check the issue with the college authorities,” he said adding that there is a need of uniformity in fee structure.

It needs mention here that there has been no hike in the university charges, which is directly under the control of the varsity.

The registration fee, enrolment fee and continuation fee continues to be the same i.e. Rs 150 each.

However, the college authorities pacified the students reportedly by compensating them with free stationary items like painting sheets, brushes, video cameras for photography and free-of-cost college trips as well.

When contacted, college principal Dr Sucharita Sharma said, “We have a uniform fee structure for all the courses. The fee hike is the sole decision of the college management. And moreover the issue has been sorted out between the college management and the students,” she added.

“We met the principal today afternoon and sorted out the issue. It was decided that the college management would not increase the fee in the next academic session. We were also assured that the college management would provide scholarships to the needy students,” said a student.

Police increases nakas to check snatching
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, July 23
The police has started setting nakas and increased patrolling to stem a spate of snatchings and thefts in the city and its vicinity. A round of the city in the evening revealed that nakas had been set up all over the city and the cops were checking the papers of the vehicles, especially that of youngsters.

Motorcyclists came in for special attention and many of them without papers could be seen pleading with the police personnel to let them go. The number of PCR patrols too was more visible in the city and some of them were seen stopping those behaving suspiciously on the inner roads of the localities.

Many personnel manning such nakas said while the general public submitted to such checks sportingly, it was the VIPs and spoilt brats who flaunted their connections and tried to disrupt their duty.

In one such incident in Urban Estate, a vehicle was stopped since the young driver was driving at break neck speed and talking on a mobile. When stopped by a PCR team, the occupants refused to come out of the car and insisted on calling some higher ups.

These are not isolated incidents and the city’s high and might have been known to browbeat policemen in getting away scot-free. The most blatant violations pertain to driving with red beacons, black filming, use of hooters, musical horns and additions and alterations in the vehicles in violation of norms.

Fourteen-year-old Harman Singh Virk spends three to four hours a day teeing off in the Army golf grounds in Jalandhar cantonment. Clearly, it is after a lot of practice and hard work that the budding player now ranks sixth at the national level in the junior category.

A class IX student of MGN Public School, Harman is taking training from ace coach Jassi Grewal of Chandigarh. Each year, he is taking his kit and touring across the length and breadth of the country competing in at least seven tournaments to complete a circuit of the Indian Golf Union (IGU).

He recently played at Coimbatore, Kolkata, Bangalore, Jaipur and Chandigarh.

On July 28, he is moving to England to undertake coaching at the Professional Golf Association there. This will be his second trip in the year for he had been there in March earlier after appearing for his examination.

Harman cannot ask for more privileges for he is already getting more than what he aspires for. He has his personal putting green course at Wonderland, a water park on Nakodar Road that his father, Kulwant Singh Virk, owns. The course has come up at a cost of Rs 7 lakh and another Rs 3 lakh has been spent on purchase of a grass mowing John Deere machine, which is used prior to every match to ensure a fast movement of the ball.

To be a member of 14 golf clubs for three to four years, his resourceful NRI dad has shelled out Rs 1.5 lakh. Quite an expensive game, he is spending Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000 on each match just to buy a set of quality dozen golf balls.

Harman is so much passionate about the game that even at the time when he relaxes at home, he likes to switch on the TV to tune onto ESPN and Ten Sports to watch a golf match.

Jalandhar, July 23
The dispute between a section of the staff of DAVIET and their Director-cum-Principal C.L. Kochher over action against a chemistry lecturer does not seem to die down.

The DAVIET Employees Welfare Association, led by general secretary Deepak Parmar, continued its protest, saying that the lecturer Rakesh Verma should have been allowed to withdraw his resignation within the notice period.

Kochher, on the other hand, today issued letters to the protesting staff telling them that the lecturer had approached the court on the management’s decision and that they should not take law in their hands as the matter was now sub-judice. He urged them not to defame the management for personal interests of a few.

The association members replied back, saying that the lecturer was the sole bread-earner of the family and any action against him could lead to a financial crunch in the family. They said they had not disturbed the college atmosphere as they had been lodging protests only during lunch hour.
